FrankenSalmon – Coming Soon To A Table Near You

FrankenSalmon -

Coming Soon To

A Table Near You

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) In September of 2010 the FDA approved the first genetically animal safe for eating. The “product” is a genetically modified Atlantic salmon developed by AquaBounty Technologies  named AquaAdvantage Salmon (AAS).

Improved” salmon

AAS can incredibly grow twice as fast, which is an economic boom. More $$ are to be made, which blinds consciousness not to look at the likely negative impacts.

How this was accomplished

This growth rate was gained by modifying the salmon’s genome, the addition of a growth hormone gene, and an antifreeze gene. AquaBounty claims its salmon is an environmentally sustainable alternative . With AAS, the unnatural modification occurs in that two proteins are being introduced into the salmon’s genetic makeup are from other fish.

frankensalmon

Supposed benefits of huge and hugely profitable frankensalmon

Presumed benefits include:

  • Enviro impact – AAS will be raised in land-based facilities to reduce the environmental impact on coastal areas
  • Diseases – May eliminate the threat of disease transfers.
  • Transport – Will allow the harvesters to live near these landbased food facilities, reducing some of the costs of fish transport and the use of fossil fuels, again helping the environment.

Ploy to sell harmful frankensalmon

The above ignores the following:

  • Health impacts – First there is the  issue of safety in eating  genetically modified salmon is “are they safe to eat?”  There is amply evidence that other genetically modified foods have ill health effects – including causing allergic reactions, digestive disturbances, infertility, and an overall weakening of the immune system. There have been no long term studies, as usual.
  • Environmental impacts – Then there is the issue of an ultimate environmental impact, especially if the AAS salmon are accidently introduced into the wild.  While AAS are designed for land facilities, precautions can never be fool-proof. This is why he Fish and Wildlife Service opposes frankenfish.

AAS salmon are all triploid females, which means that they are not only all female, but sterilized.  Sometimes this sterilization doesn’t work. There is a failure of sterilization in .1 to 1% of fish, which is a pretty small number, except fish farms usually contain  up to a 1 million fish – and many of these farms are to be established.

frankensalmon

Given the size of Frankensalmon

How this could impact wild fish populations is unknown. But given their size, they may be more attractive for mating then a natural Atlantic salmon, which could negatively impact wild salmon populations.

Ultimately these farms should be outlawed. But is established, knowing the industry’s history and arrogance, it is unlikely there will be adequate  monitoring to make sure these salmon mutants none escape to the wild. Also the US government has had a nonchalant attitude toward such environmental threats, as evidence by the growing of GMO crops in wildlife preserves. This is especially important in areas where a salmon population is now already present. As the video below shows, there is a real potential for destroying the natural salmon population.

GMO baby food making children sick

GMO baby food

making

children sick

Julian Georgiou, Healingtalks Contributing Writer

(Healingtalks) Mass-commercalized GMO baby foods are a reminder that consumers need to be most diligently aware when shopping. The one company most behind this thrust has already been pouring vastly misleading information out to the public – even with false claims to have an organic status with great health benefits! These products will actually produce sick babies and sick children – and ultimately sick adults to feed the future patient rosters of Big Pharma.

Who is polluting our baby foods?

The company behind this most deceptive and malevolent practice is Martek. They produce Martek’s Life’sDHA and Life’sARA. They even have the nerve to claim these are organic ingredients and the fact is that their lab-creations can now be found in hundreds of commercial products, including baby foods. See the list of products below.

Consumers, especially mothers, thus need to become super-aware of what is out there. Pass it on.

Genetically modified DHA

So let’s start with DHA. It’s an omega-3 fatty acid  normally and naturally found in breast milk. It is a major component of the brain and eyes of every human being, representing about 97% of all omega-3 fats found in the brain and 93% of all omega-3 fats located in the retina (Life’s DHA).

However, and like all genetically altered foods with GMOs, the Martek products are really incompatible with our nature and ourl bodies. They are especially harmful when consumed by babies.

Another example of the GMO industry’s history of vast deceptions

As far back as 2002, food manufacturers began supplementing infant formula and baby food with synthetic forms of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA). They claimed this helped with brain development despite the fact that their forms of DHA/ARA, as used in infant formulas, are really incompatible and substantially different than the form found in human milk.

Synthetic DHA/ARA is from laboratory-grown fermented algae and fungus. It is produced through the use of hexane, a petroleum by-product and EPA-identified neurotoxin.

Martek still  deceptively claims organic status for its products. While the FDA has announced it will investigate such claims about DHA/ARA infant formulas, and that they do not really support brain and eye development, that most corrupt of US agencies, has failed to act.

Negative health effects of GMO altered DHA/ARA

From 2002 onwards, parents and medical professionals have observe a range health problems after ingesting these products. They include difficulties in breathing as well as gastrointestinal disorders. When affected babies are no longer fed the formula, the ailments disappear.

Additional alternative options

You can also protect your baby by

  • Make your own baby food from fresh, organic and whole ingredients as pictured above
  • Alternatively buy only organic baby food , making doubly sure that (even if labelled organic) they do not contain any DHA or ARA  ingredients that are added artificially.
  • Long-term breastfeeding – this is the best initial option, and to insure your baby gets the best nutrients that nature intended (Lance, 2011).

Genetically engineered US baby products to avoid or boycott

  • Earth’s Best Organic Soy with DHA & ARA (Hain Celestial Group)
  • Enfamil LIPIL (Mead Johnson Nutritionals)
  • Enfamil Next Step (Mead Johnson)
  • Isomil 2 Advance (Abbott Laboratories)
  • Nestle Good Start Supreme with DHA & ARA (Nestle USA)
  • Parent’s Choice Organic (Wal-Mart)
  • Similac Advance (Abbott Nutrition)
  • Ultra Bright Beginnings Lipids (PBM Products, LLC)

Future testing for GMO ingredients in baby food (beginning in Europe where GMO labels are required)

In Europe there is a Eureka Project that’s developing screening methods for testing the presence of GMO ingredients in baby foods. Initially their testing kit will look for two common ingredients in baby foods, glycine max proteins and maize starch.

Consumer action is needed in US

It is important, in the US, to ask the American National Organic Standards Board to revoke the use of their DHA and AHA ingredients in organically-labeled products (Keegan, 2011) . We should also boycott the products that have their ingredients.

Kucinich: protect our food supply from GM crises

Kucinich:

protect our food

supply from GM crises

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today announced legislation that would prohibit open-air cultivation of Genetically Engineered - GE pharmaceutical and industrial crops so as to prevent biological contamination of our food supply. The bill would also establish a tracking system to regulate and ensure the safety of the same GE pharmaceutical and industrial crops.

Wise words from Kucinich

“We must take steps to prevent genetically engineered organisms from being grown in a way that could do irreversible damage to our food supply. Under pressure from profit-minded industry, we have already allowed the spread of genetically modified crops into our agriculture at great cost to our economy and with unknown effects on our bodies,” said Kucinich.

History of open field testing

The Department of Agriculture has allowed more than 300 outdoor field trials of plants—including feed crops including corn, soybeans, rice, safflower, barley, alfalfa, mustard greens, peas, sugarcane, tomatoes, and wheat—which are genetically engineered to produce experimental pharmaceuticals, industrial enzymes and novel proteins. Those GE substances are not intended to be incorporated into food or to be spread into the environment or our food supply. Yet there are examples of such contamination, with enormously destructive consequences.

“Many Americans are unaware that crops that are genetically engineered to produce experimental pharmaceutical drugs are being grown in this country in the open, allowing them to contaminate conventional crops without detection. We cannot rely on industry to prevent the unintended spread of genetically engineered organisms,” said Kucinich.

genetically modified food bills

Kucinich’s  Genetically Engineered Safety Act and GE Right to Know Act

H.R. 3554, The Genetically Engineered Safety Act, which would prohibit the open-air cultivation of genetically engineered (GE) pharmaceutical and industrial crops. The bill would prohibit

  • Use of common human food or animal feed as the host plant for a genetically engineered pharmaceutical or industrial chemical.
  • Would establish a tracking system to regulate the growing, handling, transportation, and disposal of pharmaceutical and industrial crops to protect native ecosystems and traditional farms from the unstudied dangers of growing GE organisms.
  • Note that the legislation is part of a package of bills introduced by Kucinich, which includes H.R. 3553, the GE Right to Know Act.

“We have taken few steps to ensure that our own genetic experiments are kept in check. This commonsense legislation would simply ensure that our experimentation with genetic engineering and cloning do not disrupt our traditional food supply. When you are talking about the safety and stability of the food supply, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” said Kucinich.

Shocking revelation:

chocolate to become the next

mass-marketed GM food

Julian Georgiou, Healingtalks Contributing Writer

(Healingtalks) Consumer beware indeed.

There is a brand new thrust toward adulterating what goes into our mouths. It is yet another dangerous modification of our food supply, and it involve a universal favorite, chocolate! Could there be anything more evil and disturbing than to mess with this great “ambrosia” or food of the gods?

Shocking as it sounds, this is exactly what’s on the horizon. Plans are under way to genetically modify 70% or more of our global cocoa supply. The campaign involves using hybrid, gene-modified cocoa trees and in collaboration the “Gang of Eight”

  • MARS (makers of MARS bars)
  • USDA’s ARS or Agricultural Research Service
  •  IBM
  • NCGR (National Center for Genome Resources)
  • Clemson University

  • Washington State University (CGD).

cocoa where it is grown

Where cocoa is grown

Modern role and prior history of  harvesting cocoa

Before going into the details of this terrible plan, lets look at the modern role and prior history of harvesting cocoa.

Cocoa actually ranks among the top ten agriculture commodities in the world. The cocoa industry thereby creates a livelihood for more than  6.5 million farmers in west and central Africa, Mexico, South America and  parts of Asia.  The first use of cocoa appears to have occurred around 1100 BC (Wiki). In the Americas, this crop has been cultivated for at least three millenniums, especially in Mexico, Central and South America.

So the question arises, if  humans have been  growing cocoa plants so successfully for so long, why should we ever tinker with this track record? Why fix what’s not broken?

Alluring false promises of GMO research

Researchers claim we can ‘accelerate’ the breeding process of cocoa trees..and that that will benefit the chocolate industry and cocoa growers in West Africa — the home of 70% of the world’s production (CGD).  The farmers don’t seem to have any voice in the above. Although CGD boasts better profits for altered plants, then if so at what expense and for lining whose pockets?

dangers of GMOs

Dangers of genetically modified foods

Why worry about genetically modified foods?

In brief, genetic engineering involves a mechanical way of looking at nature that goes against the principles of life. Is not surprising thus that animal-feeding studies have shown that with GMO-altered feed, animal’s immune systems, general health, and the ability to procreate does downhill.

Many HealingTalks articles listed below go into this in much more detail.

What is in chocolate (Nutrients)

Cocoa is a nutrient-rich product that can bring on feelings of great well-being and happiness.

It does this because cocoa contains phenylethylamine, a slight antidepressant and stimulant. Cocoa can also increase the level of serotonine, likewise contributing to a feeling of well-being and happiness as resonating in your brain. This wonder product also contains some essential minerals including:

  • magnesium,
  • calcium
  • iron
  •  zinc
  •  copper
  •  potassium and manganese
  •  vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C, E and pantothenic acid.

Cocoa  keeps your high blood pressure down. It reduces the blood’s ability to clot (CocoaWeb).

And the best way to insure getting all these ingredients is by purchasing organic dark chocolate.

Raw chocolate recipe

Say no to GMOs by going organic. Make this delicious, organic, nutrient-rich desert by yourself and share it with friends and family:

Ingredients:

1 Cup of Raw Organic Raw Cocoa powder

½ Cup of Raw Cocoa Butter or Coconut Butter

1 Teaspoon of Stevia powder

1 Cup of soaked Almonds (Chopped)

Directions:

Use double boil method to melt the butter. Cook gently to about 110 F.

Add Stevia and mix well (Turn off water heat)

Add Cocoa

Poor onto a plate (Which has plastic wrapper)

Finally add nuts proportionately

Call to action

Given this thrust, we need to protect ourselves and our food supplies.

Labeling foods that contain GMOs in not mandatory in America.

However the California GMO labelling initiative that requires labeling can be a true Death Blow to GMOs. Also the Cacao Genome Database  (CGD) welcomes your feedback about their cocoa modification project. Tell them you don’t want it and won’t buy such products. Comments can be posted here.

Your Thanksgiving dinner - genetically engineering or not

Your Thanksgiving dinner -

Genetically engineered or not?

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) Did you know that most turkeys raised in the US are fed a diet of genetically engineered corn and soybean meal in a factory farm?

Why it matters whether your Thanksgiving turkey is bioengineered

When Monsanto’s engineered genes were discovered in the blood of pregnant women and their babies, scientists concluded it must have gotten there through eating GMO-fed animals. And that’s not all. The drugs and chemicals found in the typical non-organic turkey form an almost endless list (1).

What about tofu turkey for Thanksgiving?

Most soy is genetically engineered. Read the label to be sure it is organic. Remember also that the healthiest soy products are both organic and fermented, such as soy tempeh. Also beware that with non-organic products the soy is often “hexane-extracted” It is bathed in a serious neurotoxin that is banned in organic products.

Thanksgiving dairy

Love mash potatoes with butter, veggies with au gratin or desserts with desserts with whipped cream and ice cream?

Dairy products may be produced from the milk of cows shot up with GE growth hormones (a.k.a. rBGH or rBST) in factory farms!

Thanksgiving stuffing

Genetically engineered corn is highly toxic, according to Monsanto’s own data and as independently analyzed by scientists. Thus cornbread stuffing is usually bioengineered. High-fructose corn syrup and trans fats also can come from the same GE corn oil. Lastly, Monsanto’s genetically modified sweet corn is now on produce shelves. And GMO corn is already contaminating over 20,000 varieties of corn in Mexico and Central America.

Take action

Sign the Millions Against Monsanto petition to label GMOs and food from factory farms.

Sources for Organics

  • Local Harvest has local, organic, pasture-raised and heritage breed turkeys.
  • Raw milk from cows raised on organic pasture is the healthiest
  • Organic seed growers preserving native and heirloom corn varieties.

Death Blow to GMOs

Death blow

to GMOs

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) The most significant breaking news on the GMOs  is the California people’s initiative to gather enough signatures to put this to a historical ballot which would require the labeling of GMOs in foods. Corrupt politicians representing the interests of corporations, not the people, have refused to enact such an initiative even though 90% of Californians support such an effort.

Pathway to Victory

This is the pathway to victory against GMOs, to deal a death blow to GMOs and restore sanity and integrity to our seeds and food crops.

Breaking News:California GMO labeling initiative is filed

California GMO labelling initiative is filed

Breaking News:

California GMO labeling

initiative is filed

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) This week the grassroots Committee For the Right to Know, a wide-ranging coalition of consumer, public health and environmental organizations, food companies, and individuals submitted the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act to the State Attorney General for title and summary, prior to circulation as an initiative measure for the November 2012 election. This is part of a nationwide campaign to also raise consumer awareness and thereby reach a triggering a “tipping point” or sufficient rejection (approximately 5% of consumers) to have GMOs largely removed from the marketplace.

What the Right to Know GEFA Requires

The initiative would require genetically engineered foods (also known as genetically modified organisms, or GMOs) and foods containing GMO ingredients to be clearly labeled, similar to current labels with other nutritional information.

Genetically engineered food is usually plant or meat product that has had its DNA artificially altered in a lab with genes from other plants, animals, viruses or bacteria, in order to produce foreign compounds in that food. This genetic alteration is experimental, and is not found in nature.

Risks of GE Foods

The risk of genetically engineered foods is unclear, and unlike the strict safety evaluations required for the approval of new drugs, the safety of genetically engineered foods for human consumption has not been adequately tested, the group said. Recent studies show that genetically engineering food can create new, unintended toxic substances and increase allergies, cancer risks and other health problems, especially for children.

Experts Agree Labeling Is Necessary

Experts agree that by labeling genetically engineered food, we can help identify foods that cause health problems, the committee said.

“Because the FDA has failed to require labeling of GMO food, this initiative closes a critical loophole in food labeling law. It will allow Californians to choose what they buy and eat and will allow health professionals to track any potential adverse health impacts of these foods,” says Andy Kimbrell, Director of the Center for Food Safety.

Most Common GMO Traits

The two most common genetically engineered traits are the expression of an insecticide in the tissue of “Bt Corn” and the expression of a compound in “Roundup Ready Soy” which enables high doses of Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer to be sprayed while the plant survives.

As much as 85 percent of corn in the U.S. is genetically engineered. BT Corn is currntly regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency as an insecticide.

 Worldwide GMO Labeling Movement

Robyn O’Brien, author and founder of the Allergy Kids Foundation says, “I support labeling genetically engineered foods because allergy-sensitive people can exercise caution with essential information to make informed decisions about what they eat.” Fifty countries including the European Union and Japan have laws mandating that genetically engineered foods be labeled, but the United States does not have such a requirement.

Public opinion polls indicate that over 90 percent of California voters support the labeling of genetically engineered foods. Efforts to enact labeling laws in Congress and the California legislature have been blocked by big food and chemical company lobbyists. This measure will take the issue directly to the people to decide whether genetically engineered foods should be labeled.

“These genetically engineered foods have been allowed into our food supply without warning, and they aren’t labeled,” said Pamm Larry, founder of the grassroots movement and the Committee For the Right to Know. “The bottom line is Californians have a right to know what’s in the food we eat and feed our children. It’s time to send a strong, direct message to those who govern us, whether they be agency or elected, that we want genetically engineered foods labeled.”

The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act was carefully and specifically written to avoid any unnecessary burden or cost to consumers or producers. California voters are expected to have the chance to vote on the initiative in November 2012.

 Summary

  • RBGH = the largest selling dairy drug in America
Banned in Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and in the 27 countries of the European Union because of its dangerous to your health
  • IGF-1 in rBGH  increases breast cancer risk
  • rBGH is dangerous
It causes at least 16 different adverse health conditions in cows, including mastitis that contaminates milk with pus.
  • The truth about rBGH is suppressed
Those who have attempted to expose the truth about RBGH have been threatened with “dire consequences” by Monsanto’s lawyers
  • Avoid rBGH by drinking raw organic milk
and from a small dairy farmer you know and trust or is certified organic.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women,  about one in eight. It can be avoided through lifestyle changes, and the one food to most avoid is non-organic dairy products like cheese, ice cream, yogurt, butter and plain milk.

What is rBGH?

Cows are injected with rBGH or recombinant bovine growth hormone is used to increase milk production artificially to make more money.  It is an unnatural or synthetic version of bovine somatotropin (BST), a hormone produced in cows’ pituitary glands.

Monsanto developed the recombinant version from genetically engineered E. coli bacteria and markets it under the brand name “Posilac.” RBGH is the largest selling dairy animal drug in America. But it is banned in over 30 countries because of its dangers,

The Truth Is Suppressed

In 1997, two Fox-affiliate investigative journalists, Jane Akre and Steve Wilson, attempted to air a program exposing the truth about the dangers of rBGH. Lawyers for Monsanto sent letters promising “dire consequences” if the story aired. After attempts by Fox to bribe the reporters to keep quiet failed, the station agreed to air a revised version of the report. An unheard of 83 edits later, the report was shelved and the courts took over. Although a lower court ruled in favor of the reporters for some $425,000, a Florida appeals court denied them whistleblower protection, claiming Fox (and the media in general) have no obligation to tell the truth and have the freedom to report, essentially, fact OR fiction as real news. They tell their story in an article at PR Watch.

Corrupt FDA Ignores Fails to Protect the Public

Despite decades of evidence about rBGH dangers, the FDA – probably the most corrupt government agency on the  planet, still maintains it’s safe for human consumption. It ignores scientific evidence. According to Dr. Samuel Epstein, a well-respected professional in cancer prevention and toxicology and chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, the FDA has not responded to evidence that rBGH is unsafe with anything that is meaningful. Money rules over scientific truth.

In 1999, the United Nations Safety Agency ruled unanimously not to endorse or set safety standards for rBGH milk, which has effectively resulted in an international ban on U.S. milk.

Differences Between rBGH-Treated and Untreated Milk

  • Increased levels of insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1)
  • Contamination with illegal antibiotics and drugs used to treat mastitis and other rBGH-induced diseases
  • Increased levels of the thyroid hormone enzyme thyroxin-5′-monodeiodinase
  • Reduced casein (a milk protein)
  • Increased concentration of long-chain fatty acids and decreased concentration of short-chain fatty acidsALL of the factors above can cause or contribute to health problems for people. But people aren’t the only ones suffering—as it turns out, the cows getting injected with these hormones are suffering as well.

RBGH Causes 16 Different Medical Problems in Cows

Cows receiving this synthetic hormone suffer massively high rates of mastitis or painful infection of their udders. Monsanto’s own data show up to an 80 percent incidence of mastitis in hormone-treated cattle, resulting in the administration of antibiotics and other drugs. The Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research (2003) also found 16 different harmful medical conditions resulting from rBGH administration to dairy cattle, including:

  • 40 percent increase in infertility
  • 55 percent increased risk for lameness
  • Shortened lifespan
  • Hoof disorders
  • Visibly abnormal milk

RBGH Raises Levels of IGF-1 in Milk by Up to 70 Percent IGF-1 is a potent hormone that acts to accelerate cell growth and replication – and in a cancer like way. Not surprisingly elevated IGF-1 levels are associated with breast and other cancers. When cows are injected with rBGH, their levels of IGF-1 increase up to 20-fold, and this IGF-1 is excreted in the milk.

In one study, a six-fold increase in IGF-1 levels in milk were found as early as seven days following rBGH treatment. Not only are IGF-1 levels elevated  but a significant portion of this is in a free form that may be 10 times as potent as the IGF-1 in untreated milk. Pasteurization does NOT destroy this protein but can actually increases IGF-1 levels by about 70 percent, presumably by disrupting protein binding.Science also tells us that  these things also do  NOT break inside of us when you swallow them but are absorved into our bloodstream, as evidenced by both human and animal studies. Infants and children absorb even more.

How Elevated IGF-1 Levels Raises Your Breast Cancer Risk

Only one of every 10 breast cancer cases is attributed to genetics—the other nine are triggered by environmental and dietary factors. Increased IGF-1 levels have been linked to mot only breast but colon, and prostate cancers as has been documented in about 50 scientific publications over the past three decades. Among them is the 1998 Harvard Nurses Health study, which showed that premenopausal women with elevated IGF-1 levels had up to a seven-fold increase in breast cancer. And women younger than age 35 who have elevated IGF-1 have more aggressive breast cancer.

How does IGF-1 contribute to breast cancer?

IGF-1 regulates cell growth, cell division, and the ability of cancer cells to spread to your distant organs (invasiveness).

According to Dr. Epstein, IGF-1 blocks your natural defense mechanisms against early microscopic cancers. A study authored by Dr. Epstein demonstrated that IGF-1 in rBGH milk is a potential risk factor for both breast and gastrointestinal cancers. And a study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention concluded that diet can impact cancer risk by influencing IGF-1 level.

Again the risks don’t end with breast cancer. Ten studies show your risk for colon cancer, and seven studies document the risk for  prostate cancer. If you want more information on this topic, read Dr. Epstein’s 2006 book, What’s In Your Milk?

Are You Drinking rBGH Milk?

You very well may be drinking rBGH milk, or eating rBGH cheese or yogurt, as no labeling is required. This is despite the fact that surveys show that more than 80 percent of Americans want it labeled, but the government is protecting financial interests over your health. The good news is, as increasing numbers of consumers and dairies choose to avoid rBGH, you can find labels that say “rBGH-free” or a similar variation. Organic milk is also rBGH-free. According to the Hartman Group, organic milk is now among the first organic product consumers buy.

Organic milk is enjoying an annual growth rate of about 20 percent, while overall milk consumption has dropped by about 10 percent.

Organic milk is certainly preferable to milk that contains this dangerous hormone. However, drinking any milk that is pasteurized—organic or not – has health consequences. You can avoid the risks of rBGH, as well as pasteurization, by drinking raw milk  The more you can avoid genetically modified (GM) and highly processed foods, the healthier you and your family will be.

GMO-Free Is Fastest Growing Retail Brand

GMO-Free Is

Fastest Growing

Retail Brand

According to a recent survey,   U.S. retailers are expanding their store brands and the fastest-growing brand making a health claim is “GMO-free.”

Nielsen’s Numbers

This labeling, according to Nielsen’s numbers, is up by 67% in 2009 with a sales growth of $60.2 million in that sector. In fact, healthy claims are tops in several categories, including “Gluten free” and bolstering Omega acids.

The consumer tide against genetically modified foods (GM or GMO) is growing. New labels reflect that rend. GMO foods have been linked to infertility, immune system damage and many agricultural hazards. Consumers are waking up to these facts.

New Certification of GMO-Free Products

Thousands of organic and natural food products are also now enrolled in the Non-GMO Project’s Product Verification Program (known as PVP). This is the nation’s first and largest system for testing of product standards against genetic modification. This project finds its verification label on some of the biggest retail names in the food industry.

As sentiment against the GMO seeds and products made from their crops grows, so too will the retail market backlash. Although government agencies like the Food and Drug Administration have refused to rule against GM foods, despite the evidence, the free market and consumer demand is turning the tide against them on its own.

As Shelly Roche of Bytestyle.tv says, “The great thing about this new report is that it shows how quickly the market responds when it sees a shift in consumer demand.” Health-conscious consumers are voting with their forks.

Healthful Foods You Should Never Ever Eat

Healthful Foods

You Should Never,

Ever Eat

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) There are two types of research regarding foods — independent science and corporate science. It’s not hard to decide which one to trust. Jeffrey Smith, featured in the video at the end of this article, is the executive director of the Institute for Responsible Technology. His Campaign for Healthier Eating in America offers to create the tipping point of consumer rejection of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) to rid them from our food supply. In this short but important video, he points out some of the most glaring problems with scientific research, and that is the discrepancies you get depending on the source of the funding.

As Smith points out, Monsanto, one of the chief player in the field of genetically modified (GM) foods, wants you to simply trust them because they’re “experts” and their studies “prove” their GM foods are safe. But these same experts also told you PCB’s, Agent Orange, and DDT was safe, and we now know those claims were far from accurate.

Profit-Motivated Research Cannot Be Trusted

Inappropriate control groups in corporate research often provide

  • The wrong statistical methods
  • Incorrect detection methods

Monsanto Rigged Bovine Growth Tests

In the video, Smith gives some excellent examples of how Monsanto twisted their science to fit their own needs. For example, to “prove” that pasteurization destroys the bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in milk, their scientists pasteurized the milk 120 times longer than normal. Clearly, the results from that experiment were skewed. Simply withholding negative results is another common tactic.

Last year, Dr. Mercola  interviewed Shiv Chopra on this topic. Chopra is a former drug company insider and also worked for what is now Health Canada; the Canadian equivalent of the FDA. While producing a department ordered report on rBGH in 1997, called the Gaps Analysis Report, his team discovered that the trial data he’d requested from Monsanto nine years earlier had in fact been produced, but he had for some reason never been granted access to it, even though he was tasked with approving rBGH for use in Canada.

That research, performed by Monsanto, confirmed his fears, showing rBGH increased insulin-like growth factor in rats, increased thyroid activity, and produced ill effects in the testes.

Monsanto Rigged Soy Safety Tests

Similarly, when Monsanto wanted to prove that their GM soy was substantially equivalent to non-GM soy, they left key data out of their study that showed the GM soy contained more than seven times the normal amount of a known allergen.

Monsanto Rigged Corn Safety Test

And, when they wanted to introduce their genetically modified high lysine corn, Monsanto claimed that it has a history of safe use in the food industry because it’s a naturally occurring protein in soil, and that therefore it will not pose a threat to health. However, an independent scientist decided to double check these facts and what he discovered was rather shocking. Based on the amount of lysine the average American would get from eating this high lysine corn, you’d have to consume 22,000 pounds of soil, every second, 24 hours a day, to get the same amount of lysine in your diet.

Talk about misleading and yet, because of corrupted regulators, they got away with it!

Health Dangers of GM Soy and Corn

Genetically modified soy and corn are two of the most prevalent GM foods in the US food supply, and both have been linked to serious health effects.

1) GMO Produced Reproductive Disorders

A 2009 Brazilian study discovered that female rats fed GM soy for 15 months showed significant changes in their uterus and reproductive cycle, compared to rats fed organic soy or those raised without soy. This finding adds to a mounting body of evidence suggesting that GM foods can contribute to a number of reproductive disorders, including:

  • Changes in reproductive hormones, such as excessive production of estrogen, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone
  • Damage to pituitary gland
  • Retrograde menstruation, in which menstrual discharge travels backwards into the body rather than through the uterus, which can cause a disease known as endometriosis, which may lead to infertility. The disorder can also produce pelvic and leg pain, gastrointestinal problems, chronic fatigue, and a wide variety of other symptoms
  • Testicular changes, including damaged sperm cells

2) Skyrocketing Infant Mortality Rate Upon Eating GM Foods

A disturbing study performed by Irina Ermakova with the Russian National Academy of Sciences, reported that more than half the babies from mother rats fed GM soy died within three weeks, while the death rate in the non-GM soy group was only 10 percent. Additionally, the babies in the GM group were smaller, and, worst of all, could not reproduce. In a telling coincidence, after Ermakova’s feeding trials were completed, her laboratory started feeding all the rats in the facility a commercial rat chow using GM soy. Within two months, the infant mortality facility-wide reached 55 percent…

Unfortunately, you have no way of knowing whether the soy you’re eating is genetically modified or not, because GM foods do not have to be labeled as such in the US. However, when you consider that 94 percent of all soy grown in the United States is genetically modified in one way or another, you can be virtually guaranteed that if a food product contains soy, it’s probably genetically modified, unless it’s labeled “100% USDA Organic.”

The identical problem exists with GM corn, which accounts for about 88 percent of all corn grown in the United States. The safety of GM corn recently came under scrutiny again when a study published earlier this year discovered that Bt toxin, which is present in many GM crops, is now showing up in human blood!

3) GMOs Creating Toxic Blood Contamination

Bt toxin makes crops toxic to pests, but industry has claimed that the toxin poses no danger to the environment or human health because the protein breaks down in the human gut. Alas, the presence of the toxin in human blood is evidence that this is yet another false assertion that doesn’t hold up under closer scrutiny. The GM insecticide toxin is also showing up in fetal blood, which means it could have an impact on future generations, which is exactly what safety advocates like Smith have been warning about.

Your Health Depends on Wise Food Choices

Hopefully, this information will cause you to think a little deeper about the process of the scientific model in general, and how to evaluate scientific evidence in particular. It’s quite clear that in order to get closer to the truth, you need to look at independent studies done by independent scientists that aren’t trying to prove a predetermined point of view, and aren’t financially motivated to uphold any particular corporate claim of safety or efficacy.

Additionally, this information further highlights the need to carefully consider the foods you buy.

There’s no doubt in my mind that if you want to maintain good health, you simply must educate yourself about how the foods you eat are produced. When you compare unadulterated, organic foods to conventional processed foods (many, if not most, of which contain GM ingredients), there’s simply no question that one is real food, and the other is anything but!

Yes, you may spend more money on organic food today, but your payoff of good health should more than make up for it – and reduce your health care costs in the future.

We  recently found a helpful aid, which shows that feeding your family organic food doesn’t have to cost a fortune. The web site, 100 Days of Real food, offers a free ‘real food meal plan’ (for summer), using typical in-season organic foods. The meal plan includes both shopping lists and recipes for three square meals a day for an entire week for a family of four.

The estimated cost? About $167 per week.

Help Others to Avoid GMO Foods

Since the US government prevents the labeling of GM foods, it’s imperative to educate yourself on what they are, and to help spread awareness.

First and foremost, avoid most processed foods, unless it’s labeled USDA 100% Organic. You can also avoid GM foods that are not found in processed foods, if you know what to look for. There are currently eight genetically modified food crops on the market:

Soy Sugar from sugar beets
Corn Hawaiian papaya
Cottonseed (used in vegetable cooking oils) Some varieties of zucchini
Canola (canola oil) Crookneck squash

The free Non-GMO Shopping Guide is a great resource to help you determine which food brands and processed food products are GM-free. Print it out for yourself, and share it with everyone you know. If you feel more ambitious you can order the Non-GMO Shopping Tips brochure in bulk, and bring them to the grocery stores in your area. Talk to the owner or manager and get permission to post them in their store.

Educational Resources

At this point, there’s really no shortage of excellent information on the hazards of genetically modified foods. we highly recommend Jeffrey Smith’s books, Seeds of Deception, and Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods, which provide overwhelming evidence that GM foods are unsafe and should never have been introduced in the first place.
