Coffee, what’s the

verdict? Is it good

or bad for us?

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) For most of us, coffee benefits outweigh risks. Oh that heavenly aroma must be worth something, no? It gets us up and going and certainly increases mental alertness.

Coffee and stimulating the fire within

The caffeine will stimulate the adrenal glands to produce adrenalin. The same glands are referred to as the “fire chakra” in ancient Indian healing view.  It is this inner “fire” that can get our bodies  moving and the minds as well  (to actively project images outward, what is essential in all mental processes). I know from personal experience that when the adrenal gland operations collapse, the left brain (that projects conceptual and symbolic images outward) shuts down. It loses its push. The mind collapses like a muscle gone flabby.
Thus coffee makes us feel both mentally and physically stronger and alive. Isn’t that the greatest. But the question here is one of longevity. Will that feeling last or is there a burnout and letdown?

Analogy of food subjected to fire

Many indigenous, shamanistic cultures routinely boil herbs over a stone fire to intensify the herbal effects. In basic food preparation, just a little bit of heat (as in using a dehydrator up to 105-10 degrees Fahrenheit or a steamer) will intensified flavors to enliven a dish. We see this with dehydrated fruits and veggies. But the more fire we use, such as boiling a dish to death, can render it nutritionally lifeless. Fire heats us in our home but it can also burn down the same house when out of control.

The degree of inner fire

The degree of inner fire becomes relevant. If one is vibrantly healthy, a cup or two of coffee can be a wonderful get-me-going routine. It can significantly improve mental and physical performance. in emergencies, this extra boost can be life-saving. I have used a small amount of caffeine just before road races to enhance performance …but never afterwards.
So too much coffee will, for example, make our nerves shaky and start to radically reduce effective performance.  If one has an  advanced illness or health challenge, coffee in a diet can become questionable (as Dr. Dean Ornish points out in his approach to reversing cardiovascular disease).

What is inner fire?

Simple physical fire is formed by rubbing objected against each other, creating friction. Any “fighting against” or oppositional relationship is one of “not being at One.” Why is this significant? It is in a certain “larger picture” of how things really work, or what can be called a “worldview.”  The conventional worldview tells us that nature (and our nature) is supposedly made up of just matter and energy. Think of of a car made up of just metal parts and that burns energy. For a machine this is true. But what of a living organism? Our uniquely introduced worldview offers a different understanding that in the final analysis everything in our experience of life revolves around what forms “consciousness and unconsciousness in nature” – not matter and energy.  This takes a huge reorientation to understand and see. It requires an exact understanding of what consciousness is. Just a small part of this larger picture tells us that the “movement away from nature’s oneness occurs in oppositional relationships or that which forms fire. Get fired up a little and you are more alert. Get fired up a lot, and you’ve lost it, losing awareness of things around you. Imagine that consciousness is not just simple awareness but also what keeps us whole. Thus too much fire starts the nerves shaking – a sign of losing inner steadiness, connected wholeness. The oppositional consciousness of the fight/flight reaction of adrenalin just belongs to this consciousness-burning gentre. If not contained, it will, in fact, burnout our inner consciousness and life.

Pouring “water” over fire

Inner peace like that experienced when siting by a still seashore, must be returned to, to replenshed one’s calm, balanced connectedness – whether in sleep or via peaceful meditation.

A forever split verdict

With compromised individuals, this does not as easily occur so coffee should then be avoided. With others,  coffee enhances life. A slew of research studies support both sides of this coin. In addition, the very fact that a person tolerates coffee can mean that they are healthier, so that relatively positive results are intrinsically eschewed. Thus if coffee drinkers have a lower risk of stroke is it because of the coffee drinking or their healthier state to being with, and to thus tolerate coffee?
Thus each person has to judge and make a verdict for themselves, as is common with other food sensitivities. If you break out with a rash eating peanuts and your bother or sister doesn’t, you just can’t eat the same. With serious chronic ills and advanced age, however, the borders shift and it becomes increasingly advisable not  to drink coffee or a least for it to be moderated. Still and even there, the borders are no hard. As a result, our verdict has and will forever remain split.

Coffee’s pros

  • 1. Antioxidants. Coffee is rich in antioxidants like chlorogenic acid and melanoidins. Antioxidants help prevent oxidation, a process that causes damage to cells and contributes to aging.
  • 2. Parkinson’s disease. Regular coffee drinking can reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease. A number of studies [1],[2] have demonstrated that people who drink coffee are less likely to have Parkinson’s disease. But once you have the disease, again, its dietary use is questionable.
  • 3. Diabetes. Coffee drinking has a potential to protect one against developing type 2 diabetes. A prospective study[3] as part of the US Nurses Health Study found that moderate consumption of both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee lowered the risk of type 2 diabetes in younger and middle aged women.
  • 4. Liver cirrhosis. Coffee drinking may protect against liver cirrhosis, especially alcoholic cirrhosis.
  • 5. Gallstones. Coffee drinking may be protective against gallstone formation in both men and women [4]
  • 6. Kidney stones. Coffee consumption lowers the risk of kidney stones formation. Coffee increases the urine volume, preventing crystallization of calcium oxalates.
  • 7. Alzheimer’s disease. Regular coffee drinking may help to protect against Alzheimer’s disease. Recent study [5] in mice showed that caffeine equivalent to 5 cups of coffee per day reduced the build up of destructive plaques in the brain.
  • 8. Asthma. Caffeine in coffee is related to theophylline, an old asthma medication. Caffeine can open airways and improve asthma symptoms.
  • 9. Stroke – Recent studies show a correlation between coffee drinking and a lower risk of stoke.
  • 10. Cancer – Certain forms of cancer risk, especially colon and pancreatic, are correlated to coffee intake.

More on coffee’s cons

  • 1. Heart disease. Diterpenes cafestol and kahweol present in unfiltered coffee and caffeine each appear to increase risk of coronary heart disease. High quality studies [6] have confirmed the cholesterol-raising effect of diterpenes. Also, coffee consumption is associated with an increase of plasma homocysteine, a risk factor for coronary heart disease. On the other hand, a lower risk of heart disease among moderate coffee drinkers might be due to antioxidants found in coffee.
  • 2. Cholesterol. Heavy consumption of boiled coffee elevates blood total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels [7]. Unfiltered coffee contains two cholesterol-raising compounds cafestol and kahweol.
  • 3. Blood vessels. Coffee negatively affects the blood vessel tone and function.
  • 4. Heart rhythm disturbances. Coffee can cause rapid or irregular heartbeats (cardiac arrhythmias).
  • 5. Blood pressure. Although coffee drinking is not a significant risk factor for hypertension, it produces unfavorable effects on blood pressure [8] and people prone to hypertension may be more susceptible. Recent Italian study found coffee drinking increases the risk of sustained hypertension for people with already elevated blood pressure.
  • 6. Osteoporosis. Coffee intake may cause extra urinary excretion of calcium. Heavy coffee consumption (600 ml or more) can modestly increase the risk of osteoporosis, especially in women with a low calcium intake [9].
  • 7. Heartburn. A cup of coffee can trigger  heartburn.
  • 8. Sleep. High amounts of caffeine taken before going to sleep can cause difficulty falling asleep, tendency to be awakened more readily by sudden noises, and a decreased quality of sleep. However, some people can drink coffee and fall right asleep.
  • 9. Dehydration. The caffeine in coffee is a mild diuretic and can increase urine excretion.
  • 10. Dependence. Caffeine is a mild central nervous system stimulant, and produces dependence. Caffeine withdrawal is thus a real syndrome and you may get days of headache and irritability if you choose to quit. However, it is relatively easy to break this habit.

Is Smoking Bad For You?

Is Smoking Bad

For You?

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) We know that smoking can cause some major illnesses, including heart disease, cancer, and certainly respiratory disease that all lead to untimely or premature death.  It is reported that nearly half a million people in the USA  die prematurely (about 1/5th of annual deaths) and 100,000 in the UK due to smoking. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), nearly a 100 billion dollars are also wasted annually because of lost productivity.

Smoking is  the single largest preventable global cause of death. In addition,  second-hand smoke exposure is a major health hazard.

Smoking causes cancer

A stunning 90% of lung cancer victims developed their condition due to smoking. Smokers also have a significantly higher risk of  many other forms of cancer, including kidney, esophagus, nose, mouth, cervical, bowel, pancreas, liver and so on.

Why does smoking raise cancer risk?

The answer is simple. There are over 4,000 different and often toxic ingredients in cigarette smoke that can harm us. Tobacco smoke, however, consists mainly of three ingredients:

  • Nicotine  is not known as a carcinogenic. Rather it is addictive. Nicotine gets smoker’s quickly hooked.  It reaches the brain in just 15 seconds after inhalation. Nicotine is used also a controlled insecticide where its use leads to vomiting, seizures, and an overall depression of the central nervous system, as well as growth retardation. It impairs a fetus’ development.
  • Carbon Monoxide is a tasteless poisonous gas. The body finds it hard to differentiate carbon monoxide from oxygen and absorbs it readily into the bloodstream.  Carbon monoxide causes fatigue, weakness, and dizziness. It is also a cardiovascular depressant. It is especially toxic for babies in the womb, infants and smokers with impaired immune systems.
  • Tar is carcinogenic.  Worse yet, when a smoker inhales, about 70% of the tar remains in their lungs. If you try a smoker’s handkerchief test (fill the mouth with smoke but don’t inhale, and rather blow the smoke through the handkerchief) and you will see the sticky dark brown stains.  Do this again, but this time inhale and the handkerchief only has a faint light brown stain. The rest rains in your lungs and other respiratory channels.

Smoking and heart/cardiovascular disease

Smoking is a known cause of atherosclerosis, thus contributing to  coronary heart disease. People with coronary heart disease are much more likely to have a heart attack.

Smoking worsens a major heart disease risk factor. It does so by raising blood pressure. This makes it harder to exercise and to function overall.  A much higher percentage of smokers have strokes compared to others of the same age.  Those who smoke run a higher risk of developing aortic aneurysm and arterial disease. When we inhale smoke regularly, the cerebrovascular system is damaged. Additionally female smokers who use contraceptives has a still higher risk of developing coronary heart disease and stroke. Also if you smoke your levels of HDL or good cholesterol will drop. If you have a history of heart disease and smoke, forget it.You are literally playing with fire to snuff out your life premaurely.

What are Cigarettes?

Straight Up

By Oliver Sparks, Staff Writer

(Healingtalks) Cigarettes are something that will mess up our minds. Straight up!

The PrimaryMind Twister in Cigarettes

The primary psychoactive, or “mind twisting” chemical in cigarettes,  is obviously nicotine.
“Mind twisting” means changing your thought process unnaturally and harmfully.

We fall for this because sometimes we get stressed and need a quick fix. When that first warm inhaling feel of sweet carbon monoxide and fiberglass fills your chest, in just 10 seconds, it appears all stress is gone. Now it’s up to you to finish the cigarette, slowly rotting your lungs.

So there is a catch. Yes you get immediate gratification for a price. In a decade or two you mess up your lungs – what filters and brings in oxygen, the carrier of life, to all of your cells.

What’s Else Is In Cigarettes

And that’s not all. Over 4,300 more separate chemicals can be found in a single cigarette. But when these all are burned together, they cause even more toxic chemical compounds to form. This is why, in 1970, Nixon passed a bill requiring a warning label on all packs of cigarettes, now commonly known as the Surgeon General’s Warning. Additionally the bill outlawed TV cigarette ads in commercials. Yet cigarette smoking recently is on an upswing, especially among teens.

As it turns out, approximately one quarter of the youth alive in the Western Pacific Region (East Asia and the Pacific) today will die from tobacco use. Cigarette smoking is the second major cause of premature death, worldwide.

So what are cigarettes?

A ticking time bomb in tiny tubes that should all have skull and bones marked on the them by law.

A smoking cylindrical death and a cause of dismemberment.

IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IT….ASK SANA, PICTURED ABOVE…AFTER HIS TRACHEOTOMY

Global issue of tobacco use

Global Issue

of Tobacco Use

Based on an article by Anup Shah

(Healingtalks) Tobacco and smoking have a number of negative effects:

  • Tobacco smoking kills
  • Tobacco exacerbates poverty
  • Tobacco contributes to world hunger by diverting prime land away from food production
  • Tobacco production damages the environment
  • Tobacco reduces economic productivity
  • While the Tobacco industry may employ people, this can be considered an example of “wasted labor”, capital and resources.

When governments and organizations have attempted to control tobacco (for example, where it is used, or how it is advertised), the tobacco industry uses its enormous resources to derail or weaken laws and agreements.

These issues are introduced below.

Tobacco smoking kills

The world’s premier health organization, the World Health Organization (WHO) is quite blunt about the impacts of tobacco and smoking:

  • Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world.
    • It is currently responsible for the death of 1 in 10 adults
    • It is the leading preventable causes of all deaths
    • It kills Tobacco up to half of its regular users.
    • In 2005, tobacco caused 5.4 million deaths (1 every 6 seconds)
    • If current smoking patterns continue, it will cause some 8 million deaths each year by 2030
    • Tobacco caused 100 million deaths in the 20th century.
    • At current trends up to one billion will die in the 21st century

  • An estimated 1.3 billion people smoke
    • 84% of all smokers live in developing and transitional economy countries
    • Most people start smoking before the age of 18; almost a quarter of these individuals begin using tobacco before the age of 10
    • 47.5% of all men smoke compared to 10.3% of women.
  • Tobacco is the fourth most common risk factor for disease worldwide.
  • Tobacco is deadly in any form or disguise:
    • Cigarettes, pipes, bidies, kreteks, clove cigarettes, snus, snuff, smokeless, cigars…
    • Mild, light, low tar, full flavor, fruit flavored, chocolate flavored, natural, additive-free, organic cigarettes, PREPS (Potentially Reduced-Exposure Products), harm-reduced

  • An estimated 200,000 workers die every year due to exposure to smoke at work; The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that second-hand smoke is responsible for about 3000 lung cancer deaths annually among non-smokers in the country.
  • In 2000, fire caused by tobacco smoking caused
    • 10% of all fire deaths
    • 300,000 deaths
    • US$27 billion in costs

Tobacco Exacerbates Poverty

It is worth citing the WHO again for a summary of how tobacco exacerbates poverty:

Tobacco and poverty are inextricably linked. Many studies have shown that in the poorest households in some low-income countries as much as 10% of total household expenditure is on tobacco [and therefore] less money to spend on basic items such as food, education and health care. In addition to its direct health effects, tobacco leads to malnutrition, increased health care costs and premature death. It also contributes to a higher illiteracy rate, since money that could have been used for education is spent on tobacco instead. Tobacco’s role in exacerbating poverty has been largely ignored by researchers in both fields.

Why is tobacco a public health priority?, World Health Organization, December 1, 2004

John Madeley also notes in his book, Big Business Poor People (Zed Books, 1999), that heavy advertising of tobacco by Transnational Corporations (TNCs) can “convince the poor to smoke more, and to use money they might have spent on food or health care, to buy cigarettes instead.”

Tobacco contributes to world hunger, diverting prime land from food production

Smoking also contributes to world hunger as the tobacco industry diverts huge amounts of land from producing food to producing tobacco as John Madely also notes:

Dr Judith MacKay, Director of the Asian Consultancy on Tobacco Control in Hong Kong, claims that tobacco’s “minor” use of land denies 10 to 20 million people of food. “Where food has to be imported because rich farmland is being diverted to tobacco production, the government will have to bear the cost of food imports,” she points out.

… The bottom line for governments of developing countries is that the net economic costs of tobacco are profoundly negative—the cost of treatment, disability and death exceeds the economic benefits to producers by at least US$200 billion annually “with one third of this loss being incurred by developing countries”.

John Madeley, Big Business Poor Peoples; The Impact of Transnational Corporations on the World’s Poor, (Zed Books, 1999) pp. 53, 57

Tobacco production damages the environment

Madeley also describes in detail other impacts on land from tobacco use:

  • The land that has been destroyed or degraded to grow tobacco has affects on nearby farms. As forests, for example, are cleared to make way for tobacco plantations, then the soil protection it provides is lost and is more likely to be washed away in heavy rains. This can lead to soil degradation and failing yields.
  • A lot of wood is also needed to cure tobacco leaves.
  • Tobacco uses up more water, and has more pesticides applied to it, further affecting water supplies. These water supplies are further depleted by the tobacco industry recommending the planting of quick growing, but water-thirsty eucalyptus trees.
  • Child labor is often needed in tobacco farms.

For more detail, refer to Big Business Poor Peoples; The Impact of Transnational Corporations on the World’s Poor, by John Madeley, (Zed Books, 1999) ch. 4.

Tobacco smoking damages the environment

In The Tobacco Atlas; Costs to the Economy PDF formatted document (last accessed July 2, 2008), the WHO noted the impact of fires caused by smoking (10% of all fire deaths, killing 300,000 people, costing $27 billion).

It also noted that 1987 saw the world’s worst forest fire caused by cigarettes happened in China in 1987, killing 300 people, making 5,000 homeless, and destroying 1.3 million hectares of land.

This hints at the side-effects of tobacco use; costly forest fires which often make for sensational headlines, especially in dry, hot conditions.

With increasing concern about climate change, the extra carbon dioxide released by such forest fires does not help.

There are also other less direct impacts to the environment. For example,

  • The resources required to make cigarette lighters and related products, to package and sell them
  • The resources required to box and package tobacco products
  • The resources required to employ people working in the industry, to advertise and market the products
  • etc.

(Many lighters are made from plastics and require a small amount of fuel. In the vast quanitities they are produced these small amounts of oil and related products that go into these can add up. As people are getting jittery about high oil prices, clean energy and so on, these kind of things add to those concerns, even if this is not seen as a priority concern.)

Given that tobacco use has no benefit for society, these costs further highlight wasted resources. While tobacco companies are somewhat held to account for the additional costs to people’s health, they are rarely held accountable for promoting products which have these additional consequences.

Tobacco Reduces Economic Productivity

Summarizing from the WHO again:

The economic costs of tobacco use are equally devastating. In addition to the high public health costs of treating tobacco-caused diseases, tobacco kills people at the height of their productivity, depriving families of breadwinners and nations of a healthy workforce. Tobacco users are also less productive while they are alive due to increased sickness. A 1994 report estimated that the use of tobacco resulted in an annual global net loss of US$ 200 thousand million, a third of this loss being in developing countries.

Why is tobacco a public health priority?, World Health Organization, December 1, 2004

A report by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids says that from a socioeconomic and environmental perspective, there is little benefit in tobacco growing PDF formatted document, and that “While a few large-scale tobacco growers have prospered, the vast majority of tobacco growers in the Global South barely eke out a living toiling for the companies.” Furthermore, “the cigarette companies continue to downplay or ignore the many serious economic and environmental costs associated with tobacco cultivation, such as chronic indebtedness among tobacco farmers (usually to the companies themselves), serious environmental destruction caused by tobacco farming, and pesticide-related health problems for farmers and their families.”

The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

The world’s first global health treaty—the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (summary), adopted May 2003—became international law in February 2005.

Amongst other things, the treaty requires countries to

  • Impose restrictions on tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion;
  • Establish new packaging and labeling of tobacco products (e.g. ban misleading descriptions such as “low tar” and “lights”;)
  • Establish clean indoor air controls; and
  • Strengthen legislation to clamp down on tobacco smuggling.

This treaty was adopted “despite a sustained campaign by the tobacco lobby via certain governments to dilute it—particularly the United States, Germany and Japan,” as the British Medical Journal (BMJ) reported (“Tobacco Lobby Threatens to Derail Global Antismoking Treaty”, February 12, 2005, Volume 330, p. 325.)

Furthermore, “pressure from the industry has not let up … the United States proposed a clear reference to global trade rules” potentially allowing companies and governments to attack the legally binding health treaty under trade laws, “even though the … treaty gives governments the right to prioritize health over trade issues.”

As the BMJ also noted, “poor countries are now more vulnerable to the powerful tobacco industry and need support in implementing tough anti-tobacco measures.”

In recent years, in wealthy countries, attempts have been made to introduce smoke-free legislation. In California for example, smoke-free laws were introduced in July 1998. As the Californian Medical Association’s president, Dr. Robert Hertza commented, “California’s lung cancer rates have fallen six times faster than in US states without smoke-free laws.” (“Smoke-free workplaces would hit tobacco profits”, BMJ, Vol. 330, p.325) This illustrates the potential of treaties such as this global tobacco treaty to save lives of millions.

The WHO has defined a policy approach summarized by the acronym, MPOWER, to

  • Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies
  • Protect people from tobacco smoke
  • Offer help to quit tobacco use
  • Warn about the dangers of tobacco
  • Enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, and
  • Raise taxes on tobacco

As their report (see previous link) argues, these measures are shown to work and have a significant effect on reducing tobacco consumption, when applied.

In a 2008 report analyzing global tobacco use and control, the WHO finds that

  • Only 5% of the global population is protected by comprehensive national smoke-free legislation and 40% of countries still allow smoking in hospitals and schools;
  • Only 5% of the world’s population lives in countries with comprehensive national bans on tobacco advertising and promotion;
  • Just 15 countries, representing 6% of the global population, mandate pictorial warnings on tobacco packaging;
  • Services to treat tobacco dependence are fully available in only nine countries, covering 5% of the world’s people;
  • Tobacco tax revenues are more than 4000 times greater than spending on tobacco control in middle-income countries and more than 9000 times greater in lower-income countries. High- income countries collect about 340 times more money in tobacco taxes than they spend on tobacco control.

Tobacco Industry Hitting Back

The tobacco companies have tried various ways to minimize damage impact to their sales and reputation. They have sought to expand markets in other areas, especially the Third World as they find the First World slowly but increasingly hostile to their industry. Attempts at regulation are fought with various public relations attempts, and corruption.

Four companies now control 75 percent of global cigarette sales, as sophisticated strategies for supply, production and sales have produced increasingly popular global brands.

The onward march of Marlboro man epitomises this globalisation, exploiting the opportunities presented by trade liberalisation, regional organisations and the communications revolution. Control efforts are undermined by the industry’s success in developing favourable relationships with many governments, the magnitude of their foreign direct investments and the scale of advertising, marketing and sponsorship campaigns. In addition, large-scale cigarette smuggling, which comprises one-third of total exports, depletes tax revenues and further jeopardises public health.

Controlling the global tobacco epidemic. Towards a transnational response, ID21 Insights, March 2001

Expanding Third World Markets

In recent years, the damage caused to a person’s health by tobacco consumption has been confirmed, attracted particular scrutiny at tobacco firms because they knew this for years, but attempted to hide their research.

Some countries, such as the US have had the resources and political will to tackle the large tobacco corporations. However, combined with the resulting smaller and tougher markets in the rich countries, multinational tobacco firms have intensified their efforts in other regions of world such as Asia, to continue growing and selling cigarettes, as well as expanding advertising (to create demand, not meet). And they have been successful, too. 84% of the estimated 1.3 billion smokers live in developing and transitional economy countries as the WHO has noted.

Targeting Children, Teenagers and Women

Almost understandably, tobacco companies are compelled to target the young and women.

Teenagers are future consumers often highly impressionable and in some societies with significant disposable income; for any company where brand and consumption of their products are important, attracting younger members of society increases the chances of longer term lock-in.

With the tobacco industry, ironically perhaps, as their products kill their customers (or as customers try to quit), they need to find newer consumers. Younger people will take a longer time to die or quit, thus increasingly the likelihood of continued sales.

Women generally smoke a lot less than men, everywhere. It can be deadly to unborn children, too. However, tobacco companies see women as an untapped market where there is more potential to increase consumption than with men.

So, unchecked and profit being the natural motive for the tobacco companies, children and women are natural target consumers.

For their 2008 World No Tobacco Day event, the WHO noted that “Most people start smoking before the age of 18, and almost a quarter of these individuals begin using tobacco before the age of 10.”

An example of how self-regulation had failed was provided by a documentary about British American Tobacco pushing tobacco to children in Africa, produced by the BBC (which aired in July 2008).

It noted how BAT’s own guidelines to stop selling to children in various ways were clearly ignored by itself in places such as Mauritius, Nigeria and Malawi. From selling single sticks (which is intended to target children), to advertising and promotions of the sort readily banned in most countries, to organizing events and popular concerts heavily branded with BAT’s logos and products, all pointed to BAT encouraging young people, as young as 8 or 10, to smoke.

(A separate BBC article also summarizes this documentary in more detail.)

Another area where children are increasingly smoking is India. A survey by the WHO found that nearly 17% of students in India aged 15 and under use some form of tobacco, most of them cigarettes. While public bans on smoking had some positive effects, this rise has been a concern, and the study urged that more be done to tackle advertising.

Public Relations and WHO-Discrediting Campaigns

The tobacco industry has gone to extraordinary levels to discredit the World Health Organisation and others that are fighting tobacco issues, a WHO report charges.

A Committee of Experts had been set up in October 1999 to “inquire into the nature and extent of undue influence which the tobacco industry had exercised over UN organisations.”

This Committee produced the report that “found that the tobacco industry regarded the World Health Organization as one of their leading enemies, and that the industry had a planned strategy to ‘contain, neutralise, reorient’ WHO’s tobacco control initiatives.” They added that the tobacco industry documents show that they carried out their plan by:

  • Staging events to divert attention from the public health issues raised by tobacco use;
  • Attempting to reduce budgets for the scientific and policy activities carried out by WHO;
  • Pitting other UN agencies against WHO;
  • Seeking to convince developing countries that WHO’s tobacco control program was a “First World” agenda carried out at the expense of the developing world;
  • Distorting the results of important scientific studies on tobacco;
  • Discrediting the WHO as an institution.

Corruption

PAHO, the Pan American Health Organization (a regional office for the Americas for the WHO) issued a report titled Profits over People (17 December 2002). Looking at the Latin American and Caribbean countries and information from Philip Morris and British American Tobacco, the report details how the tobacco companies:

  • Were intensely competitive but collaborated in campaigns against common threats to the industry
  • Hired scientists throughout the region to misrepresent the science linking secondhand smoke to serious diseases, while cloaking in secrecy any connection of these scientists with the tobacco industry;
  • Designed “youth smoking prevention” campaigns and programs primarily as public relations exercises aimed at deterring meaningful regulation of tobacco marketing;
  • Had detailed knowledge of smuggling networks and markets and actively sought to increase their share of the illegal market by structuring marketing campaigns and distribution routes around it; and
  • Enjoyed access to key government officials and succeeded in weakening or killing tobacco control legislation in a number of countries.

They also added that “these tactics and strategies are not unique to the Americas region.”

Tobacco Companies Accused of Attempting to Undermine Tobacco Treaty

The non-governmental organization, Corporate Accountability International, reports that the tobacco industry is interfering with health policy around the world PDF formatted document. The report summarized as follows:

Thailand’s case stands out as an impressive example of a developing country successfully overcoming years of powerful tobacco industry interference in health policy [by putting in place effective tobacco advertising bans]. In Nigeria, Big Tobacco is using its economic muscle to try to keep treaty ratification off the table for discussion by manipulating media coverage and influencing government agencies. Guatemala’s current situation exemplifies the need for Article 5.3 of the WHO FCTC—requiring parties to the treaty to protect public health policy from industry interference—and the importance of being vigilant to interference throughout the implementation process. The case of Guatemala also illustrates a new variation of old tobacco industry tricks, where Big Tobacco tries to pull the wool over policymakers’ eyes by advocating “regulation” while drafting legislation that actually weakens or conflicts with the tobacco treaty.

Big Tobacco’s Attempts to Derail the Global Tobacco Treaty PDF formatted document, Corporate Accountability International, October 6, 2005

In Africa’s most populous nation (thus an attractive potential market for tobacco firms), Nigeria, the report was very critical of British American Tobacco (BAT):

In Nigeria BAT’s tactics to undermine health policies include attempting to bribe journalists with cash prizes for favorable media coverage and giving expensive gifts to regulatory agencies and government officials. The combination of a misinformed public and easily influenced government is a proven recipe for weak, corporate-friendly regulations.

Media is a top target in BAT’s efforts to misinform Nigerians. The corporation hosts expensive meals for media owners and editors, sponsors journalist association meetings, syndicates articles favoring corporate interests and tobacco products, and leverages its advertising power to stop the publication of critical articles.

Big Tobacco’s Attempts to Derail the Global Tobacco Treaty PDF formatted document, Corporate Accountability International, October 6, 2005

But there is corruption at government levels, for they target government officials too, the report added. “Common BAT tactics to influence government officials include intense lobbying and expensive gifts.”

In Guatemala, the report accuses Philip Morris/Altria and BAT of “trying to stall or derail Guatemala’s treaty process” which goes against the tobacco Framework treaty which requires that the tobacco industry does not interfere with government policies.

For further information in this area, see also the following:

Reports such as those mentioned above show that there is a lot of political maneuvering by large tobacco companies to lower prices, to increase sales, etc. In addition, the poor and small farmers are the ones most affected by the impacts of tobacco companies. The hard cash earned from this “foreign investment” is offset by the costs in social and public health and the environment. In effect, profits are privatized; costs are socialized.

Wasted wealth, resources and labor

While the tobacco industry no doubt provides jobs for many people around the world, the total negative effects of the industry and of smoking tobacco suggests that this is “wasted wealth” and “wasted labor.”

Talented scientists and business people currently employed by this industry could potentially be working in other areas contributing to society in a more positive way, while agricultural workers could potentially be producing less damaging products, for example.

As noted earlier, wastage also occurs in the form of deaths from fires, the environmental damage caused by forest fires started by cigarettes, the resources needed to package, distribute, and employ people in the tobacco industry, the resources needed to create additional products such as cigarette lighters, promotional materials, etc.

In a way, there is also the extra cost of anti-tobacco campaigns! Arguably, without the excessive promotion by the tobacco industry, much time and resources would not have to be devoted by the World Health Organization and other campaigners on raising these issues; other concerns could then be given more attention.

While people have attempted to hold tobacco companies to account for the health burden they introduce, they are rarely held to account for these other forms of waste.

(Wasted wealth and wasted labor and wasted resources are discussed in more depth later in this site’s section on consumption and consumerism.)

Note that this does not have to be an authoritarian ban, as free choice is still a treasured value. Instead:

  • True costing of tobacco (factoring in health, environment and social costs, as well as additional economic costs that might be externalized) would increase the cost of tobacco products to a higher and more realistic value.
  • That could help pay for dealing with the various damages. It may potentially deter those whose “free” choice has been influenced by the numerous public relations, advertising and propaganda of the tobacco industry. (Some countries such as the UK do add taxes onto cigarettes, but largely to only cover health costs.)
  • Enormous PR related resources would be freed up for other needs, such as helping the tobacco industry clean up, diversifying into other areas, etc.
  • Heavily-burdened health services would additionally free up, thus leading to a potentially “snow-balling” series of positive effects.

A lot of this is perhaps wishful thinking, as the tobacco industry would lose out a lot, and no industry would like that. Their size, power and thus influence, means that they will (and have) hit back in many ways to dilute effective action.

Free choice?

It is often argued by those who prefer to smoke and not see more and more restrictions put in place that it is their free choice to smoke. Some will add that they do not smoke in front of children, etc and thus sound responsible.

Yet, on the one hand how free a choice is it to decide to smoke? Advertising, peer pressure, modern culture, stress all combine to give reasons for people to smoke.

A documentary about British American Tobacco pushing tobacco to children in Africa, produced by the BBC, tried to ask shareholders at an annual meeting what they thought: one smugly responded that he was for free choice and happy that the questioner lived in a society where he was free to ask such questions. In other words, the “free” choice to smoke was equated with the notion of freedom. This was just a regurgitation of marketing from tobacco companies that promoted similar messages decades earlier. The irony that this person “freely” commented this and had not possibly been influenced by such marketing, perhaps subconsciously, was not noted!

Furthermore, it may seem like a free choice to only harm oneself when deciding to smoke, but second hand smoking also kills.

And perhaps more remote than that is people half way around the world may be going hungry because land that could have been growing and sustaining local people is now diverted into environmentally damaging and wasteful tobacco production.

If one does not wish to give up smoking because it is considered free choice, how about quitting smoking so others may have a choice?

Secondhand Smoke: Another Reason To Quit Smoking Cigarettes

No Comments 10 August 2011

Secondhand Smoke Another Reason To Give Up Cigarettes

Secondhand Smoke:

Another Reason

To Give Up Cigarettes

Basics

(Healingtalks) Around 1.3 billion people smoke cigarettes worldwide. Statistically, the average smoker smokes around 30 cigarettes a day. A cigarette is made from cut up tobacco leaves that are rolled up and smoked. Cigarettes do not only cause health problems for the person smoking them, but also for the people that are around them. When a person smokes they breathe in the cigarette smoke, and then blow out the smoke. The smoke that is blown out by the smoker is called second hand smoke.

Secondhand Smoke Exposure

The areas where people are most commonly exposed to second hand smoke include the workplace and the home. In the United States roughly 126 million people who don’t smoke are exposed to second hand smoke. Second hand smoke has a number of effects on the non-smoker.

  • For people who have asthma, smoke can cause severe asthma attacks.
  • It can contribute to respiratory infections including bronchitis or pneumonia.
  • Secondhand smoke can also cause heart disease and cancer leading to death in people who do not smoke. Heart disease can lead to heart attacks in patients that otherwise may not have been pre-disposed to suffering one.

Prevention for Secondhand Smoke Exposure

Preventative measures should be taken to avoid secondhand smoke. If someone in the household smokes inside the home, one can ask them to smoke outside. For people who smoke in cars, drive separately, and do not drive with people who smoke while driving. Avoid areas where people are smoking, if at all possible walk as far around them as possible to avoid exposure. If someone you are with is smoking, it’s okay to say please don’t smoke that around me.

Harmful Effects of Smoking

  • Smokers are more likely to get heart disease, have a heart attack, or get cancer.
  • There are many cancer risks involved with smoking, including lung cancer.
  • Not only does smoking pose the threat of health risks, it also can result in unwanted side effects. The cigarettes often leave the smokers’ teeth stained a very distinct yellow.
  • Another unwanted effect of smoking is the odor of the smoke. The smell of smoke attaches itself to everything. The smokers’ hair, clothing, and body will smell of smoke after smoking a cigarette. Wherever the person smokes, it will make everything there smell like smoke. People who smoke in their car are likely to have a car that will smell of smoke, and the same goes for homes.Over the years the government on a national and on a state level has had laws and regulations pertaining to cigarette smoking. In public buildings people are not allowed to smoke. Businesses have a right to allow or deny smoking on their premises. More and more places today are cracking down, trying to get smoke free places.

Smoking Cessation Plans

There are a variety of smoking cessation options available for people who smoke and want to quit. Some of the most common methods that have been around awhile now include nicotine patches, and nicotine gum. These allow the body to have some nicotine in the system, so the person isn’t quitting abruptly. Some people quit cold turkey, which means that they suddenly stop all cigarettes and no longer use nicotine. There are prescription drugs available for people to help stop smoking. Other options people can use to quit smoking include hypnosis, therapy, and health counseling.

Don’t Kid Yourself – Smoking Is Lethal

Smoking contributes to around 400,000 deaths per year. People who smoke are risking serious health problems, and pose a threat to non-smokers health too. Laws and regulations have been placed over the years to help keep the public healthy. For people who do smoke, there are many cessation options available to choose from.

Teen Smoking Skyrockets

Breaking News:

Teen Smoking Skyrockets

(Healingtalks) A study reported that American teenagers are becoming casual smokers, instead of heavy/regularly smokers.
In general young adults already had the highest smoking rates of any age group in the U.S., and thue new strategies to decrease young adult smoking are needed.

Researchers found that occasional smoking among teens rose from 1991 to 2009, while heavy smoking fell significantly.

We’re seeing a broad national phenomenon,” said Dr. Terry Pechachek, a study co-author from the Centers for Disease Control.

“With fewer cigarettes, the price effect, smoke-free policies and a change in the broad public awareness of risk, the heaviest patterns of use are becoming very rare,” Pechachek said.

But he warned against assuming that moderate smoking is safer in the long-run.

“It is important to note that light and intermittent smoking still has significant health risks,” Pechachek explained. “We think there may be an emerging pattern. We may be creating a new type of smoker that may be more durable, that are adapting to smoke-free environments and to changing social norms.”

Pechacek said that the high percentage of intermittent teenage smokers is unacceptable.

Teachers and parents should not downplay the risks of teen smoking

“It’s still a very risky behavior. We want to get across to people that although this is a positive trend, it’s very unacceptable to have so many children exposing themselves to something so addictive. The greatest danger is minimizing the risk.”

Here is more information on the study results

Major Rise in Teen Casual Smoking

Heavy smoking was defined by enjoying more than 11 cigarettes per day. Moderate smoking was defined as enjoying between six to 10 cigarettes per day. Light smoking was defined by having to five cigarettes per day.  Between 1991 and 2009, heavy smoking among teenagers has decreased by 10 percent, from 18 to 8 percent.

During this time, casual teen smoking has increased from 67 percent to 79 percent.

No significant changes in smoking trends for African American teenagers was observed, but for Hispanic teenagers, the heavy smoking rate increased from 3.1 percent to 6.4 percent.

Risks of Teen Smoking

Smoking has different risks for people who smoke at all. By smoking, people have an increased risk for heart disease, heart attack, lung cancer, and other types of cancer. An estimated 90% of all lung cancer in males are caused by smoking. An estimated 80% of lung cancer in females is caused by smoking. Teenagers today are even more vulnerable because of the introduction of ever more adulterated GMO, and sugar-addictive fast foods that help create a teen obesity and diabetics epidemic.

Resulting Early Deaths From Smoking

According to the CDC, smoking cigarettes has contributed to an estimated 443,000 deaths annually.

Nearly one of every five deaths in the U.S. are related to smoking. Tobacco causes more deaths per year than Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders all combined.

This study was reported in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.

How To Fight

Teen Smoking

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

Overview of Teen Smoking

(Healingtalks) Each day in the United States, 3,900 teens try smoking for the first time, estimates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Don’t allow your teen to become just another statistic. By talking with your teen in a frank and mature way, while setting a good example, you can help fight teen smoking and convince your teen to never start in the first place. Luckily, resources and parental support can help your teen to make the right choices when it comes to smoking.

Discussions with Children and Teens on Smoking

Start the discussion about smoking at a young age. The American Cancer Society recommends that the discussion begin with your child is only 5 or 6 years old. Talking about the health and social effects of smoking should be an ongoing dialogue in your home so that when your child grows into a teen, your opinion on cigarettes has been made clear. The ACS notes that many children take their first puff at age 11; it’s never too early to start talking about smoking.

Disclosure of the Dangers of Teen Smoking

Point out the health, social and economical dangers of smoking to your teen. Ask why he would want to participate in a habit that makes his clothes and hair smell, his body sick and his wallet empty. Ask your teen to make a list of the various pros and cons of smoking and to weigh the costs versus the gains to make the decision on smoking on his own.

Role Play Teen Pressure to Smoke

Try role-playing exercises with your teen to ensure that she knows what to do in a situation where a cigarette is offered to her, suggests the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Pretend to be a peer and offer your child a cigarette. Remember to be as convincing as another teen might be, trying to entice your teen by saying smoking is fun, lots of people do it and it’s not like he’ll become addicted. Coach your teen through the things he can say to politely say “no” and leave the situation.

Offer a Good Example By Not Smoking in a Teen Household

Offer a good example for your teen. MayoClinic.com notes that smoking is more prevalent among teens whose parents also smoke. To set a good example, make sure that you show respect for your body and health by exercising and eating well, not only by abstaining from smoking. This shows your teen that you respect your body and want to maintain good health, ideals and values that can be passed on to your teen.

Direct Your Teen to Online Resources

Show your teen online resources that she can read on her own time. These resources, like the ones found at Kids Health, a division of the Nemours Foundation, and the American Academy of Family Physician’s Web site, give the health risks of smoking in plain terms that your teen can understand. It may help her to see that you’re not the only adult who disapproves of smoking. See also the further articles on smoking below.

what is really in a cigarette

What is really

in a Cigarette?

by K. H. Ginzel, M.D.

Most Outstanding Ingredient in a Cigarette

(Healingtalks) For those who still don’t know — let me emphatically state that cigarette smoking is a true addiction! To grasp this well-documented fact, one really doesn’t have to study all the supporting scientific evidence. One simply needs to consider that no other drug is self-administered with the persistence, regularity and frequency of a cigarette. At an average rate of ten puffs per cigarette, a one to three pack-a-day smoker inhales 70,000 to 200,000 individual doses of mainstream smoke during a single year. Ever since its large scale industrial production early in this century, the popularity of the modern cigarette has been spreading like wildfire. Here is the first, and perhaps the most significant answer to the title question: Addiction is in a cigarette. Probing into what makes a cigarette so irresistible, we find that much of the recent research corroborates earlier claims: It is for the nicotine in tobacco that the smoker smokes, the chewer chews, and the dipper dips. Hence, nicotine is in a cigarette.

Nicotine and Much More in What’s in a Cigarette

In contrast to other drugs, nicotine delivery from tobacco carries an ominous burden of chemical poisons and cancer-producing substances that boggle the mind. Many toxic agents are in a cigarette. However, additional toxicants are manufactured during the smoking process by the chemical reactions occurring in the glowing tip of the cigarette. The number is staggering: more than 4,000 hazardous compounds are present in the smoke that smokers draw into their lungs and which escapes into the environment between puffs.

Cigarette’s Concentrated Pollution of Lungs

The burning of tobacco generates more than 150 billion tar particles per cubic inch, constituting the visible portion of cigarette smoke. According to chemists at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, cigarette smoke is 10,000 times more concentrated than the automobile pollution at rush hour on a freeway. The lungs of smokers, puffing a daily ration of 20 to 60 low to high tar cigarettes, collect an annual deposit of one-quarter to one and one-half pounds of the gooey black material, amounting to a total of 15 to 90 million pounds of carcinogen-packed tar for the aggregate of current American smokers. Hence, tar is in a cigarette.

Cigarette’s Air Pollution

But visible smoke contributes only 5-8% to the total output of a cigarette. The remaining bulk that cannot be seen makes up the so-called vapor or gas phase of cigarette “smoke.” It contains, besides nitrogen and oxygen, a bewildering assortment of toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, acrolein, hydrogen cyanide, and nitrogen oxides, to name just a few. Smokers efficiently extract almost 90% of the particulate as well as gaseous constituents (about 50% in the case of carbon monoxide) from the mainstream smoke of the 600 billion cigarettes consumed annually in the U.S. In addition, 2.25 million metric tons of sidestream smoke chemicals pollute the enclosed air spaces of homes, offices, conference rooms, bars, restaurants, and automobiles in this country. Hence, pollution is in a cigarette.

In addition, there is the chemical burden from sidestream smoke, afflicting smokers and non-smokers alike. Based on the reported concentrations in enclosed, cigarette smoke-polluted areas, the estimated intakes of nicotine, acrolein, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde peak at 200, 130, 75, 7, and 3 times the ADI, respectively. The high exposure to acrolein is especially unsettling. This compound is not only a potent respiratory irritant, but qualifies, according to current studies, as a carcinogen.

Illnesses That Follow Smoking

The witch’s brew of poisons invades the organs and tissues of smokers and nonsmokers, adults and children, born as well as unborn, and causes cancer, emphysema, heart disease, fetal growth retardation and other problems during pregnancy. The harm inflicted by all other addictions combined pales in comparison. Smoking-related illness, for example, claims in a few days as many victims as cocaine does in a whole year. Hence, disease is in a cigarette.

Limited Regulation of Cigarette Toxins and Carcinogens

The irony is that many of the poisons found in cigarette smoke are subject to strict regulation by federal laws which, on the other hand, specifically exempt tobacco products. “Acceptable Daily Intake,” ADI, is the amount of a chemical an individual can be exposed to for an extended period without apparent detriment to health.

Regulatory policy aims at restricting exposure to carcinogens to a level where the lifetime risk of cancer would not exceed 1 in 100,000 to 1,000,000. Due to a limited database, approximate upper lifetime risk values could be calculated for only 7 representative cigarette smoke carcinogens. The risk values were extraordinarily high, ranging from 1 in 6,000 to 1 in 16. Because of the awesome amount of carcinogens found in cigarette smoke and the fact that carcinogens combine their individual actions in an additive or even multiplicative fashion, it is not surprising that the actual risk for lung cancer is as high as one in ten. Hence, cancer is in a cigarette.

Among the worst offenders are the nitrosamines. Strictly regulated by federal agencies, their concentrations in beer, bacon, and baby bottle nipples must not exceed 5 to 10 parts per billion. A typical person ingests about one microgram a day, while the smokers’ intake tops this by 17 times for each pack of cigarette smoked. In 1976, a rocket fuel manufacturer in the Baltimore area was emitting dimethylnitrosamine into the surrounding air, exposing the local inhabitants to an estimated 14 micrograms of the carcinogen per day. The plant was promptly shut down. However eagerly the government tries to protect us from outdoor pollution and the carcinogenic risk of consumer products, it blatantly suspends control if the offending chemical is in, or comes from, a cigarette. Hence, hypocrisy is in a cigarette.

But there is still more in a cigarette than addiction, poison, pollution, disease, and hypocrisy. A half century of aggressive promotion and sophisticated advertising that featured alluring role models from theater, film and sport, has invested the cigarette with an enticing imagery.

Deceit and Death in Cigarettes

Imagery which captivates and seduces a growing youngster. The youngster, indispensable for being recruited into the future army of smokers, does not start to smoke cigarettes for the nicotine, but for the false promises they hold. Hence, deceit is in a cigarette.

In summary, no drug ever ingested by humans can rival the long-term debilitating effects of tobacco; the carnage perpetuated by its purveyors; the merciless irreversibility of destiny once the victim contracts lung cancer or emphysema; the militant denial on the part of those who, with the support of stockholders and the sanction of governments, legally push their lethal merchandise across borders and continents killing every year two and one-half to three million people worldwide. All things added together: death is in a cigarette.

K. H. Ginzel, M.D., is Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Arkansas. His work is concentrated in the area of nicotine and its effects.

Panel Urges FDA To Review Menthol in Cigarettes

Panel Urges FDA To Review Menthol in Cigarettes

Panel Urges F.D.A.

to Review Menthol

in Cigarettes

(Healingtalks) A federal advisory panel on Friday said removing menthol cigarettes from the market would benefit public health in the United States but did not make any specific recommendation for action by the Food and Drug Administration.

FDA Authority and Review of Cigarettes

The F.D.A will review the findings of its Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee and perform its own research and policy study, Lawrence R. Deyton, director of the F.D.A. Center for Tobacco Products, said Friday after the advisory group wrapped up a year of study.

The advisory panel’s chairman, Dr. Jonathan M. Samet, a professor of medicine at U.C.L.A., said the committee had found a scientific basis for the added harm caused by menthol in cigarettes, a decision that could provide a legal basis for the F.D.A. to try to limit, phase out or even ban menthol in cigarettes.

The F.D.A., given the authority to regulate the contents of cigarettes by a 2009 law, will make a progress report in about 90 days, Dr. Deyton said. “Now it’s up to us to do our job,” he said.

Industry analysts said they believed the F.D.A. might take a moderate final action.

Any action, however, would pose a host of extremely difficult social and political issues and face a protracted legal challenge by the tobacco industry, which said a ban would have no public health benefit and would open up a criminal black market.

Menthol Cigarette Statistics

Menthol accounts for an estimated 27 percent of the $80 billion cigarette market in the United States and 19 million smokers — a disproportionate number of whom are African-Americans, younger and lower income. Menthol is preferred by more than 80 percent of black smokers, about 22 percent of white smokers, and nearly half of 12- to 17-year-old smokers.

Adverse Impact of Menthol Cigarettes

The panel, in recommendations made public on Friday morning, said evidence showed that menthol led to more youth smoking, made it easier to start smoking and harder to quit.

“Menthol cigarettes have an adverse impact on the public health in the United States,” Dr. Mark Stuart Clanton, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, High Plains Division, in Austin, Tex., said in summarizing the scientific findings.

Panel and Industry Response

The public health finding is the strongest statement yet by any government group in the world involving menthol flavors.

Congress had banned candy, fruit and spice flavorants in tobacco but deferred the politically difficult issue of menthol to the F.D.A.

Under the law, the panel was required to consider the impact of menthol on public health and the likelihood it made it easier to start or harder to quit smoking.

Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco -Free Kids, said, “They’ve shown menthol increases youth usage significantly, which is a trigger for action.”

Any government action would be preceded by a proposed rule and another round of public comments and no doubt, lawsuits. Two tobacco companies filed a lawsuit last month to try to block the advisory committee action or force the F.D.A. to disregard its advice, saying panel members were biased and had financial conflicts of interest from legal and consulting work against tobacco companies, a claim the F.D.A. denied.

Lorillard Tobacco of Greensboro, N.C., which is more than 90 percent reliant on revenue from menthol products and makes the top brand, Newport, is leading the opposition to F.D.A. action and one of its scientists is a nonvoting member of the F.D.A. panel. Jonathan Daniel Heck, Lorillard’s principal scientist, issued the industry view Thursday saying there was no evidence that menthol promoted youth smoking or made it harder to quit.

What Menthol Does and Its Marketing

Menthol provides a cooling sensation that masks the harsh taste of tobacco. Menthol levels have been manipulated to be lower for starter products like Newport, according to findings of the panel based partly on industry documents. Industry research shows younger smokers prefer some but not too much menthol.

Dr. Dorothy K. Hatsukami, a panel member and professor from the Tobacco Use Research Center at the University of Minnesota, said scientific literatures showed smokers who started younger were more likely to have trouble quitting and to die from smoking. “This is the population that’s particularly vulnerable to the effects of menthol cigarette smoking,” Mr. Hatsukami said.

Menthol has also been advertised over the years for claimed health benefits and it has been heavily advertised in African-American communities and magazines. Dr. Melanie Wakefield, an advisory panel member and director of an Australian research center, said menthol cigarettes continued to be marketed with images including the color green that falsely suggested they were healthier.

But Lorillard said the smoking rate of African-American youth was half that of white youth. The company also says there was “no difference in quit-smoking rates between menthol and non-menthol smokers.” Dr. Heck of Lorillard dismissed the false marketing claims as artifacts of decades past — although Dr. Wakefield said their effect persists.

Testing the FDA on the Menthol Issue

More broadly, health groups say the menthol issue poses the first real test of the advisory committee and F.D.A. toughness against cigarettes. The recommendation may signal a willingness to crack down on nicotine, the addictive ingredient in tobacco products. Levels of nicotine, like menthol, have been manipulated by companies to fulfill marketing aims.

The law allows the F.D.A. to regulate tobacco product ingredients but not to ban cigarettes or nicotine entirely.

Major Cigarette Maker Now Lists Ingredients

Major Cigarette Maker

Now Lists Ingredients

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) An American tobacco company now, for the first time,  lists some long-secret ingredients in its cigarettes and directly on the label.

Which Company/Brand of Cigarettes?

Liggett Group  provided a list of its L&M cigarette brand ingredients, to be put on the cigarette packs.

What Tobacco Ingredients?

The 26-item L&M list includes blended tobacco and water, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, natural and artificial licorice flavor, menthol, artificial milk chocolate and natural chocolate flavor, valerian root extract, molasses and vanilla extracts, and cedarwood oil. molasses, phenylacetic acid and the oil of the East Indian mint called patchouli. Less familiar additives include glycerol, propylene glycol, isovaleric acid, hexanoic acid and 3-methylpentanoic acid.

Why L&M lists Its Cigarette Ingredients

The move comes as the state of Massachusetts is trying to compel disclosure of all tobacco ingredients by all cigarette makers, an effort other major tobacco companies are fighting fiercely.

Liggett, which broke with the industry by signing the first settlements with states, supports the Massachusetts effort as well. “Liggett believes that its adult consumers have a right to full disclosure,” Liggett head Bennett S. LeBow said in a statement.  Activists have long pushed for disclosure of the ingredients, in part because consumers tend to be more wary of risks imposed upon them by others than of the risks they knowingly choose.

Exhaustive Public List of Ingredients?

Though at least 600 ingredients are used in American cigarettes (a composite list of 599 additives was privately given to congressional investigators in 1994) , Liggett claims it is giving the public an exhaustive list of every cigarette ingredient used in its brand. Previously tobacco companies also provided cigarette ingredients to the federal Department of Health and Human Services and for more than a decade, but HHS officials are legally not allowed to release that information.

Protecting Tobacco Companies’ Trade Secrets

David Remes, an attorney who represents the four other tobacco companies challenging the state of Massachusetts, said the case comes down to the tobacco industry’s right to protect its trade secrets – or profits over our health!

 Cigarette Ingredients

(Healingtalks ) Cigarette flavors have gone through many changes since cigarettes were first made. Initially, cigarettes were unfiltered, allowing the full “flavor” of the tar to come through. As the public became concerned about the health effects of smoking, filters were added. While this helped alleviate the public’s fears, the result was a cigarette that tasted too bitter.

CIGARETTE FILTERS DON’T WORK

Filters do not remove enough tar to make cigarettes less dangerous. They are just a marketing ploy to trick you into thinking you are smoking a safer cigarette.

A TOBACCO INDUSTRY “SOLUTION”

The solution to the bitter-tasting cigarette was easy — have some chemists add taste-improving chemicals to the tobacco. Unfortunately, some of these chemicals also cause cancer. But not all of the chemicals in your cigarettes are there for taste enhancement.

OTHER CHEMICAL “ENHANCEMENTS” OF CIGARETTES

  • A chemical very similar to rocket fuel helps keep the tip of the cigarette burning at an extremely hot temperature. This allows the nicotine in tobacco to turn into a vapor so your lungs can absorb it more easily.
  • Toilet Bowl Cleaner? Most people prefer to use ammonia for things such as cleaning windows and toilet bowls. You may be surprised to learn that the tobacco industry has found some additional uses for this household product. By adding ammonia to your cigarettes, nicotine in its vapor form can be absorbed through your lungs more quickly. This, in turn, means your brain can get a higher dose of nicotine with each puff.
  • The complete list of chemicals added to your cigarettes is too long to list here.

Here are some examples that will surprise you:

Fungicides and pesticides — Cause many types of cancers and birth defects.

Cadmium — Linked to lung and prostate cancer.

Benzene — Linked to leukemia.

Formaldehyde — Linked to lung cancer.

Nickel — Causes increased susceptibility to lung infections.

IF YOU ARE ANGRY

If you are angry that so many things have been added to the cigarettes you enjoy so much, you should be. Many of these chemicals were added to make you better able to tolerate toxic amounts of cigarette smoke. They were added without regard to your health and with the intent to keep you addicted. As the tobacco industry saying goes, “An addicted customer is a customer for life, no matter how short that life is.” Make sure that you have the last laugh. Regardless of the countless chemicals in your cigarettes, quitting is always your option. Perhaps this list of ingredients that are found in cigarettes is enough to make you want to quit smoking for good!

There are more than 4,000 potential ingredients in a cigarette other than tobacco.

Common additives include yeast, wine, caffeine, beeswax and chocolate. Here are some more interesting ones.

Ammonia – Household cleaner
Angelica root extract – Known to cause cancer in animals
Arsenic – Used in rat poisons
Butane Gas – Used in lighter fluid
Carbon monoxide: -Poisonous gas
Cyanide – Deadly poison
DDT – A banned insecticide
Ethyl Furoate -  Causes liver damage in animals
Lead - Poisonous in high doses
Methoprene – Insecticide
Megastigmatrienone – Chemical naturally found in grapefruit juice
Maltitol - Sweetener for diabetics
Napthalene – Ingredient in mothballs
Methyl isocyanate - Its accidental release killed 2000 people in Bhopal, India in 1984
Polonium – Cancer-causing radioactive element

What’s Really

Up In Smoke?

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

(Healingtalks) There have been many illusions and deceptions promoted by the tobacco industry.  Once upon a time my dad used to sell cigarettes in his grocery store. Both my parents smoked and we had little idea of how harmful this really was. The Marlboro Man looked very sexy and that lady on the Virginia Slims packaging. It took us time to learn the real story, past all the deceptions. Thanks goes here to our primary source of information from the Q & A’s of the local  NY State Quit site

Q. Does nicotine cause cancer?

A: NO, Tar in cigarette smoke causes cancer. But nicotine is an addictive drug. It is NOT the nicotine
in cigarette smoke that causes cancer. Nicotine may keep you smoking,
but it is the other bad chemicals in cigarettes that make smoking so dangerous.

Q: If nicotine does not cause cancer, what does?

A: The tar and chemicals in the cigarette smoke vapor cause cancer,
not the nicotine.

Q: Why don’t the cigarette companies just take the tar out of the tobacco?

A: Tar provides most of the  cigarette flavor. Less tar, less flavor!

Tar from a year’s worth of cigarettes

Q: Why don’t the cigarette companies just take the nicotine out of the tobacco?

A: You’d stop smoking and they wouldn’t get your money!

Q: Isn’t it better to switch to a low tar, low nicotine cigarettes?

A: No, even though it they may feel better on your chest, chances are you will puff harder and smoke more of each cigarette to get the nicotine.

Q: I have a hard time quitting smoking. Is there a safer way to get nicotine?

A: Yes, you can get clean nicotine in a nicotine patch, gum, Nasal spray, lozenge, or inhaler; these products don’t have tar.

In a 1994 Hearing before the Subcommittee on Health and the Environment, tobacco company executives swore that nicotine is not addictive. They lied.

Q: Won’t I get hooked on nicotine in the patch, gum, nasal spray, lozenge, or inhaler?

A: Most people find it easy to get off nicotine medicines after a few months. Cigarettes get you addicted by delivering nicotine quickly to your brain. Nicotine in smoke enters your lungs as a vapor and reaches your brain in 7 to 10 seconds. That is why most smokers feel satisfied after one or two drags on a cigarette. Products like the nicotine patch, gum, nasal spray, lozenge, or inhaler deliver nicotine slowly. Nicotine gets absorbed through the skin or through the lining of the nose or mouth.

Q: Does nicotine replacement really work, or is it just another way to get money out of smokers?

A: Nothing will work unless you want it to. Nicotine medications can help by dulling your cravings for a cigarette and are proven to increase your chances of quitting smoking.

PLAN TO QUIT SMOKING – WITH LINKS TO HELPFUL SITES

plan-to-quit-smoking

Getting Ready – Time To Stop & Think

You may feel that you’re ready to quit smoking TODAY and you’ve probably been smoking for many years.

Give yourself the best chance to plan your smoking quit in advance – and do it powerfully and once and for all!

Preparing Your Quit Plan

Upsetting your smoking habits is a good preparation for quitting. When you combine this with exercise, dietary change and if needed, temporary medication, your chances of success double! Here are some common habit-breaking tips.

Habit breaking

  • SWITCH – Try changing the brand of cigarettes that you currently smoke before you quit. Smoke brand that you would never smoke.
  • REDUCE - Try cutting out a few of your cigarettes before you quit.
  • DELAY – Delaying a minute or two and the urge will pass.
  • DISTACT – Get busy. Do something. This really helps!

Setting Your Quit Date to Stop Smoking

WRITE IT DOWN YOUR GOAL – Pick a quit date and write it on your calendar. Remember, there is no “perfect” time to quit smoking, but it’s wise to avoid a time of high stress.

PLAN IN ADVANCE – Give yourself 1 to 3 weeks to get ready. This allows time to:

  • Get used to the idea of quitting.
  • Line up family and friends for support.
  • Practice habit breaking.
  • Consider herbal aides and prescriptions as a last resort.

You can do it!

Try the many herbs to help stop smoking. See article by Annie B Bond. Here is a partial list

  • Lobelia – mimics the effects of nicotine; lobelia is the chief ingredient in many stop-smoking remedies.
  • Coltsfoot, horehound, and mullein eliminate tar and other foreign substances from the lungs.
  • Mimosa relieves the headaches and anxiety most smokers experience when quitting.
  • Passion Flower – promotes calmness and relaxation, which will help with the irritability you may experience
  • Peppermint leaf – has relaxation and detoxification powers
  • Ginger root – aids in digestion and relieves the nausea that nicotine withdraw sometimes produces
  • Skullcap – used in the treatment of anxiety and nervous tension
  • Eleuthero Root – combats stress and fatigue and helps boost the immune system
  • Elderberry Flower – protects against inflammation of the upper respiratory tract
  • Echinacea Purpurea – helps stimulate the body’s resistance to infection, disease, fever and blood poisoning
  • Safflower – contains anti-tumor properties

LAST RESORT ONLY – Get stop-smoking medications only as a last resort. Remember chemical drugs have side effects so use them only ….temporarily… to transition:

  • Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) These medicines can help reduce cravings once you quit. For NRT patches, gum and lozenge there is no prescription necessary; NRT Inhaler and Spraywith a prescription.
  • Chantix® is a new non-nicotine containing medication that is available by prescription only. Check with you doctor about whether Chantix® is right for you.
  • Zyban® is a non-nicotine containing medication that is available by prescription only.
Check with your doctor about whether Zyban® is right for you.

Tobacco Trivia

400,000 Amercians der year dead
  • Every ten seconds, somewhere in the world, someone dies of tobacco-related causes. Tobacco kills more Americans each year than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fire and AIDS combined.
  • Tobacco products are the only legal consumer products that are LETHAL when used exactly as the manufacturer intends.
  • Cigarettes are the leading cause of fire deaths in the USA.
  • Each Year, the American Association of Poison Control Centers receives reports of poisoning in young children who eat tobacco products.
  • Smokers pay twice as much for life insurance and will die an average of 13 – 14 years earlier than non-smokers.
  • It costs tobacco companies approximately 5 cents to produce a pack of cigarettes.
Animals suffer from tobacco smoke
  • A study found that dogs in smoking households had a 60 percent greater risk of lung cancer; a different study showed that long-nosed dogs, such as collies or greyhounds, were twice as likely to develop nasal cancer if they lived with smokers.
  • And yet another study found that cats whose owners smoked were three times more likely to develop lymphoma, the most common feline cancer.
Animals suffer from tobacco smoke
  • There are 69 known carcinogens in cigarettes.
  • Tobacco smoke contains at least 4,000 chemicals including: ammonia, cyanide, arsenic, and formaldehyde.
  • Cigarette butts take about 25 years to decompose.

Effects Of Second-Hand Smoke

1 Comment 09 September 2010

effects of second hand smoke

Thousands of chemical compounds are created by burning a cigarette. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanides and ammonia are all present in cigarette smoke. Forty-three known carcinogens are in mainstream smoke, side-stream smoke or both. Most of these ingredients, approved by the government as lobbied by the manufacturers, were never tested by burning them and it is the burning of many of these substances which often changes their properties for the worse. It’s chilling to think about not only how smokers poison themselves, but what others are exposed to by breathing in the secondhand smoke. The next time you’re missing your old buddy, the cigarette, take a good long look at this list and see them for what they are: a delivery system for toxic chemical and carcinogens.

Also known as secondhand smoke, ETS plays a part in more health problems than you might realize. The following facts point out why it is so important to have smoking bans in place. No one should be forced to breathe in air tainted with cigarette smoke.

Secondhand Smoke and Cancer

The U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has classified secondhand smoke as a Group A carcinogen.

Cancers linked to passive smoking include:

Some chemical compounds found in smoke only become carcinogenic after they’ve come into contact with certain enzymes found in many of the tissues of the human body.

The Risks of Secondhand Smoke to a Child

  • Low birth weight for gestational age
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)- children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy have an increased risk of SIDS.
  • The EPA estimates that passive smoking is responsible for between 150,000 and 300,000 of these infections in children under 18 months annually
  • Asthma – According to the EPA, between 200,000 and 1,000,000 kids with asthma have their condition worsened by secondhand smoke every year. Also, passive smoking may also be responsible for thousands of new cases of asthma every year
  • Chronic respiratory symptoms such as cough and wheezing may be attributed to secondhand smoke.
  • Children who breathe in secondhand smoke are more likely to suffer from dental cavities, eye and nose irritation, and irritability
  • Middle ear infections – exposure to ETS causes buildup of fluid in the middle ear, resulting in 700,000 to 1.6 million physician office visits yearly

Secondhand Smoke and Children
Secondhand Smoke at Home Threatens Children

How Secondhand Smoke Can Affect the Heart

  • Heart disease mortality – an estimated 35,000 to 62,000 deaths are caused from heart disease in people who are not current smokers, but who are exposed to ETS
  • Acute and chronic coronary heart disease
  • Passive smoking has been linked to the narrowing of the carotid arteries, which carry blood to the brain
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke hastens hardening of the arteries, a condition known as artherosclerosis
  • Continual exposure to ETS has been shown to nearly double the chance of heart attack

Secondhand Smoke – Worse Than We Thought

Secondhand smoke is serious business, and should be a concern for anyone who breathes it in. Non-smokers inhaling secondhand smoke share some of the health risks smokers face. But smokers do face the worst of it – the risks of smoking are compounded by breathing cigarette smoke in for a second time.

Don’t underestimate the dangers of  ETS. While secondhand smoke may not kill as many people as smoking does, it is toxic and claims thousands of lives every year around the world.

Behind Closed Doors – What Tobacco Companies Hide From You

No Comments 08 September 2010

tobacco kills

What are tobacco companies telling us?

* Tobacco use is safe, helps one lose weight, and  isn’t dangerous

* Nicotine isn’t addictive

* Environmental tobacco smoke isn’t dangerous.

* They don’t want kids to smoke

What do their secret documents say?

* Tobacco brutally kills. It kills more Americans each year than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fire and AIDS combined. Every ten seconds, somewhere in the world, someone dies of tobacco-related causes.

* They hired scientists to discover a safe cigarette, but none could be developed.

* They’ve known that nicotine is a drug and that it’s addictive. The companies call cigarettes an ideal drug delivery system because they are convenient, portable, and are self administered.

* The level of nicotine in tobacco products is controlled by the companies to keep their customers addicted.

* Privately, they have conducted research on Environmental Tobacco Smoke which showed that it’s dangerous.

* They want and need children to replace the 5,000 customers who die and quit smoking every year.

Here are some quotes from the tobacco industry that became public as a result of Tobacco Trials. This is what the tobacco industry says “BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.”

The tobacco industry actively markets tobacco to teens.

* “They got lips? We want them.”

(Reply of an RJ Reynolds representative when asked the age of the kids they were targeting.)

* “The desire to quit seems to come earlier now than before, even prior to the end of high school…attempts to quit are very painful, they thought they could quit easily, but they soon learn…”they have become SLAVES to their cigarettes. (Imperial Tobacco)

* A memo from Brown & Williamson consultants recommended the company use a “sweet flavor cigarette… It’s a well known fact that teenagers like sweet products. Honey might be considered.” (B&W 1972, from John Schwartz, Documents Indicate Strategy of Targeting Teen Smokers, Washington Post, February 5, 1998, p A3)

* David Goerlitz, the former Winston Man, asked RJ Reynolds executives, “Don’t any of you smoke?” One executive answered, “Are you kidding” We reserve that right for the poor, the young, the black, and the stupid.” (As quoted in a New York Times editorial by Bob Hebert, Nov. 1993)

* “We wanted to get into that market, (youth market) and used the promotional items, tee shirts, baseball caps, and one hot item were lighters, knowing full well the people were giving these away to was kids half the time.” (Salesman for RJR) (Hilts.97)

* Marlboro dominates in the 17 and younger age category, capturing over 50 percent of the market.” (1979 Philip Morris memo)

* They represent tomorrow’s cigarette business…As this 14-24 age group matures, they will account for a key share of the total cigarette volume-for at least the nest 25 years.”(RJR’s marketing plan presented to the company’s board of directors in 1974.

* The report on Teenage Smokers (14-17) indicates that RJR continues to gradually decline and between the spring and fall 1979 periods, RJR’s total share declined from 21.3 to 19.9. Hopefully, our various planned activities that will be implement this fall will aid in some way in reducing or correcting these trends.” (RJR interoffice correspondence July 22, 1980)

* “Kool has shown little or no growth in share of users in the 26 (plus) age group… Growth is from 16-15 year olds. At the present rate, a smoker in the 16-25 year age group will soon be three times as important to Kool as a tprospect in any other broad age category.” (1973 Brown and Williamson memo)

* “Young blacks have found their thing. It’s menthol in general and KOOL in particular.”(l974 Philip Morris marketing plan)

* A 1992 memo form Imperial Tobacco’s “Project 16″ notes how many young people who begin smoking “in the 14-16 age range” doubt they will become addicted to cigarettes. The memo continues, “Once addiction does take place, it becomes necessary for the smoker to make peace with the accepted hazards….(from John Schwartz, Documents Indicate Strategy of Targeting Teen Smokers, Washington Post, February 5, 1998, pA3)

The tobacco industry has known that tobacco kills

* “Studies of clinical data tend to confirm the relationship between heavy and prolonged tobacco smoking and incidence of cancer of the lung.” (RJ Reynolds, 1953) “There are biologically active materials present in cigarette smoking. These are: • cancer causing • cancer promoting • poisonous • stimulating (A consulting firm, working for the US Liggett Company reviewed the results of seven year’s research work. 1961)

They’ve know nicotine is addictive

More than twenty Surgeon General Reports over a span of more than twenty-five years have summarized tens of thousands of studies that show tobacco use is deadly.

The tobacco industry doesn’t want to admit that nicotine is a drug because it’s afraid that The Food and Drug Administration, a governmental agency, will be able to regulate cigarettes. They fear that the FDA may force them to lower the amount of nicotine, or worse yet, make them remove it. If this happened, the tobacco industry would no longer have a product that people would buy. They know that a cigarette is nothing more than a little white package that holds nicotine. Without the nicotine no one would buy the package.

This is what they’ve said about Nicotine “Behind Closed Doors.”

* “Very few customers are aware of the effects of nicotine, i.e. its addictive nature and that nicotine is a poison.” (1979 B&W document)

* “Nicotine is the addicting agent in cigarettes.” (1982 B&W Tobacco Company document on getting smokers to switch brands.)

* “Ammonia, when added to tobacco reacts with nicotine and can act as an impact booster (makes nicotine more powerful).”( Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation)

* “Nicotine is addictive. We are, then, in the business of selling nicotine, an addictive drug.” (B&W, 1963)

* “Think of a cigarette as a dispenser for a dose unit of nicotine….” (Philip Morris, 1971)

* We are searching explicitly for a socially acceptable addictive product…The essential constituent is most likely to be nicotine or a direct substitute for it.” (August 1979 memo by BAT on the search for a potential replacement for cigarettes)

* Taken together, the evidence suggests that self-administration of nicotine may be the primary motivation for smoking.” (1984 BAT document describing nicotine’s addictive qualities in scientific detail)

Tobacco Companies Know Tobacco is a Drug

* BAT should learn to look at itself as a drug company rather than as a tobacco company.” (April 1980 memo by a team of BAT scientists

* “Do we really want to tout cigarette smoke as a drug” It is, or course.” (February 1969 memo from a Philip Morris researcher)

* “Classification of tobacco as a drug should be avoided at all costs.” (1974 British American Tobacco memo).

Keep Kids From Smoking?

Tobacco companies like Philip Morris want to change their image. They’d like us to believe they are doing everything they can to keep kids from smoking. That’s like saying they want to put themselves out of business. The truth is:

The amount spent on promotions and marketing of cigarettes vastly exceeded what was spent on any of these (Tobacco Institute youth) programs.” (Michael Ciresi, Attorney for the State of Minnesota, summarizing in court information showing that the three largest cigarette manufacturers spent $40.6 million on youth prevention programs from 1938 to 1994 or less than 2 tenths of 1% of the @26.9 billion spent on cigarette advertising, marketing and promotion during the same period.)

Many of these quotes were compiled by the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office.

Kick The Costly, Harmful Smoking Habit

Costly Smoking Habit

It’s on your mind at least 20 times a day or more. It takes up your work breaks, It comes between each drink at the bar. It’s always your favorite companion for the car ride, It’s there for you every time you find yourself in a stressful situation. Then…when it’s not within your reach, and inaccessible or you are trying to kick it to the curb, it arouses all kinds of feelings-frustration, anxiety, headaches,  stomach aches, anger, some people even get themselves into a rage!

At this point, you may have guessed  I am talking about the good ol’ cigarette that approximately 1.3 billion people across the globe are smoking at least 1-2 packs of every single day.

Now,  if you think about the tobacco companies for a moment, guess how much money they are raking in on you if you smoke at least one pack per day, seven days a week? The average cost in the United States for a pack of cigarettes is about $6. New Yorkers actually have to pay almost $10 a pack! So if we multiply 1 pack of 20 single cigarettes, by $6, then multiply that by 7, what do you get?  $42  a week. If you smoke 2 or more packs, we could be talking up to $100 a week.  In New York, that would be about $70-150 a week alone! That is a lot of cash that in today’s economy could be well spent on food, clothing, and other much necessities.

So I present this article to you as a wake up call for two reasons. The first…what are you inhaling when you take a drag off a cigarette, the severe damage is it doing to your body and brain, and what the tobacco company’s hidden agenda’s really are. Read closely and carefully, if you’ve never learned about this, this my shock and appall you.

Harmful Smoking Habit

According to Quitsmokingsupport.com:

Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. These include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT.

Nicotine is highly addictive. Smoke containing nicotine is inhaled into the lungs, and the nicotine reaches your brain in just six seconds. While not as serious as heroin addiction, addiction to nicotine also poses very serious health risks in the long run.

Nicotine in small doses acts as a stimulant to the brain. In large doses, it’s a depressant, inhibiting the flow of signals between nerve cells. In even larger doses, it’s a lethal poison, affecting the heart, blood vessels, and hormones. Nicotine in the bloodstream acts to make the smoker feel calm.

As a cigarette is smoked, the amount of tar inhaled into the lungs increases, and the last puff contains more than twice as much tar as the first puff. Carbon monoxide makes it harder for red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. Tar is a mixture of substances that together form a sticky mass in the lungs.

Most of the chemicals inhaled in cigarette smoke stay in the lungs. The more you inhale, the better it feels—and the greater the damage to your lungs. Ask anyone with a medical lab technology degree. They will be able to tell you what damage smoking does to the lungs.”

Cigarette Maker Lists Ingredients

For the first time, an American tobacco company has begun listing long-secret ingredients contained in its cigarettes directly on the label. Liggett Group Inc. introduced cartons that list the ingredients in its L&M cigarettes, including molasses, phenylacetic acid and the oil of the East Indian mint called patchouli. The move comes as the state of Massachusetts is trying to compel disclosure of all ingredients by all cigarette makers, an effort that other major tobacco companies are fighting.

Liggett, which broke with the industry by signing the first settlements ever with states and private attorneys suing it, supports the Massachusetts effort as well. “Liggett believes that its adult consumers have a right to full disclosure,” Liggett head Bennett S. LeBow said in a statement. Along with blended tobacco and water, the 26-item L&M list includes high fructose corn syrup, sugar, natural and artificial licorice flavor, menthol, artificial milk chocolate and natural chocolate flavor, valerian root extract, molasses and vanilla extracts, and cedarwood oil. Less familiar additives include glycerol, propylene glycol, isovaleric acid, hexanoic acid and 3-methylpentanoic acid.

Some 600 ingredients are used in American cigarettes, but a Liggett spokesman said the L&M statement was a “quite exhaustive list” of every ingredient used in that brand.

The companies have provided lists of ingredients to the federal Department of Health and Human Services for more than a decade, but government officials are legally not allowed to release the information. The industry also presented a composite list of 599 additives to congressional investigators in 1994, but that was never officially made public.

David Remes, an attorney who represents the four other tobacco companies challenging the state of Massachusetts, said the case comes down to the industry’s right to protect its trade secrets.

Cigarette flavors have gone through many changes since cigarettes were first made. Initially, cigarettes were unfiltered, allowing the full “flavor” of the tar to come through. As the public became concerned about the health effects of smoking, filters were added. While this helped alleviate the public’s fears, the result was a cigarette that tasted too bitter.

Filters Don’t Work

Filters do not remove enough tar to make cigarettes less dangerous. They are just a marketing ploy to trick you into thinking you are smoking a safer cigarette.

The solution to the bitter-tasting cigarette was easy — have some chemists add taste-improving chemicals to the tobacco. Unfortunately, some of these chemicals also cause cancer.

But not all of the chemicals in your cigarettes are there for taste enhancement. For example, a chemical very similar to rocket fuel helps keep the tip of the cigarette burning at an extremely hot temperature. This allows the nicotine in tobacco to turn into a vapor so your lungs can absorb it more easily.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner? Most people prefer to use ammonia for things such as cleaning windows and toilet bowls. You may be surprised to learn that the tobacco industry has found some additional uses for this household product. By adding ammonia to your cigarettes, nicotine in its vapor form can be absorbed through your lungs more quickly. This, in turn, means your brain can get a higher dose of nicotine with each puff.

The complete list of chemicals added to your cigarettes is too long to list here. Here are some examples that will surprise you:

  • Fungicides and pesticides — Cause many types of cancers and birth defects.
  • Cadmium — Linked to lung and prostate cancer.
  • Benzene — Linked to leukemia.
  • Formaldehyde — Linked to lung cancer.
  • Nickel — Causes increased susceptibility to lung infections.

If you are angry that so many things have been added to the cigarettes you enjoy so much, you should be. Many of these chemicals were added to make you better able to tolerate toxic amounts of cigarette smoke. They were added without regard to your health and with the intent to keep you addicted. As the tobacco industry saying goes, “An addicted customer is a customer for life, no matter how short that life is.”

Make sure that you have the last laugh. Regardless of the countless chemicals in your cigarettes, quitting is always your option.

Perhaps this list of ingredients that are found in cigarettes is enough to make you want to quit smoking for good!

There are more than 4,000 ingredients in a cigarette and its smoke other than tobacco. Common additives include yeast, wine, caffeine, beeswax and chocolate. Here are some other ingredients:

Ammonia: Household cleaner
Angelica root extract: Known to cause cancer in animals
Arsenic: Used in rat poisons
Benzene: Used in making dyes, synthetic rubber
Butane: Gas; used in lighter fluid
Carbon monoxide: Poisonous gas
Cadmium: Used in batteries
Cyanide: Deadly poison
DDT: A banned insecticide
Ethyl Furoate: Causes liver damage in animals
Lead: Poisonous in high doses
Formaldehiyde: Used to preserve dead specimens
Methoprene: Insecticide
Megastigmatrienone: Chemical naturally found in grapefruit juice
Maltitol: Sweetener for diabetics
Napthalene: Ingredient in mothballs
Methyl isocyanate: Its accidental release killed 2000 people in Bhopal, India in 1984
Polonium: Cancer-causing radioactive element

Now, if this information alone didn’t make you want to vomit, flip out in a down right outrage, make you want to quit immediately, or give you extreme anxiety about the possibilities of the horrible damage you are doing to your body and risking a painful, agonizing death, then those dirty tobacco corporations have got you right where they want you – close to a coffin while they’re throwing your money around their offices, laughing and popping bottles of Champaign.

We’ll get back to that little piece on the industry later. Here from the Tri County Cessation Center

Is some more gruesome information to hopefully get that brain to a place of acceptance.

Final Thoughts – They Don’t Care!

Now this is a really good amount of information to get you thinking, and I feel comfortable enough to add in my final thoughts on cigarettes. The Tobacco Industries- another group of billionaire corporations who do not give a damn what happens to you, as long as your hard earned cash gets them sitting on some island flown to by their own private jet, while you are hooked up to a respirator, have various cancers or diseases, have family members lost due to smoking related illnesses, coughing up black and grey mucus, and then heading down to western medicine for some other awesome form of cigarettes known as the patch or some fluoridated toxic medication that will supposedly help you quit…when really you’ll be dead soon enough…. and believe me, the companies know all about you and your families, your children, your babies, and what you are going through.

They are aware of the campaign ads against them and the commercials (Such as TheTruth.com) dedicated to getting this information out there. However, thanks to you, these companies just have billions and billions to spend on ads and other trickery to keep you hooked.

So the only way to stop this is to stop smoking, yourself and encourage and support others to do the same. There are so many organization and support groups out there waiting to take your hand and guide you, it’s just a matter of how important it is to you to save your own life, your family, your friends, people, animals, every living being on the earth.

Look inside yourself for a moment and think. How much will power do you have? How much is  your life and all other living beings lives worth to you? Are you going to let capitalism and these dirty corporations control your life and trick you over 20 to 40 times per day?  I leave you with hope and blessing that you can find the power within your true self to kick this habit, and be part of the revolution.

Quotes

I also, leave you with some disturbing quotes from tobacco industries courtesy of Teens Against Tobacco (http://www.nbatc.ca/tatu/tobacco_industry_quotes.shtml)
“We don’t smoke that s**t, we just sell it. We reserve that right for the young, the poor, the black and the stupid.”

R.J. Reynolds, as quoted in The Times of London, 02 August 1992
“If you are really and truly not going to sell to children, you are going to be out of business in 30 years.”

Bennett LeBow, CEO of Brook Group Ltd. makers of Lark and L&M cigarettes
“We have been asked by our client to come up with a package design… a design that’s attractive to kids.”

Letter from Lorillard’s (Newports) ad agency, 1970

“We were targeting kids, and I said at the time it was unethical and maybe illegal. But I was told it was just company policy.”

So says Terrence Sullivan, a sales representative for R.J. Reynolds. Sullivan also remembers someone asking who exactly were the young people that R.J. Reynolds was targeting – junior high school kids or even younger?  The reply was:

“They got lips? We want them.”

- R.J. Reynolds, 1990 Quoted in P.J. Hilt’s Smokescreen – The Truth Behind the Tobacco Industry Cover-up, 1996 . This quote Taken from “Behind Closed Doors” (http://www.costkids.org/targetingkids/behindcloseddoors.htm)

“The desire to quit seems to come earlier now than before, even prior to the end of high school…attempts to quit are very painful, they thought they could quit easily, but they soon learn…they have become SLAVES to their cigarettes.” (Imperial Tobacco)

_________________________

There you have it.

You are not a free human being.

You are a SLAVE to the tobacco Industries.

So, folks…I encourage you in your free time to take a good hard look at this vital information and start to think about ways to quit the habit. Not just for your personal health, but for the Love and Consciousness of every living being on this planet, especially young children and babies. You can do this. Tobacco industries stole your power, but you will take it back. and you will quit, and you will be a part of our beautiful love and natural health revolution!!! Good Luck and Blessing

PS:  I don’t even know what 90 % of the chemicals listed as cigarette ingredients really are. Ever hear the phrase “If you don’t know what it is, don’t eat it?” referring to the ingredients in foods? That applies here almost a trillion times more. It’s time to do some research, and really start to feel some serious fear and panic about what you are doing to yourself. this is one of the worst, most poisonous things you can do to yourself and all those around you when you blow out those poisons in others faces where ever you may be. This is known as second-hand smoke and now there’s part three-third hand smoke – the chemicals you have left behind in the rooms you smoked in). I mean, This is pretty serious, You are not only responsible for the possible disease and death of yourself, but to hundreds of others, which include young innocent children and infants who haven’t even the chance to start enjoying life yet.

I don’t even know what 90 % of those chemicals are. Ever hear the phrase “If you don’t know what it is, don’t eat it?” referring to the ingredients in foods? That applies here almost a trillion times more. It’s time to do some research, and really start to feel some serious fear and panic about what you are doing to yourself. this is one of the worst, most poisonous things you can do to yourself and all those around you when you blow out those poisons in others faces where ever you may be.(This is known as second-hand smoke) and now there’s part three- Third hand smoke-the chemicals you have left behind in the rooms you smoked in). I mean, This is pretty serious, You are not only responsible for the possible disease and death of yourself, but to hundreds of others, which include young innocent children and infants who haven’t even the chance to start enjoying life yet.

About.Com Smoking Cessation’s article written by Terry Martin, explains the dangers of second and even third hand smoke, with several links you can take upon yourself to look into.

Secondhand smoke is a toxic cocktail consisting of poisons and carcinogens. There are over 4000 chemical compounds in secondhand smoke; 200 of which are known to be poisonous, and upwards of 60 have been identified as carcinogens.

When a cigarette is smoked, about half of the smoke is inhaled / exhaled (mainstream smoke) by the smoker and the other half floats around in the air (sidestream smoke). The combination of mainstream and sidestream smoke makes up environmental tobacco smoke (ETS

).

What’s in a Cigarette?

by K. H. Ginzel, M.D.

Nicotine in a Cigarette

Probing into what makes a cigarette so irresistible, we find that much of the recent research corroborates earlier claims: It is for the nicotine in tobacco that the smoker smokes, the chewer chews, and the dipper dips. Hence, nicotine is in a cigarette.

Tar in a Cigarette

Pollution in a Cigarette

Disease in a Cigarette

The witch’s brew of poisons invades the organs and tissues of smokers and nonsmokers, adults and children, born as well as unborn, and causes cancer, emphysema, heart disease, fetal growth retardation and other problems during pregnancy. The harm inflicted by all other addictions combined pales in comparison. Smoking-related illness, for example, claims in a few days as many victims as cocaine does in a whole year. Hence, disease is in a cigarette.

Cancer in a Cigarette

The irony is that many of the poisons found in cigarette smoke are subject to strict regulation by federal laws which, on the other hand, specifically exempt tobacco products. “Acceptable Daily Intake,” ADI, is the amount of a chemical an individual can be exposed to for an extended period without apparent detriment to health.

In addition, there is the chemical burden from side stream smoke, afflicting smokers and non-smokers alike.

Hypocrisy in a Cigarette

Death in a Cigarette

But there is still more in a cigarette than addiction, poison, pollution, disease, and hypocrisy. A half century of aggressive promotion and sophisticated advertising that featured alluring role models from theater, film and sport, has invested the cigarette with an enticing imagery.

It is imagery which captivates and seduces a growing youngster.

Coffee Enemas

How To Prepare Coffee Enemas

No Comments 09 August 2010

Coffee-enema
By Ron Seely

Early in my diagnosis I used organic coffee enemas made with distilled water to detox my liver – sometimes up to four and five times a day as recommended for cancer patients by Max Gerson, M.D. founder of the Gerson Institute and Gerson Diet Therapy.  (See 101-103 of An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide to Cancer.)

Here’s a good article about coffee enemas I found on the Internet:

http://www.drlwilson.com/detox_protocols.htm

Why in the world would someone use coffee in an enema?  That is the question I asked when my health practitioner suggested I do coffee enemas.  Yet when I got over my initial resistance, I quickly saw the benefits of coffee enemas. I have since recommended them to over a thousand patients.  Many have told me how wonderful they are.  Several said coffee enemas saved their lives.  Indeed, they are most helpful for many types of conditions.  The procedure is also inexpensive and can be done at home without special equipment.

Enemas are an ancient form of hydrotherapy. They have been used for hundreds of years for mechanically cleansing the colon.  Enemas and colonic irrigation used to be routine procedures in hospitals. There are many types of enemas used for varying purposes.

Coffee enemas were first popularized by Max Gerson, MD, author of A Cancer Therapy – Results of 50 Cases.  Dr. Gerson pioneered nutritional therapy for cancer and other diseases with excellent results.  His therapy combined coffee enemas with a special diet, juices and other supplements.  The enemas were an integral part of the therapy.

The major benefit of the coffee enema, he said, is to enhance elimination of toxins through the liver.  Indeed, endoscopic studies confirm they increase bile output.  A patient was given a coffee enema while an endoscope monitored the entrance to the common bile duct.  Within minutes of administering the enema, bile flow increased. Increased bile flow also alkalinizes the small intestine and promotes improved digestion.  Coffee also acts as an astringent in the large intestine, helping clean the colon walls.

A common contributor to ill health is the production and absorption of toxins within the small and large intestines.  If food is not digested properly, sugars ferment and protein putrefies or rots.  Both processes generate toxic chemicals which are then absorbed into the liver.  The coffee enema enhances digestion by increasing bile flow and removes toxins in the large intestine so they will not be absorbed.  Most people with health complaints suffer from impaired digestion and production of toxic substances in the intestines.

Coffee enemas are particularly helpful for slow oxidizers.  Their liver activity is more sluggish and digestion is usually impaired.  Fast oxidizers may have more difficulty retaining the enema.  The procedure described below is really a coffee implant rather than an enema, because it involves only two to three cups of water. Using a quart of water may be more difficult to retain for some individuals.

However, the use of a quart of water, and making sure the water reaches most of the large intestine, is more helpful for cleansing the colon of accumulated waste material.  If one suspects severe bowel toxicity or in cases of serious illness, quart enemas are preferable, at least to start with.

Dr. Gerson recommended the coffee enema up to 6 times daily for severely ill cancer patients.  His patients continued them for up to several years with no ill effects.  I usually suggest one enema per day to assist detoxification or to enhance liver activity. Two enemas daily may be taken during a healing reaction if needed.  For those who are very ill, several a day may are best for at least several months. For best results, a program of coffee enemas should be carried on for at least a month. They should not be needed for more than two or three years, although many people have continued to take them for a number of years without problems.
The best time to take the enema is after a normal movement.  One will get a slight rush from the caffeine, but it is not like drinking coffee, which I do not recommend.  Coffee enemas taken in the evening may interfere with sleep.

If performed properly, coffee implants do not cause habituation, constipation or any rectal problems.  In over 23 years of practice, I have not seen important negative effects of coffee enemas in those who need them.  Difficulties occasionally arise if one has hemorrhoids.  In these cases, extra care is needed in inserting the enema tip.  Some people with hemorrhoids find the enemas irritating.

A small number of people are unable to retain even a cup of water for the required 15 minutes.  One can start with less coffee or less water in these cases.  There seems to be no harm if one wishes to retain the enema longer than 15 minutes. While enemas may seem uncomfortable, many clients report the procedure is so helpful they soon forget the inconvenience.

Step 1. Materials

* Buy a 2-quart enema bag with a clamp. This is sold at drug stores. The enema/douche bag combination is easier to use.

* Buy any brand of regular coffee – regular grind or flaked, non-instant and not decaffeinated, or grind your own coffee. Organically grown coffee is best, though any coffee will do.  Organic coffee is available at natural food stores. Store opened coffee containers in the freezer for maximum freshness.

Step 2. Preparation of coffee

There are two methods. The first is best.

* Place 2 to 3 cups of purified water and two to three tablespoons of coffee in a saucepan and bring to a boil (or use a coffee maker).

* Let it boil 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and allow it to cool. One or two ice cubes may be added to speed the cooling process.  You may make a larger quantity and use it for several enemas.

* Wait until the water is comfortable to the touch.  If the water is too hot or too cold, retaining the enema will be more difficult.  Strain the liquid through a fine strainer or coffee filter paper into a clean enema bag.  Screw on the top of the enema bag.  The enema is now ready.

The alternative non-boil method:

* Place 1 cup of ground coffee in a container with 2 cups of water. Stir the mixture thoroughly and allow it to soak overnight. (You may make a larger quantity if desired.)

* In the morning, filter the liquid through coffee filter paper or a fine strainer. Place in a jar for storage in the refrigerator.

* To prepare an enema, pour 2 cups of purified water into the enema bag. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of the coffee liquid from the jar.

Step 3. Preparing to take the coffee enema

* Be sure the plastic hose is pushed or fastened well onto the enema bag and the thin enema tip is attached to the other end.

* Remove any air from the enema tube the following way.  Grasp but do not close the clamp on the hose.  Place the tip in the sink.  Hold up the enema bag above the tip until the water begins to flow out. Then close the clamp. This expels any air in the tube.

* Lubricate the enema tip with a small amount of soap or oil. (Too much lubrication will cause the tip to fall out of the rectum, creating a mess!).

Step 4. Taking the coffee enema

* The position preferred by most people is lying on one’s back on a towel, on the bathroom floor or in the bath tub.

* With the clamp closed, place the enema bag on the floor next to you, or hang the bag about one foot above your abdomen.

* Insert the tip gently and slowly.  Move it around until it goes all the way in.

* Open the clamp and hold the enema bag about one foot above the abdomen. The water may take a few seconds to begin flowing.  If the water does not flow, you may gently squeeze the bag.  If you develop a cramp, close the hose clamp, turn from side to side and take a few deep breaths. The cramp will usually pass quickly.

* When all the liquid is inside, the bag will become flat.  Close the clamp. You can leave the tube inserted, or remove it slowly.

* RETAIN THE ENEMA FOR 15 MINUTES.  See below if you have difficulties with this.  You may remain lying on the floor. Use the time to read a book, meditate, etc.  Some people are able to get up and go lie on a towel in bed, instead of on the floor.  Walking around the house with the coffee inside is not recommended.

Step 5. Finishing up

* After 15 minutes or so, go to the toilet and empty out the water. It is okay if some water remains inside.  If water remains inside often, you are dehydrated.

* Wash the enema bag and tube thoroughly with soap and water.

Hints regarding enemas:

* If possible, do the enema after a bowel movement to make it easier to retain the coffee. If this is not possible, take a plain water enema first if needed, to clean out the colon.

* If intestinal gas is a problem, some exercise before the enema may eliminate the gas.

* It is not essential but is helpful if the water fills the entire colon. You can assist by first lying on your right side for 5 minutes, then on your back for 5 minutes, and then on your left side for 5 minutes.

* If water will not flow around the entire colon, you may gently massage your abdomen. Some people attach a 30-inch colon tube to the tip of the enema tube, and insert the tube so the water will reach the right side of the colon.

* If the coffee enema makes you jittery, reduce the amount of coffee.

* The coffee enema may lower your blood sugar. If so, eat something just before or after taking the enema.

If you have trouble holding the coffee enema, here are suggestions.

1) Be patient.  Practice makes perfect.
2) The water may be too hot or too cold.  Be sure the water temperature is comfortable.
3) It may help to place a small pillow or rolled up towel under your buttocks so the water flows down hill into your colon.
4) If trouble continues, try reducing the amount of coffee or add 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses to the water.

Drugs Contaminate Our Drinking Water

Experts Are Worried As Traces Of Common Medicines Are Found In Water Supplies.
Wisconsin State Journal : FRONT : A1 Sunday, August 29, 2004

Before you read any more of this story, go to your kitchen sink and draw a glass of water. Hold it up to the light and take a good look.

Take a sip.

And think about this. Researchers are finding that our drinking water may contain small amounts of the many drugs that line the shelves of most of our medicine cabinets.

In addition to that refreshing sip of water, you may be ingesting everything from the estrogen used in birth control pills to antibiotics and anti-depressants.

If you find that thought unsettling, you’re not alone. Agencies such as the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are investing millions of dollars in research aimed at measuring the levels of pharmaceuticals in our water supplies.

And those studies are turning up surprising levels of the chemical substances in lakes and streams, in the treated water coming from sewage treatment plants and, most disturbing, in the aquifers from which we draw our drinking water.

It’s not somebody else’s problem, either. Research has turned up pharmaceuticals in surface water, as well as in water coming from septic systems, right here in Dane County, according to Ken Bradbury, a hydrogeologist with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey who is studying the problem locally.

“It’s troubling,” said Bradbury. “It’s troubling that we may be drinking trace amounts of things we haven’t thought about as being there. We don’t know the health effects and we’re not doing enough monitoring to know what the levels are.”

Researchers are just beginning to look at the potential impact of such substances on our health.

There are numerous concerns. Some fear, for example, that exposure to antibiotics will worsen an already existing problem — the growing resistance of bacterial pathogens to antibiotics that are overused.

And studies of fish and other aquatic wildlife exposed to estrogen have turned up numerous problems — such as hermaphroditic fish downstream of sewage treatment plants in the United Kingdom.

Such studies have led some researchers to suggest that declining sperm counts as well as increasing rates of breast, prostate and testicular cancers in humans may be related to estrogenic compounds in the environment.

Henry Anderson, chief medical officer in the state’s Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health, said much of the concern about potential health impacts stems from the nature of the drugs themselves.

“These are drugs that are designed to impact people,” Anderson said.

Such contaminants, considered one of the hottest emerging issues in environmental health, have already been tagged with an acronym. They’re called pharmaceuticals and personal care products, or PPCPs.

They come from a number of sources. Unwanted medications are frequently flushed down the toilet or washed down the sink. We all excrete ingested drugs every time we use the bathroom. When we wash our hands with antibiotic soap, we send antibiotics down the drain and into the waste stream. Farms where antibiotics are used to stimulate animal growth are also a source of contamination.

Lack of research makes it difficult to estimate the amounts of PPCPs entering our waters. Generally, drugs are showing up in much lower concentrations than better studied contaminants such as nitrates.

K.G. Karthikeyan is a UW-Madison faculty member in the Biological Systems Engineering Department who is researching the presence of drugs in water supplies. He pointed out that in both his studies and others, such substances are detected in parts per billion as opposed to contaminants such as nitrates, which are measured in parts per million.

But the sheer volume of pharmaceuticals used in this country and around the world leads most to suspect that the concentrations of drugs in our waters will only increase. Worldwide sales of pharmaceuticals is approaching $500 billion. Last year, people spent $26 billion on cholesterol and triglyceride reducers alone, an increase of 14 percent from 2002, making it the largest selling class of drugs, just ahead of ulcer medications and antidepressants.

That these drugs were making their way into our water first became apparent in Europe. About 10 years ago, environmental scientists found clofibric acid, a cholesterol-lowering drug, in ground water beneath a German sewage treatment plant.

In this country, the first comprehensive survey of PPCPs in the environment was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, which analyzed water samples from 139 streams across 30 states in 1999 and 2000. The streams were all downstream of crowded urban areas and large livestock farms. Pharmaceuticals and hormones were found in 80 percent of the streams sampled.

Since then, other tests have revealed extensive contamination of both ground and surface waters by pharmaceuticals. In short, everywhere researchers have looked, they have found the substances.

Scientists with the state Laboratory of Hygiene tested 105 surface and ground-water samples from around the country and found that 64 contained estrogenic compounds, although at low concentrations.

Researchers turned up more contamination in surface waters than in ground water, but reported that they were surprised to find that 42 percent of the ground-water samples tested were tainted with estrogen.

In their report, the scientists called that finding “striking” and concluded that “while the levels were generally lower than the surface water supplies, the fact that there were detections at all should serve as a heads-up.”

Bill Sonzogni, a researcher at the laboratory who supervised the research, said that while such research is in its earliest stages, the findings are enough to merit more study.

“I don’t think it’s a health hazard at this point,” Sonzogni said. “But it is something that needs looked at more . . . I think there certainly is concern at this point.”

In his studies, UW-Madison scientist Karthikeyan, working with a grant from the DNR, sampled waters for antibiotics at several treatment plants in Wisconsin, including Green Bay, Oshkosh, Lake Geneva, Barron-Cameron, Hayward, and Spooner.

At every site, according to his preliminary findings, antibiotics were detected in samples from waters both before and after treatment. At two plants, those in Lake Geneva and Spooner, antibiotics were found in adjacent ground-water monitoring wells.

Bradbury, with the Wisconsin Geological Survey, has been studying water in a new Sun Prairie subdivision that relies on septic systems to treat wastes. He and other researchers have detected ibuprofen, as well as estrogenic compounds, in water from the septic systems. Although ground water in the subdivision has been tested, no pharmaceuticals were discovered, Bradbury added.

All of this science has lots of implications, according to Anderson, for regulators such as the EPA as well as for the operators of treatment plants.

The problem for sewage treatment plants is that traditional methods of treating waste do not eliminate many of the pharmaceuticals or hormones.

Paul Nehm, director of operations and maintenance for the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District, said tests have shown the presence of very low levels of pharmaceuticals in water both before and after treatment at the plant. But levels are considerably lower in water after treatment, he added, leading him to believe that processes used at the plant are filtering out some of the substances.

In research released last week, UW-Madison environmental chemist Joel Pedersen reported that studies of three California treatment plants showed traditional methods of treating waste weren’t as effective at filtering pharmaceuticals. Two of the plants studied used advanced treatments, such as reverse osmosis in which water is forced through a membrane that blocks passage of foreign molecules.

Of 19 contaminants studied, the traditional plant eliminated only five. Studies of the more advanced plants, however, showed one eliminated 16 and another eliminated 12 of the pharmaceutical and hormonal compounds.

Such science, according to Wisconsin’s Anderson, will eventually be important in deciding whether to require more treatment of waste water. As important, he added, are studies such as Bradbury’s of private septic systems which are even less effective at filtering drug wastes.

Anderson, at least, hasn’t missed the irony of the very drugs we use to try and improve our health coming back in our drinking water to potentially cause new health problems. And he points out that some researchers have actually raised the possibility that some of the drugs finding their way into our water supplies might be beneficial for us. Maybe some who are accidentally ingesting cholesterol-lowering drugs are better off, Anderson said.

But, mostly, scientists say that at this point the things we don’t know about drugs in our water far outnumber those things we do know.

“There are lots of questions,” concluded Karthikeyan.

10 SIMPLE DAILY & BEST HEALTH HABITS

No Comments 05 August 2010

10-simple-and-best-health-habits

If you want to follow alternative healing ways (avoiding at the same time drugs, surgery and radiation), here are some very simple preventive habits to follow. Basically you want the best of positive life forces to come into your body, the negative forces to leave, and both those process require keeping things moving, circulating, or alive. In between we need rest for both mind and body.

I – Start With A Good Night’s Sleep

It is really best to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Research shows you will function better the next day and your health testing parameters, like blood sugar levels, will be relatively superior.

II – Have A “Light” Cleansing & Nourishing Breakfast

During sleep, your digestive and detox systems rest to revitalize. Don’t burden them immediately with a morning heavy meal. Leave that for a little later, especially at noon time when your digestive juices are strongest. I recommend first a glass of water and then some fresh, raw citric drink to help clear the digestive tract further as you start the day. Alternatively you can eat a high-water content fruit salad, or make a raw veggie juice or blend in the morning. Thinking a “light” breakfast doesn’t necessarily mean it lacks nutrient density. Thus veer more toward what is liquid, liquified, and has a high water-content. If you’re an athlete spike the breakfast with more carbs. Experiment and gauge the results.

III – Consider Quality Supplements

I prefer the powdery kind of supplements that are more easily absorbed when dissolved in water or juice. Thus I like to put my favorite protein, vitamin, mineral & green powders into some kind of a drink, blend or soup.

IV -Avoid Sugars

Don’t buy or add refined sugars to your meals. Try stevia for a substitute. A brute fact is that over a 100 million Americans are overweight and have elevated blood sugar levels.  They are generally hooked on sugar-filled soft-drinks, candies and snacks. Elevated blood sugar levels are the number one precursor and predictor of serious ailments like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

V -Hydrate

Bath, shower or otherwise cleanse at least twice a day. Also drink approximately half as many ounces of purified water as you weigh in pounds each day. So if you weigh 200 lbs, drink about 6 full 16 ounces glasses of water per day. Drink more if you are sweating a great deal due to exercise or being out in the hot sun.

VI – More Whole Organic , Fresh Veggies at Lunch and Dinner – Less Animal and Processed Foods

Add a fresh salad, other veggies or the equivalent in the form of juices/blends to your main meal. The China Study showed that if your caloric intake from animal proteins is more than 5% of your meals, you risk what are called the “diseases of affluence” such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Also reduce the quantity of all highly processed (junk) foods which includes refined oils. Dr. Esselstyne routinely monitors the reversal of heart disease and advises clients to avoid all processed oils.  This is because liquid fats are artificially extracted from a whole food they tend to oxidize quickly and then harm sensitive blood vessel linings. Fats, in minimal quantities, are best prepared from fresh and mostly vegan sources, such as in making nut and seed butters. Also consider flax, hemp and chia powders made fresh in a coffee grinder. Or consider getting your fats  from fresh avocados and olives. Lastly add “living” foods – soaked or sprouted (again nuts, seeds, beans and grains).

VII – Reduce Emotional, Physical, and Psychological Stress

Evaluate where your greatest external sources of stress are. Try to eliminate or reduce them. Stress will impact one’s overall physical immune system .  That system is what pulls together our innards to maintain health and wholeness. Living in a  more stress-less way brings us to this goal.

VIII – Exercise/Circulate

Exercise offers a controlled way of alternatively stressing and resting the body to ultimately harvest strength and endurance. Try to include 20 minutes to an hour of exercise every day. Research shows this greatly helps reduce the risk of most major illnesses. Sometimes when there are aches and pains in the body, the blood needs to circulate to those areas. Alternative hot and cold packs – and exercise.

IX – Detox

Our modern world is full of chemical toxins. Over a 100,000 are in general circulation. We get them through the air we breath, the foods we eat and whatever touches our skin. There are many ways to reduce this toxic burden. My favorite and the easiest is to use daily saunas. We can also resort to using enemas, colonics, water fasts, juice feasts and so on. I try to organize at least a week-long cleansing program each season.

X – Meditat/Think Deeply

Meditation is a kind of preventative for stress!  What I mean by that is when I mediate and gather  inner peace, I also tend not to knee-jerk react to various stresses of the day or in a mechanical way. I thus feed and strengthen my inner life force.  The focus of the meditation is either a) to be still within and at one or b) to gather together my goals and aspirations for the day. I like the do the former alone and the latter in a group setting. Each has immense value. Each helps to engender better health and quality of life. Secondly, reset your mind to think deeply, beyond superficial cultural influences.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

All of the above 10 simple daily health habits work synergistically together. Leave out one or the other, and all the rest may not work as well. For example, if the body has too toxic a load, no amount of nutrition will heal that. Emotional stress may throw everything else out of whack. So too lack of sleep.

Liver Flush

No Comments 04 August 2010

liver-cleanse

This is a very old and safe recipe that your grandmother probably knew about. Hulda recommends you do a parasite cleanse first to assure the best success. Stop the parasite cleanse a day before you do the liver flush.

Morning of day 1

Mix 4T Epsom salts to 3 cups of water this makes 4 servings of 3/4 each. It’s easier to drink cold so place in refrigerator.

Eat a no fat breakfast and lunch to build up the bile.

2PM Do not eat after 2PM

6PM Drink 3/4 Epsom salts mixture 8PM Drink 3/4 Epsom salts mixture

9:45 PM Mix V2c olive oil with 1/2 to 3/4c freshly juiced red grapefruit or lemon.

10 PM. Drink the olive oil grapefruit drink. Try to get it down within five minutes. After the first

few sips take 4 Ornithine (an amino acid) capsules to help you sleep (8 if you suffer from insomnia).

Drink standing up but lie down immediately. Focus on your liver… you may feel the stones passing. Go to sleep immediately. If you don’t you may fail to get stones out.

Morning of day 2. When you wake up, sometime after 6 AM, take 1/4c Epsom salts mixture. You

may go back to bed.

2 hours later take your last and final dose of Epsom salts mixture.

2 hours later you may drink fruit juice 1/2hour later you may eat fruit.

1 hour later eat normally, you should be recovered by supper.

Expect diarrhea in the morning. Look for small pea green stones floating on top of the water. Some will be brown, but the green ones you know are liver stones and not food residue. They have cholesterol in them that’s why they float. Some will be brown crystals rather than stones, but this too is important to remove. Count them. You need to remove 2000 stones before the liver is clean enough to rid you of allergies, bursitis or upper arm or back pain permanently. You may repeat the liver flush in 2 weeks to give a chance for the stones in the back of the liver to move forward. Never cleanse when you are ill.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed a liver flush.

Filtering Your Water – Getting the Right Water Filter

No Comments 04 August 2010

filter-your-water

Our city water supply is adulterated with the maximum allowed chlorine and fluoride. We have to pay the city to poison our bodies!  Get informed because this is an issue of huge importance. Below is a brief article by Ron Seely……

We don’t drink enough water.

Fresh pure water is very important for both detoxifying your body and keeping it well hydrated. In a book called The Your Body’s Many Cries for Water Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, MD makes a good argument for alleviating many diseases and symptoms by addressing dehydration. (see www.watercure.com )

Early on in my diagnosis I got a new water filter for my drinking water. I got what I researched to be one of the best on the market, A Nikken P Mag. (contact Barbara Harris (434)984-1360 or your local Nikken distributor to learn more.) The Japanese have been using many advanced techniques in water filtration system for years. In addition to carbon filtration, the Nikken Pi Mag uses magnetic technology. Some people believe that illness has a lot to do with the biomagnetics of your body being out of kilter. Magnetic therapy seems to help me and I also carry a bottle of water in a Nikken carrier that has magnets at the bottom.

“‘The key to how magnetic fields can stimulate healing, and help in reversing cancer has to do with its effect on oxygen,’ says Dr Philpott. ‘Magnetic fields can stimulate metabolism and increase the amount of oxygen available to cells. I have concluded that oxygen deficiency, coupled with acidity, are unique characteristics of all cancer cells, and are actually the two main causes of cancer…The more alkaline pH produced by a negative magnetic field is necessary for healing as cancer cannot grow in an alkaline environment,’ Dr Philpott explains.” (see p. 1035-1045 in An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide to Cancer . by W. John Diamond,M.D., W. Lee Cowden, M. D. and Burton Goldberg, Future Medicine Publishing INC, Tiburon, CA 1997)

Nikken also has an optimizer you can buy which adds additional oxygen to the water. I added liquid oxygen to my water: (see Life Support- Oxygen Elements.)

While researching water filters, I also learned about Japanese microwater which claims to be smaller water molecules with added oxygen. (p. 792-793  in An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide to Cancer.) You can buy a microwater filter or you can buy microwater already bottled, (see:  Penta Water by Bio Hydration Research. http://www.myvitanet.com/birelab.html (Whole Foods ordered it for me.)) Microwater is supposed to be more alkaline and more quickly and easily absorbed to hydrate you better. Now I have a Jupiter Orion Filter which produces separates the water into alkaline and acid and you drink the alkaline and clean with the acidic water.

I also bought a good carbon filter for my shower to filter out the chlorine and other carcinogens left over from sewage processing. This is especially important if you are going to use your shower water for home colonics or enemas. Like your drinking water, your enema water needs to be pure. You can always use distilled water for an enema, which is what I did at first. If you live in the city, I do not recommend taking a hot bath and soaking in city water because your body absorbs water through your skin.  According to a Norwegian study consuming chlorinated drinking water is associated with a 20-40% increase in the incidence of colon and rectal cancer.” (p578-579 in 1045 in An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide to Cancer).

I have included an article here from the Wisconsin State Journal which claims that our drinking water is contaminated with traces of antidepressants and estrogens which are not filtered out by our sewage water processing plants. In addition to our drinking water, our lakes and streams are contaminated with pharmaceuticals and hormones and they have found estrogen in fish that are altering the sex of the fish downstream from sewage plants.  Add to that the high incidence of mercury found in fish, this is another good reason to become a vegetarian and to get your fatty omega 3 essential oils from flax instead.

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

Coffee-enema-bag

For further information and the source for some of the information below, see the revolutionproject.

FORM OF HYDRATION

BENEFITS
Here is a short list of the many benefits of coffee enemas:

- TOXIN ELIMINATION – The major benefit of the coffee enema, he said, is to enhance elimination of toxins through the liver.

- CLEANSING – Coffee also acts as an astringent in the large intestine, helping clean the colon walls. A common contributor to ill health is the production and absorption of toxins within the small and large intestines.  If food is not digested properly, sugars ferment and protein putrefies or rots.  Both processes generate toxic chemicals which are then absorbed into the liver.

- STIMULATES BILE FLOW - The coffee enema enhances digestion by increasing bile flow and removes toxins in the large intestine so they will not be absorbed.  Most people with health complaints suffer from impaired digestion and production of toxic substances in the intestines.

- STIMULATES LIVER – Coffee enemas are particularly helpful for slow oxidizers.  Their liver activity is more sluggish and digestion is usually impaired.  Fast oxidizers may have more difficulty retaining the enema.

HOW MUCH WATER
The procedure described below is really a coffee implant rather than an enema, because it involves only two to three cups of water. Using a quart of water may be more difficult to retain for some individuals. However, the use of a quart of water, and making sure the water reaches most of the large intestine, is more helpful for cleansing the colon of accumulated waste material.  If one suspects severe bowel toxicity or in cases of serious illness, quart enemas are preferable, at least to start with.

HOW OFTEN
For those who are very ill, several a day may are best for at least several months [We recommend twice a day] For best results, a program of coffee enemas should be carried on for at least a month. They should not be needed for more than two or three years, although many people have continued to take them for a number of years without problems.

BEST TIME
The best time to take the enema is after a normal movement.  One will get a slight rush from the caffeine, but it is not like drinking coffee, which I do not recommend.  Coffee enemas taken in the evening may interfere with sleep.

SIDE EFFECTS

COFFEE ENEMA INSTRUCTIONS

coffee-enema-instructions

TO START YOU NEED:

- AN ENEMA CONTAINER2-quart enema bag, plastic or stainless steel bucket with a clamp. The bags are sold at drug stores.

- ORGANIC COFFEE – Buy any brand of regular coffee – regular grind or flaked, non-instant and not decaffeinated, or grind your own coffee. Organically grown coffee is best, though any coffee will do.  Organic coffee is available at natural food stores. Store opened coffee containers in the freezer for maximum freshness.

PREPARATION OF  ENEMA INGREDIENTS

Two methods are available and the first is best.

- BOILING METHOD – Place 2 to 3 cups of purified water and two to three tablespoons of coffee in a saucepan and bring to a boil (or use a coffee maker). Let it boil 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and allow it to cool. One or two ice cubes may be added to speed the cooling process.  You may make a larger quantity and use it for several enemas. Wait until the water is comfortable to the touch.  If the water is too hot or too cold, retaining the enema will be more difficult.  Strain the liquid through a fine strainer or coffee filter paper into a clean enema bag.  Screw on the top of the enema bag.  The enema is now ready.

- NON-BOILING METHOD - Place 1 cup of ground coffee in a container with 2 cups of water. Stir the mixture thoroughly and allow it to soak overnight. (You may make a larger quantity if desired). In the morning, filter the liquid through coffee filter paper or a fine strainer. Place in a jar for storage in the refrigerator. To prepare an enema, pour 2 cups of purified water into the enema bag. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of the coffee liquid from the jar.

PREPARING EQUIPMENT

- PREPARE CONTAINER HOSES – Be sure the plastic hose is pushed or fastened well onto the enema bag and the thin enema tip is attached to the other end

-REMOVE AIR – Remove any air from the enema tube the following way.  Grasp but do not close the clamp on the hose.  Place the tip in the sink.  Hold up the enema bag above the tip until the water begins to flow out. Then close the clamp. This expels any air in the tube.

-LUBRICATE - Lubricate the enema tip with a small amount of soap or oil. We like to use castor oil.(Too much lubrication will cause the tip to fall out of the rectum, creating a mess!).

TAKING THE ENEMA

- POSITION - The position preferred by most people is lying on one’s back on a towel, on the bathroom floor or in the bath tub. An alternative is siting on the toilet, which does not give as much gravity feed.

- PLACE CONTAINER ABOVE - With the clamp closed, hang the bag about one foot above your abdomen.

- INSERT - Insert the tip gently and slowly.  Move it around until it goes all the way in.

- OPEN FLOW - Open the clamp and hold the enema bag about one foot above the abdomen. The water may take a few seconds to begin flowing. If the water does not flow, you may gently squeeze the bag.  If you develop a cramp, close the hose clamp, turn from side to side and take a few deep breaths. The cramp will usually pass quickly.

- WHEN FULL -When all the liquid is inside, the bag will become flat or the container will be empty.  Close the clamp. You can leave the tube inserted, or remove it slowly.

- RETAIN THE ENEMA FOR 15 MINUTES - See below if you have difficulties with this.  You may remain lying on the floor. Use the time to read a book, meditate, etc.  Some people are able to get up and go lie on a towel in bed, instead of on the floor.  Walking around the house with the coffee inside is not recommended.

FINISHING UP

After 15 minutes or so, go to the toilet and empty out the water. It is okay if some water remains inside.  If water remains inside often, you are dehydrated.

- WASH ENEMA EQUIPMENT – Wash the enema bag or container and tube thoroughly.

FURTHER HINTS

- AFTER BOWEL MOVEMENT – If possible, do the enema after a bowel movement to make it easier to retain the coffee. If this is not possible, take a plain water enema first if needed, to clean out the colon.

- DEALING WITH GAS – If intestinal gas is a problem, some exercise before the enema may eliminate the gas.

- FILLING UP -  It is not essential but is helpful if the water fills the entire colon. You can assist by first lying on your right side for 5 minutes, then on your back for 5 minutes, and then on your left side for 5 minutes.

- MASSAGE – If water will not flow around the entire colon, you may gently massage your abdomen.

- LONGER TUBE – Some people attach a 30-inch colon tube to the tip of the enema tube, and insert the tube so the water will reach the right side of the colon.

- REDUCE AMOUNT OF COFFEE - If the enema makes you jittery, reduce the amount of coffee.

- EAT SOMETHING BEFORE - The enema may lower your blood sugar. If so, eat something just before or after taking the enema.

FINAL SUGGESTIONS:

- PATIENCE – Be patient as practice makes perfect.

- TEMPERATURE – The water may be too hot or too cold.  Be sure the water temperature is comfortable.

- STAY COMFORTABLE – It may help to place a small pillow or rolled up towel under your buttocks so the water flows down hill into your colon.

- ADDING MOLASSES – If trouble continues, try reducing the amount of coffee or add 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses to the water.

BASIC RESEARCH ON COFFEE ENEMAS

Coffee-enema-research

ENEMA’S AFFECT ON GALL BLADDER
Coffee contains choleretics, substances that increase the flow of toxin-rich bile from the gallbladder. The coffee enema may be among the only pharmaceutically effective choleretics noted in the medical literature that can be safely used many times daily without toxic effects.

ENZYME SYSTEMS
Max Gerson, M.D. founder of the Gerson Institute and Gerson Diet Therapy, recognized that coffee enema is effective in stimulating a complex enzyme system The increased activity of these enzymes ensures that free-radical activity is greatly diminished and that carcinogens are blocked. While free-radicals are normal products of metabolism, uncontrolled free-radical production plays a major role in the development of degenerative disease including cancer, heart disease and aging involved in liver detoxification (called the glutathione-S-transferase enzyme system). The activity of the glutiathione enzyme system is increased by at lease 600% above normal.

DILATION AND RELAXATION
Caffeine also stimulates dilation of blood vessels and relaxation of smooth muscle, which further increases bile flow; this effect does not happen when the coffee is consumed orally.

FOUR MASTER KEYS TO NATURAL HEALING

4 Comments 22 July 2010

four-master-keys-to-health

These are the four most powerful keys to natural healing.

  • NUTRITION – Using close to a 100% alive, organic, low-glycemic, and whole vegan foods will reverse most chronic ills. For more information and research on such diets see our research tab.

  • DETOXIFICATION – There are several modalities. We use saunas to most powerfully draw out toxins. Juice and water fasts also have benefits. This can involve either drinking pure water or a juice feast and the use of blends. We can engage in kidney and liver flushes, as well as colonics, to further flush out other major channels of elimination and detoxification.
  • CIRCULATION : This can helps to move the prior two processes. It can be enhanced with various forms of exercise such as walking, swimming, yoga, chi gong, and tai chi. We also recommend the use of infrared saunas and supplements that have a chelating and vessel clearing/dilating effect.

  • MEDITATION : This is a catch all for all kinds of inner work to heal one’s mind, emotions and overall state of inner consciousness.  There are different strategies possible. See our article on Raw Wisdom Meditation. Toxic or catabolic (destructive) thoughts and feelings are like toxic chemicals to our inner consciousness. We also recommend understanding raw-wisdom’s life-centered worldview (What is Raw-Wisdom?) for a top-down guiding to the overall healing of ourselves, others and the planet.

TIPS TO CREATE A “DETOX DAY”

    No Comments 09 June 2010

    detox-day

First here is a list of what you need to prepare for your Detox Day:

    FOODS
Greens, Lemons or Limes, Bee Pollen

    CLEANSING SUPPLEMENTS
Colosan, Naturalax 2, Psyllium Powder, Colloidal Bentonite, Vitamin C and niacin

    EQUIPMENT
Juicer, Home Sauna (or gym access to one), Water filter, Qt Canning Jars, and Skin Brush

    Now here are the instructions:

    EARLY MORNING INNER FLUSH DRINK
First I recommend waking up early, with the sunrise, to make a colon flush drink. It consists of a) a teaspoon of Colosan (made of oxides of magnesium) combined with b) a teaspoon of lemon or lime juice. Put these into a glass of water and drink with three capsules of Naturalax 2 (made by Nature’s Way). Then two-three hours later you should have the equivalent of diahhea or a flushing of both the colon and small intestines. The magnesium also helps to relax the same. I do this sometime between 4-6am or again whenever the sun rises.

SECOND GLASS OF WATER WITH CITRIC
Here a couple hours later we drink a second glass of water with some citric juice – and in lieu of breakfast. This is  again to cleanse the digestive tract further and prepare for a sauna (where you do not want to be dehydrated). You can do this sauna also at a gym or purchase a home sauna (which can be gotten inexpensively with a home portable model).

    SAUNA FOR 20-30 MINUTES
I greatly enjoy take a sauna in my home portable model Relax Sauna, and then read a book for 20-30 minutes until a get a good sweat.

    SHOWER WITH SKIN BRUSHING
Followup the sauna with an alternating hot and cold shower plus dry skin brushing. I further like to do wet skin-brushing, using a mildly abrasive eco-scouring pad I get from most any local supermarket.

    THIRD CLEANSING DRINK
After the shower, and by mid-morning, we take 12 ounces of filtered water and put it in the blender. Add a tablespoon of psyllium powder(such as Sonne’s # 9) with a tablespoon of colloidal bentonite, such as Sonne’s # 7) and blend for a couple seconds and then drink this right away before it gels. This will absorb toxins out of the linings of your now flushed out digestive tract.

    GREEN JUICE
By noon time you want to make yourself a green juice instead of a solid lunch. I usually make three quart jars and add vitamin C to the two extra jars that are stored in the refrigerator for sipping throughout the day. For more detailed tips on how best to juice, store, and use your juice, see the two-part blog posts tips for juicing . With my evening juice I like to add one tablet or 100 milligrams of niacin. This gives a skin flush near the end of this day of detoxing – helping to drive cleaner blood deep into my cells.

    ENDING OUR DETOX DAY
It is best to take a second sauna as well as shower and skin brushing at the day’s end and to also extend this wonderful detox through the night. Then you can deservedly congratulate yourself the next morning for having mustered the will power to follow through and get the maximum of healing benefits.

VIKTORAS KULVINSKAS NATURAL BODY DETOXIFICATION PROGRAM

    1 Comment 02 May 2010

    viktoras-kulvinskas-natural-body-detoxification-program

Viktoras Kulvinskas Natural Body Detoxification Program

    INTRODUCTION
Viktoras Kulvinskas has put together such a really superb detox program I just had to share it with my readers. It combines a detoxification of colon (through two alternative programs), skin (bathing the largest detox organ), kidney (daily liquid diets) and lungs (via exercise) and bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc using hydrogen peroxide therapies. Detoxification is one of the four main pillars of natural healing. It is not surprising that Viktoras, the father of the raw food movement who helped Ann Wigmore pioneer a living food diet, should have perfected the detoxifcation process to such a high level – also re-establishing the living forces to dominate in our bodies. Giving  yet more credibility to what he offers, he is not selling a list of products – what so often biases or makes an approach untrustworthy. The program runs 4 months during the local warm season from May 1 to August 31. Thus Kulvinskas writes (which we have mostly modified the format with headings and re-groupings to make it easier to follow):

    Dear Raw Foods Friends,

The protocols presented below were were devised after years of study and self-experimentation by myself and my colleague in healing arts, Richard G. Tasca, Jr. (http://www.facebook.com/richardraw). We have endeavored for many years to share with you our best knowledge about the raw foods and natural path to personal, familial, societal and planetary healing.

We have designed this Detoxification and Rejuvenation Program specifically to allow you to detoxify and heal safely and comfortably and thoroughly and at the same time prevent the muscle wasting and weight loss which can often occur. It will improve systemic health and enhance your utilization and experience of your raw foods diet. Given the severity of your health predicament, it would be advisable to remain on this program indefinitely until the desired healing occurs. This can be done at home. While you will need some supplies and adjunct treatments, I have tried to keep the costs to a minimum.
“LET THY FOOD BE THY MEDICINE” – Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine

“LET ME SHARE MY VISION – I SEE THE WORLD WITHOUT SICKNESS, SORROW OR MENTAL DISTURBANCES” – Dr. Ann Wigmore

    DRINKS

    A) VEG JUICES – (1 quart minimum)
Blender with juice straining bags and/or Juicer  and fresh vegetables &  fruits for juices.  Instructions: Each day drink a minimum of 1 quart of vegetable juice, one cupful at a time for best digestion. Use carrot, apples, cucumber, parsley, cabbage, any greens (kale, parsley, cilantro, dandelion, romaine lettuce) and always add garlic for its antimicrobial properties and other unique health benefits. The apples add some sweetness and make it taste better until you get used to it. Some use grapefruit instead of apples.

    B) MAINTAINING PROTEIN (1 quart)
Seeds, nuts (to soak overnight and make milks) or raw hemp powder for protein during cleanse.  Raw hemp protein powder  is available at health food stores. Instructions for making seed and nut milks: Blend any seed or nut which has been soaked overnight and then rinse with water. Blend to a smooth and creamy consistency. Strain so that you have milk. You should not you any sweetener but to improve taste you can use any combination of organic cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cayenne and/or coriander to suit your taste. I like Garam Marsala, an Indian spice. Drink up to one quart daily. You can use the raw hemp protein for convenience instead of the seeds and nuts. Try to keep you protein intake at 60 to 70 grams per day. This will prevent muscle and organ tissue wasting.

    C) CLEANSING DIGESTIVE TRACT (follow instructions)
    1) Dr. Natura Colonix Program - http://www.drnatura.com. Study the information and follow directs at this website carefully. This inner cleanse will pleasantly purge the digestive tract and bowel of mucus, catarrh and dietary dross which interferes with optimal health. Additionally, it will detoxify heavy metals from your system and replenish the GI tract with beneficial microflora and probiotics.

    2) Sonne’s Internal Cleanse Programhttp://www.sonnes.com. Alternatively use this for a intestinal cleanse. It  is less expensive and available at most health food stores. Take the Sonne’s program with the Nature’s Way Naturalax # 2 according to the directions twice daily for two weeks and thereafter one daily. (Note: After 4 weeks, discontinue using the Sonne’s colloidal clay in the preparation.) Directions include placing 12 ounces of water in a blend. Ad 1 tablespoon of Sonne’s Detoxicant #7. This is colloidal clay that will act as a magnet to remove toxins from your bloodstream and thereby create a significant boost to your immune system. Turn blender on and add 1 heaping teaspoon of Sonne’s Formula #9, psyllium seed. Blend only a few seconds and drink quickly as the product will gel rapidly and become less palatable. Take with 2 or 3 capsules of Dr. John R. Christopher’s Lower Bowel Tonic – Nature’s Way Naturalax #3 – see http://www.betterthangreens.com/Product_187.HTML. This will assist your body in eliminating old fecal deposits and mucal cattarh from the intestinal tract. This product is also available at most health food stores and online.

    D) DRINKS – FLUSHING KIDNEYS WITH WATER (see below)
Drink half of your body weight in ounces of clean pure water daily. (If you weigh 120 pounds, drink at least 60 ounces of of water).

    SKIN DETOX

You need Epsom salts, fine sea salt, aluminum free baking soda (available at most health food stores) and hydrogen peroxide 35% food grade.

    1) SALT SCRUB
On the first evening and as necessary thereafter evening, go into shower and wet your body. Rub fine sea salt hard all over body,l using it as a kind of sandpaper, to remove dead skin cells and open all the pores of the skin. Avoid sensitive areas such as eyes, nipples and genitals.

    2) THERAPEUTIC DETOXIFYING BATHS
Soak in a hot bath to which you have added one pound of sea salt and one cups of Epsom salts and one cup of aluminum free baking soda Adding ten drops of essential lavender oil will be extremely relaxing. Or you can use therapeutic mineral salts if you can find them there at your health food store. I would try to do this every two or three days for the first two weeks of your cleanse and occasionally thereafter. You can have at any time nice bath in which has been dissolved a three pound box of kosher salt which is available in almost any supermarket. You may also add 1 cup of undiluted 35% food grade H2O2 to a bath of water. This is hightly detoxifying and healing and invigorating. Always do this before nightfall as it is highly stimulating and energizing and can disturb sleep.

    INTERNAL HYDROGEN PEROXIDE THERAPY

See http://www.h2o2hydrogenperoxide.com/index.HTML This is critical and absolutely necessary. The use of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide will oxygenate your bloodstream and thereby optimize your healing potential. It will kill yeasts, parasites, microbes and even the paploma virus which are all contributing to cancerous conditions and compromise the immune system. 35% food grade H2O2 is available at some health food stores and online. Never use or touch 35% H2O2 when it is undiluted. Always exercise extreme caution when using undiluted H2O2 as it will burn the skin. If that happens (the skin will begin to turn white) – flush skin with cold water. I generally transfer it from the larger quart container to a small glass jar for easier handling and then use a dropper to add the drops to a glassful of water. [always drink on an empty stomach because it acts with vitamin C and fatty acids. An alternative is the use of MMS with citric acid. Follow instructions upon purchase. See http://mmswebsites.com]. The protocol for H2O2 intake is as follows with a dosage schedule for undiluted 35% H202 Always to 8 ounces of water add:

    1st day,use 9 drops ( 3 drops, 3 times/day)
    2nd day,use 12 drops ( 4 drops, 3 times/day)
    3rd day,use 15 drops ( 5 drops, 3 times/day)
    4th day,use 18 drops ( 6 drops, 3 times/day)
    5th day,use 21 drops ( 7 drops, 3 times/day)
    6th day,use 24 drops ( 8 drops, 3 times/day)
    7th day,use 27 drops ( 9 drops, 3 times/day)
    8th day,use 30 drops (10 drops, 3 times/day)
    9th day,use 36 drops (12 drops, 3 times/day
    10th day,use 42 drops (14 drops, 3 times/day)
    11th day,use 48 drops (16 drops, 3 times/day)
    12th day,use 54 drops (18 drops, 3 times/day
    13th day,use 60 drops (20 drops, 3 times/day)
    14th day,use 66 drops (22 drops, 3 times/day)
    15th day,use 72 drops (24 drops, 3 times/day
    16th day,use 75 drops (25 drops, 3 times/day)

For more serious complaints stay at 25 drops, 3 times per day for 1 – 3 weeks. Next graduate down to 25 drops, 2 times per day until the problem is taken care of. This may take from 1 – 6 months. Don’t give up!

    OTHER ENHANCING OR ADJUNCT THERAPIES

    1) MISC SUPPLEMENTS
If possible, have a couple of servings of wheatgrass juice, E3Live, or spirulina daily. You can Google those for more information. They are available in many health food stores and also online.

    2) COLONIC IRRIGATION
If  available in your area, is really this is a necessity to help assist in pulling out the dross of past dietary abuse from the body. Especially at the beginning of implementing the program colonic irrigation will help avoid more severe detoxification symptom. Try to have three colonics the first week on the program and one each week thereafter for two months. That would be optimal.

    3) PROTEOLYTIC ENZYME THERAPY
Enzymes are what really triggers the healing and normalization of body functioning. While the raw juices are replete with enzymes, in cases of chronic and critical disease such as yours, Enzyme Therapy is crucial. See http://www.energeticnutrition.com/vitalzym/vitalzym.HTML Many enzyme products in health food stores do contain pancreatin which is an animal product. I prefer to use vegan source enzymes. You can find these in most health food stores and online and at the link immediately above.

    4) PROBIOTIC THERAPY
You will need some for of probiotic formula to restore healthy intestinal microflora. Many fine products are available in health food stores and online. Alternatively, you can explore making fermented seed and nuts milks or cabbage juice online.

    5) HEAVY METAL CLEANSE
Cleansing the heavy metals which most of us have accumulated in our bodies through vaccinations, foodstuffs, pollution, and even smoking, is imperative. Heavy metals compromise the immune system and interfere with the body energetics, that is, optimal flow of the electromagnetic life force (chi, prana). This can be accomplished in either or both of two ways. The volcanic mineral called zeolite acts as a magnet for and binds with the heavy metals in our system and then they are removed mostly through the kidneys. See http://www.waiora.com/ for further information. Also, ionic foot cleanse baths are able to detoxify the heavy metals by drawing them out through the bloodstream and soles of the feet. Many holistic practitioners offer this. You can also purchase your own unit for use in your own home. See: http://www.amajordifference.com/

    6) SAUNAS
( For  home portable models see link to portable home relax sauna
    7) MASSAGE/ BODY WORK

    8) CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS

    9) EXERCISE
Do some form of exercise daily even if its only walking.

If your resources for these other therapies are limited, try negotiating or bartering for fee. You will be amazed at how well you will begin to feel after using this protocol.for only a week or so You mind will become more clear. Your experience will be heightened and your senses will open in ways that you cannot imagine. As your body rapidly detoxifies, normal sleep patterns will re-establish. You should rest and sleep whenever and as much as possible to assist your body in the intensive healing that will result from implementing these protocols.

    10) ABOVE ALL USE PRAYER AND MEDITATION
Make peace with God and practice kindness to all creatures. That is always first and foremost. For in the end, our bodies will fail and fade away and our souls will go to God. I hope and pray that we have been helpful to you.

All Blessings. All Love. Always and All Way Your Friend,

    VIKTORAS

    OVERCOMING AND CURING CYSTIC FIBROSIS

    Overcoming-and-curing-cystic-fibrosis

    Gerson Green Healing Juices

    THE STORY OF FAYE CHIPPERFIELD
Faye Chipperfield came to the Gerson Therapy hospital at the age of 14 suffering from CF or cystic fibrosis. CF is a genetically-triggered disorder that causes, among other things, excess mucus to clog the lungs and other vital passageways. Such congestion creates a feeding ground for infections. The usual response is a constant treatment with antibiotics. Cystic Fibrosis is said to be incurable. That label is typically proposed when conventional medicine fails to heal and/or assume responsibility for such failures.

REVISION OF THE ORIGINAL BLOG POST
Several readers of this blog have been up in arms about such statements about CF being potentially curable. Thus I have added a more detail to clarify this. I also pointed out in a prior posted blog that CF definitely involves a set of defective genes from both parents. See Cystic Fibrosis – Can It Be Reversed? Some readers tried to say that I had poorly research this issue in saying  “CF is only “supposedly genetic” and was therefore posting misinformation. Rather the question remains is the essence of what we are dealing with a fixed and permanent genetic defect. In other words, is this permanently indelible or something that the healing powers of the body can or cannot overcome and repair once genetically triggered. So I am here adding a reference to an important discussion of the gene theory http://bit.ly/Mendel- and therein what is deterministic (cannot be reversed or cured) and what is not so. Certainly genes can help determine whether something in a seed grows to become a potato or a carrot or an apple tree. But other factors, lifetime care and surroundings, also come into play whether such living forms are whole and healthy or subject to disease and rot. The same can be true for our lives.

    THE  SCARY PART
When a person has an illness as deep-seated,  frightening and mysterious as CF , and triggered by hidden genes that we can’t see, feel or touch, we naturally rely immensely on the wisdom, science and knowledge of professionals to help us overcome or at least deal as best with the condition. The advise of MD doctors is thus far more than a deepest emotional security. It is a patient’s most important lifeline to life. Any serious critique of the doctor’s approach will appear threatening. But we have to come to grips with a larger  fact. The modern view of healing our bodies is substantially failing on a societal level – with many chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, arthritis, arteriosclerosis on the rise and not being healed. Would a successful healthcare system be discreasing our health costs or near bankrupting our economy? Knowledge is not the same as wisdom (knowing rather what knowledge to know as being vital).

    STEPPING OUTSIDE
When stepping outside the allopathic medical paradigms (rooted in the 17th century’s vision) we do see real and dramatic reversals of many major chronic ailments. This is because the life forces in the body are fed, nurtured and elicited or brought out – and not the principles of machines or what is mechanical. Doctors rarely understand how a life-force eliciting therapy works because it violates their root paradigms about pharmacology and genetics. They may call it a fluke or impossible and try to debunk any apparent turnaround as a spontaneous remission. Bringing out living forces is really an entirely different kind of medical science. I outline this in this blog and in other writings - using living foods, periodic detoxifcations, meditation and excise in lieu of drugs, surgery, radiation and genetic engineering.  The rare scourge of cystic fibrosis is no exception. This is because the deeper laws of nature may be considered the more universal and deeper digging.  Thus imagine that genes or gentic expression can potentially be repaired, in part or full, by such an approach. Here I have just dug up Faye’s single case as an example of many.

ILL AFTER A SERIES OF VACCINATIONS
In the case of Faye, the child appeared normal at birth but at age six months was given a series of vaccinations for mumps, measles and rubella. After this treatment, she developed an infection that she could not overcome. The diagnosis then was cystic fibrosis. Kept on an extended regime of antibiotics, she also began to have pain and breathing difficulties and was not growing normally as is typical for cystic fibrosis sufferers.

    LIFE EXPECTANCY
For the record, life expectancy of a CF patient has risen over the past four decades. It has shown considerable progress. Currently it is somewhere between 35-38 years of age, according to different sources. Before digging into several statistical sources, I  posted 20 years (copying an older article).  On further research I discovered the average life-expectancy was even lower in the 1980′s.  Fortunately now we see the median life expectancy is about 32 years for newborns. For those children who survive infancy, average life expectancy is higher, closer to 40 years. Lastly, with adequate pancreatic function it can exceed 50 years.  So there is significant cause for hope in terms of life-extension. But another question remains. Can we do still much better by repairing the genetic defect more deeply? Can we actually cure this ailment as such,  extending not only the number of years but the ultimate quality of life?

MOTHER AND CHILD’S CONDITIONS BOTH REVERSED
Getting back to our story, with the Gerson Therapy and using intense living food vegetable and fruit juices, Faye’s infections came under control. Her breathing normalized, and her chest pains went away. When the child returned home she went off the Gerson Therapy and some symptoms came back. Ignoring the dire warnings of her Australian physicians, the young girl and her mother braved a long flight and return to the Gerson Mexico clinic where again her condition improved. Her mother’s chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) cleared up as well.  As is common with CF patients, Faye was advised she probably could never have children. On the contrary she had a a beautiful, normal and healthy baby.

Some years ago I helped fund the establishment of a Gerson therapy center in Sedona Arizona. We had patients there who reversed many diverse chronic illnesses. Among them was a young chiropractor from Oneonta, NY. He had Stage VI Melanoma, generally incurable, which was reversed. For more information on how I became involved with the Gerson Therapy see www.raw-wisdom.com/bio. Also see the blog post Cystic Fibrosis – Can It Be Reversed?

CYSTIC FIBROSIS – CAN IT BE REVERSED?

    Cystic Fibrosis -

    Can It Be Reversed?

    WHAT IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS

(Healingtalks) Cystic fibrosis is said to be an hereditary disease that mostly affects the clogging of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. It is often thought to be progressive, resulting in increasing disability and early death. The term refers to scarring and cyst formation (such as in the pancreas) and which was first recognized as a distinct ailment in 1930. The most pronounced symptom are the obstruction of  body channels. The results include difficulty in breathing and frequent lung and sinus infections – along with poor growth, diarrhea, and infertility.  The overall cause is presumably a mutation of the gene CFTR or cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. The gene is linked to the regulation of sweat, digestive juices, and mucus. It is known as an autosomal recessive disease as it develops when two paired genes from both parents are not working normally.

    PREVALENCE  OR RARITY OF CF

About 1 in 3,000 white births, 1 in 15,000 black births, and 1 in 32,000 Asian births exhibit this disease. Approximately 30,000 Americans have cystic fibrosis. This makes it one of the most common, life-shortening diseases. CF patients progressively worsen and die at a young age. Sometimes they receive lung transplants to try to lengthen their life span. As with  most chronic and systemic ailments, allopathic medicine states that it sees no cure for cystic fibrosis. The only conventional prognosis then is for life-long treatment.

    TESTING FOR CF

A simple saliva test can determine the presence of cystic fibrosis, as can genetic testing.  Newborns can be screened via  a blood test (looking for concentrations of immunoreactive trypsinogen) though it can provide a false positive so that this has to be confirmed via a sweat test. Parents can also undergo prenatal testing.

    CF SYMPTOMS

Cystic Fibrosis symptoms include salty tasting skin (high levels of sweat electrolytes), sticky mucous, poor ability to gain height or weight, despite a normal diet.  Bowel obstructions may occur as well as chronic coughing, gagging, vomiting and/or shortness of breath due to clogging of the airways.  Clogging of the pancreas results in poor digestion or malabsorption. Damage of the pancreas can also lead to diabetes.  At least 97% of men with cystic fibrosis are infertile but not sterile – or can have children via assisted means.

    A RUTHLESS DISEASE

Needless to say, cystic fibrosis is a ruthless disease, and we can find more details about its conventional writeups such as that of Wikepedia. Here we move on to the main question.

    IS CF AN INCUREABLE DISEASE?

First it is important to know that what in allopathic medical lore is called a disease symptom is often the result of our bodies trying to rid themselves of toxins. This includes the formation of mucous which, as David Wolfe points out in the SunfoodDiet, both buffers sensitive organs and transports acids and chemical poisons out of the body. This is why we cough and sneeze.  Fevers which are triggered by infections do the same. They try to help the body rid itself of what is harmful.  If we treat such “diseased conditions” via suppressive means,  as is common in conventional modern medicine, we may be thwarting the core of a healing process – and thus causing a progressive degeneration that ultimately must lead to death. And so we may give the patient powerful antibiotics to suppress fevers and abnormally high protein diets, which are generally acid-forming and thus mucus generating!  Indeed then cystic fibrosis becomes an incurable disease that is life-threatening.

    GENE-THEORY

The original gene theory was the result of Gregory Mendel’s attempt to understand any  transfer of features from parent to offspring via some atomic-like, thus mechanical, statistical or math-bound view. Life’s generational adventures were forced to fit the overall mechanical model of Newton’s universe. What this ignores is that life and consciousness do not fit that model. Life and consciousness are at the core of our being and not the principles of a machine.

    CONSCIOUSNESS

Because consciousness is the relationship of connection itself in nature and healing also is a form of reconnection, the enhancement of consciousness results in depth and integral healing. This is something largely unknown in modern medicine. Thus to say that genes maintain a life-long fixed and predetermined disease path is essentially expressive of the same mechanistic/machine-like view of our bodies. This fits the needs of a commercial, price-tagging culture.  The problem is when one is stuck in a mechanical view, there is no deep understanding of how to elicit again life’s consciousness/healing forces. Then the mechanical view (including the  chemical, math-designed) becomes dominant and prophetically self-determinative.  The illness follows its mechanical course – as expected – downhill.  To change that downward course we need to break out of the whole and entire mechanical mindset.

    EXAMPLE OF A DOWNHILL PATH

Let me illustrate this with an example highlighted in an essay by my friend Arnold, of Arnold’s Way.  It is the story of a little boy by the name of Thomas Paul Parson, Jr. He was born in 1997 and diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of 4 months. He soon had weight loss which brought his weight down to 7 lbs. As his mucous thickened and would not drain, he was treated with nine chemical medications for nearly half a year.  He was given extra protein and calories as that is the normal. The overload creates yet more mucous – especially when dairy products are involved. The body starts to cough more, being further abused. Fevers and more skin sweat excretions occur as the body struggles nobly to offset the treatment.  Thomas Paul was bombarded by the best of conventional know-how for a year and a half  and with no signs of improvement. He constantly had pneumonia bouts. He was fed intravenously with a tube surgically installed, and  to the point of his small veins collapsing.

    REVERSING CF DIRECTIONS

Then at 22 months of age his parents decided to switch gears. They took their child off the medications and replaced them with a diet of raw and living fruits and vegetables. The transformation and reversal was immediate.  As the diet changed, so did the symptoms. The pneumonia bouts stopped, the shortness of breath, the coughs, the thick mucous excretions.  The X-rays showed the lung tissue scars, a gross manifestation of cystic fibrosis, were gone.  Thomas Paul is now growing up normally.

    PAST DEPTH-ILLUSIONS

We have written over and over again that modern medicine has its epistemological and ontological roots – its knowledge gaining and physical foundations – in the essential illusion process of human consciousness. What is illusion? It is the breakdown in the integrity of consciousness. What is consciousness? The principle of connection itself in nature. How does modern medicine organize its consciousness overall? Via the study of chemistry, physics, and genetics or the math-based view of nature – the mechanical. What is mathematics? The highest organizing abstractions for the separation of all elements of consciousness. This designs what is mechanical - creating machines made of separate parts. In living  and healing domains, however, those symbols  work to disintegrate the connective essence of consciousness. Why? Because again consciousness’ essential essence is universally connectivity, and what math symbols point to is universally separative – disintegrating phenomenon. This helps build machines made of separate parts that are neither conscious nor alive. It is thus a mistake to view the physical body as a machine. This extends to the gene theory which is also a mechanical view of our inherent essence.

    IN PRACTICAL TERMS

Most physicians are not really callous, malicious or deceitful. They, themselves, tend to believe in what they practice as being the best. They have little clue about alternatives and how they might work differently. With a large percentage of medical educational being funded by pharmaceutical giants, modern physcians turn out to be mis-educated in the natural healing arts.

    STOPPED LISTING

The so-called miracle of Thomas Paul’s reversal is actually routine among the rare patients who turn to natural healing arts that involve the re-establishing of a higher level of life force in the body.  It occurred in this case because his parents stopped listening to, as Arnold writes, phrases like  ”closely monitored in taking of drugs,” “getting the best of individualized care” or “following the lastest pharmaceutical studies that have shown clearly that…” and so on and so forth - the typical authority-generating, mumbo-jumbo fooling jargon. Thomas Paul’s parents had the strength and courage to spiritually break out of this modern madness.

    ANOTHER EXAMPLE

It was 24years ago that Denley Fowlke had two beautiful twin daughers who were fed the Standard American Diet  (SAD). When they appeared ill, he allowed doctors to give them antibiotics but this failed to help them with their frequent infections. His daughters started to also lose weight. After being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis they were given more drugs.  Screening and diagnosis is modern medicine’s gateway to pharmaceutical sales. Since the drugs weren’t working, the doctors suggested sending his daughters to the University of Utah for still more intense drug therapy. Denley, after some deep thought and prayers, gathered the intense inner strength needed to resist such culturally dominant advise. A friend suggested he should speak to a lay and alternative healer. He went to her, and her words which ringed in his mind for years were “you do what I say and you will never have these babies back in the hospital.”

    ALTERNATIVES THERAPIES FOR CF

So Denley returned home to clear his kitchen cupboards of all SAD processed foods and began to buy just fresh fruits and vegetables. The girls took two mineral baths each day for two hours. The result was a deep detoxification from precisely the drug therapies meant for  ”disease maintenance.” This then allowed a true healing to begin. If an intense healing crisis or fever started to manifest, fresh potato juices rather than antibiotics was used. The symptoms were not treated as a disease to suppress. They were rather seen as a sign of immense hope and encouragement . The body was trying and  now able to reverse the condition.  Over time the two girls developed rashes, again a great healing sign as the body was ready to release poisons. Over more time the traditional symptoms of cystic fibrosis subsided and disappeared.

MOVING OUT OF AN AGE OF DARKNESS

We live in an age of immense spiritual and health practice darkness but with growing signs of light and hope. Some cannot see through the thick brambles of modern illusions. As the breakdown of consciousness integrity occurs, so also the consequences include a parallel breakdown of our body’s health. But this is a learning adventure for those willing to learn what nature teaches us. Thus the  reverse is also true. As the clouds within begin to clear, we start to see more light and travel ever more steadily on a path to integral wholeness and healing.

    HOW TO BECOME SUPER-HEALTHY

    How To Become Super Healthy

    BEING AND BECOMING SUPER-HEALTHY
Today was a fun day. I ran a 5K as part of a local American Heart Association fundraiser in about 10 degree weather – it was exhilarating – and we met lots of inspiring people. After the race, I got my blood and circulation checked and the results were exceptional. At age 60, my blood pressure was 98/68, my blood cholesterol was 150 and the body fat was 19%. I never worry or am in fear of getting cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis. Alzheimer’s or asthma. Why?  Because I know the root and deeper principles that both cause and help us avoid those diseases. It is not really guess work. I also don’t feel I am getting older at 60. I am actually getting younger. This past year I have seen some old conditions reversed. This is the result of what I’ve learned of the healing arts as a naturopath and of how to see and understand nature as a whole, as an environmental philosopher. The healing arts are always part of, and reflect a larger posture.

    WHERE TO TURN
If you don’t know whom to trust,  it’s generally best to follow personal examples. I remember meeting Dr. Atkins a few years ago at a health convention. He looked terrible and aged. A few years later he died of a heart attack.  If the doctor you are most closely following looks a mess, would you trust his or her advise?

HOW TO REALLY BECOME INCREASINGLY HEALTHY
It is important to keep things simple.  I advocate no more than four simple approaches to healing. They involve 1) what we take in (nutrition, hydration, air and sunshine),  2) detoxification or getting out all we should,  3) supporting circulation without which both nutrition or detoxification fail to work  and finally 4) uplifting our minds, hearts, and consciousness. Of the four, the far most important is to start with a healing of our minds’ understanding (especially larger or broader concepts via a philosophy of healing) and then a healing of our hearts’ feeling.  Without any inner transformation, the rest cannot be attained.

    MISSION OF THIS BLOG
This is why I started working on this blog, to share the best of powerful healing talks, both of my own and in the future of others. I have plans to take this blog to a higher level - and it will happen as surely as the winter passes.

    A CHALLENGING TIME
This winter has been indeed a challenging time for me. I love to spend lengthy hours posting new materials here on healing talks. My primary income, however, is derived otherwise – from oddly giving tax advise during the short tax season. I do like the fact that this second career choice gives me ample income to pursue other interests throughout the rest of the year. So I may post less during the winter, but I am dedicated to making those few pithy and full of what really stirs and excites me.

    ANOTHER CHALLENGE
Please note that last month, the server of this blog crashed and the backup didn’t work. We rescued the posts nevertheless. We lost just minor formatting and categorizing and we plan to fix this as soon as we can.

CHEMICALS IN NEWBORNS AND INFANTS – WHY DETOX

    1 Comment 31 December 2009

The umbilical chord  is meant to bring nutrients and oxygen to an infant. Nowadays it also brings hundreds of toxic chemicals and poisons along with the nutrients. Between 2007-8,  the Environmental Working Group tested a group of minority infants and found 232 known chemical poisons in their blood.

    TYPES OF CHEMICALS
Mercury and PCB were among the most lethal chemicals that were present. The group also found BPA, a petrochemical derived from babies plastic bottles. Perfluiributanoic acid was further uncovered, an ingredient of non-stick cookware. Its a PFC chemical linked to promoting cancer. Synthetic fragrances and detergents were prominently present. Actually 9 out of 10 of the umbilical chords contained various chemicals from rocket fuel, which also tend to hamper brain development. A fire retardant was present which interferes with thyroid functions. The list goes on!

    PRIOR STUDY
This was the 11th in a series of studies by The Environmental Working Group which has discovered a total of 404 chemicals so far in human blood. A similar infant study was conducted in 2005. It also isolated industrial chemicals in the umbilical chord of  American infants and found 287 present out of a total of 400 tested. Of the 287, 180 were known to cause cancer in humans and animals.  Furthermore, 208 cause birth defects. More chemicals would have been studied except for the fact that chemical companies are not required by law to reveal how such chemicals can be detected. There are currently about 100,000 industrial chemicals in use and 150,000 registered pharmaceuticals. Take virtually any dozen or more of such chemicals, put them into a compost heap, and you have yourself a super-toxic waste site that kills all of life. The industry does not get it because there is just too much money to be made.

    AUTISM, ADHD, and Cancer
Is it any wonder that autism rates in this country have skyrocketed or gone  from 1 in 2500 to 1 in 166 in just a few decades… or that ADHD syndroms in children are epidemic. Why is it that cancer is the number one disease killer of children in America?

    SOLUTIONS
What we really need is not federal funding to help put more drugs, chemicals and synthetics into our bodies (the current  healthcare reform proposals) but rather the opposite - a national funding of naturopathic practices, organics, regional detox centers and the subsidizing of FIR or far infrared sauna in literally every home in America.

We also need a paradigm shift away from the chemical, a synthetic understanding of nature introduced in the 17th century.

This is the message of our philosophy of raw-wisdom.

    ALKALIZING DETOX BATH

    1 Comment 27 December 2009

Here is still another prescription for a form of water therapy to help heal and re-enliven the entire body. You can add this protocol to the use of saunas, enemas, colonics, homeopathy, living foods, and so on – all of which involve a form of hydrotherapy. Here we explore a deeply alkalizing detox bath.

    PRESCRIPTION – PREPARATION
    Take the following
    1 cup of Epsom Salts
1 cup of sea, Celtic or Himalayan salt
    1 cup of baking soda.

Mix the ingredients together and keep them in a sealed mason jar. Ideally get yourself a relax FIR sauna and do a 15-30 minute session. All the while fill the bath with comfortably warm water and add 1/4 of the mixture. Relax in the bath for about half an hour.

IN BETWEEN – TREAT YOURSELF ROYALLY
Always treat yourself royally. While in the bath, consider sipping a green juice with a little lemon and some mint or your favorite organic herb tea. Read some poetry.

AFTERWARDS – BASK IN THE DETOX
Then rap yourself in a warm towel or comfortable robe for another 20 minutes. This will help draw out toxins from your system systemically and leave you feeling awesomely refreshed and renewed.

Our unique program was conceived and designed by Nathan Batalion ND.He helped conceive, fund and organize the Gerson Wellness Center at Sedona which treated  chronically ill patients with the Gerson natural therapy. Here he attempts to take the very best of major natural treatments such as those developed by Drs. Max Gerson, Bernard Jenson, Linas Pauling, John Tilden, William D. Keller, Dean Ornish, Caldwell B. Esselstyn,  T. Colin Campbell, Sasaki Kyuo, Robert O. Young, Joel Fuhrman, Morris Keller, and Gabriel Cousens. By combining all this healing knowledge and wisdom, we can arrive at the most powerful of natural therapies on the planet.

    Naturolism
This approach also follows our philosophy of Raw-wisdom or “naturolism” The name of this philosophy indicates the intent to support naturopathy. This philosophy was as originated by Nathan Batalion ND through live-long experiences described in his bio. This unique philosophy guides us to see how life and consciousness are at the core of nature (not the mechanical, math-based atomic model of Sir Issac Newton) and thus that life and consciousness also reside at the deepest core and foundation of all of ourselves – mind, body and spirit. Therefore we need to support and  bring out those living forces, and not just kill a disease or elicit mechanical/dead-ridden, machine-like patterns out being.

    Effectiveness
The combined documentation for the effectiveness of all these natural therapies upon which the 90-Day Rainbow Diet-Detox Cleanse is based is legion. Here we have listed just thirteen of the major prior pioneers:

    Dr. Max Gerson
Gerson, back in the 1930’s,  pioneered a degenerative disease protocol that used massive amounts of freshly squeezed vegetable and fruit juices along with coffee enemas.

    Dr. Bernard Jenson
Jenson provided a mass of information on the central imp
ortance of colon health and the use of colonic cleansers.

    Dr. Linas Pauling
Pauling discovered the important roles of Vitamin C in reversing disease and preserving life force.

    Dr. John Tilden
Tilden recognized that toxemia is at the root of all illnesses and that therefore we need to perpetually detoxify; that we need to intensely take synthetic chemicals out of, not into our bodies.

    Dr. William Keller
Keller championed the use of pancreatic enzymes alongside.

    Dr. Dean Ornish
Ornish trailed a the blaze for using a vegetarian/vegan diet along with meditation and other lifestyle changes.

    Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn
Esselstyn added research on eliminating processed oils to improve circulation

    Dr. T. Colin Campbell
Campbell conducted the groundbreaking China Study, a free summary of which we have published.

    Dr. Sasaki Kyuo
Kyuo gathered extensive research information on how far infrared rays were effectively used to reverse dozens of chronic ailments.

    Dr.  Robert Young
Young put together the startling findings on the importance of alkaline fluids in the body.

    Dr. Joel Fuhrman
Fuhrman researched  the most nutrient-dense foods.

    Dr Morris Keller
Keller devised a synthetic and alternative week approach to diet/detox procedures.

    Dr. Gabriel Cousens
Cousens perfected the careful use of raw vegan methods to help turnaround degenerative diseases.

The above list is not all-inclusive. There are still more pioneers. Combining all this tremendous wealth of information, research and experience, plus the guidance of a revolutionary philosophy of nature – Raw wisdom – provides the basis for our unique 90-Day Rainbow Diet/Detox Cleanse.

    90-DAY RAINBOW CLEANSE PREPARATION

    No Comments 24 December 2009

    ALTERNATE WEEKS
This program is designed to help reverse chronic systemic ailments by going deep to treat the cause. We want to bring back the vital, life-giving energies into the body and take out what has been sapping the same – toxins, acids, synthetic chemical traces, heavy-metals and lower life forms (bacteria, fungi, and viruses). We alternates a week of intensive nourishment with three meals a day and a series of juices with a week of detoxification . We continue following this program for a minimum of 90 days or until the disease signs and symptoms are no longer present.

    WHAT IS INCLUDED
With both weeks there is a high level of hydration therapy. Water brings life out of every seed. So we want to bring that kind of force out of our own body and using juices and other cleansing fluids for this task. The intensive nourishing week includes three meals a day plus thirteen juices. The intensive detox week includes the same number of juices when one includes cleaning drinks. During both  periods we use saunas, enemas (colonics if available) and mild exercise as well as periods of quiet meditation to reconnect the whole inner body-mind-spirit.

    11-13 JUICES DAILY
It should be noted that it is best to make your 11-13 daily juices fresh throughout the day and using a slow-oxidizing juicer. We recommend the Hurom Juicer. You can use the same for making citric juice or an inexpensive citric presser. A bit more time consuming and alternatively you can employ a good blender like Vitamix or Blendtec to blend foods and then strain out the liquid using a  nut milk bag.

    ORGANIC
Be sure to buy only organic produce to make the juices and meals. If not found locally, there are Internet delivery services.

    GREEN SUPPLEMENTS
We also add organic green powders to our drinks to give a broader spectrum of minerals and vitamins. These can be alternatively gotten in capsule form. We recommend having several different kinds to alternate and rotate the greens. Vita-Mineral Greens and Pure Synergy are among the best green supplements – organic and raw -  and can be gotten from our affiliate the Raw Food World along with most other supplements  listed elsewhere. You can also look for alternative brands at your local health food store and chose  those with the broadest spectrum of organic greens. Don’t compromise on the organics. Eat or take less if one is on a tight budget.

    DEALING WITH HUNGER
If you experience hunger during the intensive eating week, grab an extra fruit (or if on a Phase I diet a “vegetable fruit” like a tomato). Or you can be creative in between meal treats with your blender or dehydrator. With the detox week, drink some extra fresh citric juice and add stevia to sweeten it. This will all help with the cravings.

    TOO BUSY TO JUICE
If you know ahead of time you will be rushed or away from home, it may be necessary to make some juices for later consumption. If this happens, fill several mason jars full to the top so the juice can only minimally oxidize. Add a tablespoon of Vitamin C  or camu camu powder (naturally rich in vitamin C) or two tablespoons of lemon or lime to each jar to help keep them fresh.

    VARY THE GREENS
It is important to chose deep green vegetables and to vary them in making juices and salads. There are many to chose from like kale, collards, bok choy, dandelion leaves, lettuce, parsley, aloe vera,  mint, cabbage and so on.

    TO SWEETEN JUICES
Use a little carrot, tomato, sweet peppers, a small apple and/or some stevia – all in moderation. Creativity here is a plus.

    HEALING WATER
All the prepared juices during our 90 day healing program are diluted with water. Water is the greatest of healers and we should make sure we have a clean source or water that is filtered at the tap. Always begin the day with some form of hydration – drinking water, juices, taking a sauna and enema. Adding citric juice, green powder ingredients, baking soda, and alkalizer mixes available at health food stores will further alkalize the water.

    ENEMAS AND COLONICS
Throughout the 90 day rainbow cleanse it is essential to use some form of enema. We recommend, following the research of Dr. Max Gerson, a coffee enema as being the most potent and with a use at least first thing in the morning and at the end of each day.One can do more if one has the time and inclination and if the condition is severe. You can get 100% organic coffee from our affiliate source. If you click their enema equipment website tab you can order any necessary equipment and/or supplies. Alternatively we have available  a stainless steel bucket which is easier to keep clean. If you have the services of a colon therapist nearby, this can be an added plus. If you have an allergic reaction and can’t tolerate any caffeine, as happens in rare instances, then straight water is an option with some backing soda to alkalinize the water.  Another option is to add some green juices, especially wheatgrass to the enema water. It can further be squirting it the anus after an enema cleanse with a syringe). This follows the work of Ann Wigmore. First see if you can tolerate the coffee enema as this is the most powerful. It is worth the preparation time. Full instructions are given in this blog under the enema category.

The next blog will be on the diet preparation fo the 90 day rainbow cleanse.

90-DAY RAINBOW DIET CLEANSE – DIET

    3 Comments 24 December 2009

    detox_diet
THREE DIET PHASES – CONTROLLING GLYCEMIC (BLOOD SUGAR INTAKE)
There are three types or phases of diet that can be followed. If there is candida, fungus, virus or any other micro-organism infection, it is best to sugar-starve these micro-critters with what we call a Phase I diet. Otherwise we recommend a Phase 1.5 or intermediate diet. We have a chart available that outlines the food choices. This is based on the combined research work of Dr. Robert Young and Gabriel Cousens.

MODERATE “HEAVY” DIGESTING VEGAN FOODS – NUTS, SEEDS, AND BEANS
When eating seeds, nuts or beans, it is always a plus to first sprout or soak them overnight (with a drop of hydrogen peroxide to prevent molds) – and then eat them as fresh as can be. Most individuals with chronic ailments have a lack of sufficient digestive enzymes – so eating any large quantities of a heavy food is a no-no. They can be made less heavy via sprouting and blending, Keep sprouts refrigerated. Ultimately all nuts, seeds and beans trigger some degree of acidity, not as much as animal flesh products,  so again they should be taken in, in great moderation or small quantities – like a handful of nuts as treat.  Overall the ideal protein level in a diet is 5% or less of caloric intake and most vegetables provide that amply. We only eat bean protein products, like soy, on a quite rare occasion. Almonds and sunflower seeds, when soaked overnight are more alkaline – and the best way to take their protein in is via blending them and then straining the milk through a nut milk bag.

    THREE MEALS
We recommend keep breakfast light to extend the overnight fast. Make lunch the main meal when the digestive enzymes are the strongest. Thus dinner should also be on the light side.

    IN BETWEEN SOUPS, SNACKS, RAW-CHIPS
At any time of the day one can have a snack or some warming soup made by pouring hot water over your favorite ingredients rather than cooking the soup. Alternatively one can make a quick blend in the blender or chew on some chips made in the dehydrator.

    SEAWEED OR ALGAE
We recommend a daily intake of one or another kind of seaweed or sea algae- whether in soups, salad dressings, blends or as part of at least one meal a day. They provide needed trace minerals.

    NO OILS
Instead of oils one can add small amounts of avocado, flax, chia, and or coconuts to the diet – all of which provide healthy fats. Put flax seeds into a coffee grinder and you have a ground meal that can be added to a cereal, salad, soup and many other recipes. This follows the advise of the groundbreaking work of Dr. Esselstyne.

    SUPPLEMENTS
The daily schedule lists additional supplements that are taken with the juices.

    8:30: CITRIC JUICE # 4
This is the last citric juice for the day with 4 Pancreatin. Don’t miss this as the Pancreatin can then
work throughout the night to help internally digest the protein coating of cancer cells in the blood and
    in tumor

    9:00 SHOWER/BATHE & PREPARE FOR SLEEP
Here we advise a mild skin brushing. This can be wet using a very mildly abrasive nylon-fiber scouring pad (normally used for dishes) or a dry-skin brush after the shower. This helps stimulate the largest detox organ of the body and removes toxins and dead cells.

BENEFITS OF FIR DETOX SAUNA – Part III

    No Comments 09 December 2009

    bs01

Yes here are still more health benefits to a FIR Sauna for everyone’s home use.

    Weight Loss
You can burn up to 600 calories in a 30 minute session. The on-going improved metabolism also helps you lose weight. Then at 100 F or 38 C you melt fat to release toxins into the blood stream to be removed by sweat. With improved circulation you will be ready to exercise more and lose yet more weight.

    Deep Sleep and Relaxation
This is a huge benefit. Take a sauna before going to bed and it will help you soundly asleep. You will wake up more refreshed, less groggy. I find I need less sleep as well. This also can be used to reduce high blood pressure. We take our portable home sauna on long trips, to relieve the stress of our extended traveling.

    More Beautiful Skin
I can most strongly vouch for this since I had a scalp condition that refused to heal for nearly a decade (originally due to use of hair dyes  made with chemicals). Fasting wouldn’t do the trick, nor diet changes. It was not until I started my daily use of the Relax 100% Infrared Sauna, and for nearly four months, that this went away. Now, in retrospect, it seems miraculous. Actually it is just a combination of detoxification and improved circulation that yielded this result. The body heals itself when given a chance. It builds new skin cells every 28 days.

    Clears Mind and Senses
This is another major benefit. You will distinctly feel the greater clarity of mind after regular use of a FIR sauna.

    Improves Energy
Last, but not least, all of the above adds up to improve energy levels, especially when combined with superior nutritional programs and more regular exercise, plus the resulting deeper sleep.

Here are some more benefits of FIR or Far Infrared Saunas

    Supports Immune System
FIR saunas have been shown to increase white blood cell counts, boosting your immunity.

Increases Blood Circulation & Metabolic Rate
It helps bring more nutrients and oxygen to cells. This helps all kinds of health challenges. It assists tissue regeneration and hormonal ailments. Research has shown that  metabolic rates rise approximately 13% for every 1 C (.6F) rise in the sauna’s temperature.

    Relieves Aches and Pains
This is the bonus earned by improving immune function and increasing blood circulation.

    Speeds Tissue Healing
The whole process speeds healing, especially at the first tier or skin, lymph and blood levels.

This is why we love the healing effects of using a home portable model FIR Sauna. The model we use is called “Relax Sauna” and which reminds me to add the vital relaxation benefit.

BENEFITS OF FIR DETOX SAUNA – Part I

    No Comments 07 December 2009

    bs01

Far Infrared  or FIR saunas are really fun to have at home – especially the portable sauna or canvas type. It helps create a home spa and offers many basic health benefits.

    SUN’S HEALING RAYS
FIR rays emulate the sun’s rays, the majority of which have been proven to be infrared. The use of the home sauna simulates a sweating workout.

    PASSIVE SWEAT
It creates passive sweat that takes out, rather than produces, lactic and other acids. NASA found it highly beneficial to use FIR because this stimulated the astronauts’ circulation in lieu of  exercise which was not possible in a weightless atmosphere. I use a model called the Relax Sauna, especially on days in between my running workouts.

    BOOSTS DETOX
We know that FIR rays penetrate the skin more deeply and thus produce a deeper detox. The heat melts fats to remove toxins, helps heal tissues as it stimulates circulation, and all in all, slows the aging process.

STOPPING ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION – THE FIRST WAVE

    No Comments 25 November 2009

    stop environmental-pollution-detox-mind-body-spirit

WHERE SHALL WE BEGIN TO DETOX OUR WORLD?
Ever since Rachel Carson published her classic Silent Spring, the amount of environmental pollution in our air, water, soil and ultimately the cells of living organisms has continued to skyrocket. If trends continue, life on earth may not be sustainable. All of this has continued to occur despite the growth of a vibrant environmental movement which Carson initially triggered in the 1960’s.  Some logical questions then arise,  such as why past approaches have fallen short and why we have not come up with new strategies that do work to stem the tide of vast environmental pollution?

POINT TO OTHERS: PROBLEMS ARE OUT THERE
I have often seen environmentalist point fingers at certain  corporate or political “villains” who are supposedly responsible for the larger part of our environmental crises. In other words, they see the problem as out there and certainly outside of themselves. If only we could get the corrupt politicians and executives to change their ways we would all be much better off.  If only we could alter the messages of the major corporate media, our world would soon transform. If only we could change the ownership of the means of production, our society would more gloriously progress for the benefit of the disadvantaged.

POINT TO SELF: PROBLEMS DEEP INSIDE
Here we stop pointing fingers and look instead within. We take personal responsibility and in waves. This means we start detoxing from our innermost core within and then go outward to radiate in all directions towards ever larger circles of influence. This blog and our website raw-wisdom.com outlines the first such wave – changing our core vision and orientation to nature as a whole, to our cosmos.  As long as we all ourselves have not made this innermost shift, the outer world will continue its present non-sustainable course.

WHY DETOX – INTERNAL BODY CLEANSE

    7 Comments 12 November 2009

When we build up a good sweat we remove toxins from our skin or deeper. We’ve absorbed them because toxins are everywhere – in our soil, waterways, air, soil and bodies!

    CHEMICAL POLLUTION
We potentially can absorb up to 250,000 synthetic chemicals present into our environment . About 20,000 of these chemicals, according to the EPA, cannot be easily metabolized. This means they can get stuck inside our bodies without being broken down and excreted. As a result, the Center for Disease Control estimates that approximately 80% of Americans suffer from some form of environmentally-triggered illness and 1 in 4 have serious conditions of heavy metal poisoning. We can avoid chemical exposures at work, at home, and in our gardens -  by using water and air filters and buying non-toxic paints, cleansers etc. One of the prime sources of pollution, however, is our food supply!

Nearly 10,000 chemicals are employed in their processing and storage, about 3,000 in foods directly. Sorting through this, the greatest risk comes from super-toxins, like DDT, that remain in our fat deposits in a non-biodegradable way or with a long half-life. Approximately 1,000 of such chemicals pose serious carcinogenic health risks ( probably much more in combinations).

Every year the EPA culls human tissue samples and finds DDT in 100% of  those samples! It has been estimated that 95% of cancers are caused by environmental and dietary factors. As a result, we virtually all need to detox.

    IT’S IN ALL OF US
While I was born before the advent of global environmental pollution in the 1940’s. Nowadays, unlike then, we find toxic residues virtually everywhere, even in the mother’s placenta that surrounds human embryos to be born!  We find pollution also in the most remote regions of the planet, like Antarctica. Thus no one can escapes this global impact.

    REVERSING CHEMICAL POLLUTION
What we can do is reverse things.

Melinda and I regularly engage in juice and water fasts, colonics, liver and kidney cleanses, and you name it. We also take far infrared saunas to powerfully detox on a daily basis.  This produces  more sweating than with exercise. We have 3 million sweat glands in our bodies, so let’s use them! If we do these daily saunas  remember that living in such a polluted world, it may take  months and sometimes years to clear all the deep-seated chemical residues we have and to begin to drive one’s life more at full-speed.

WHY FAR INFRARED (FIR) RELAX SAUNAS ROCK!

    No Comments 10 November 2009

    far-infrared-fir-relax-sauna

Nathan Batalion, Global Health Activist, Healingtalks Editor

    NATURAL HEALING

(Healingtalks) Far infrared rays emulate the rays of the sun, about 80% of which are infrared. Far infrared are the most healing rays. This was discovered after a decade of testing in Japan

    DEEPER DETOX

The light and heat rays of an infrared sauna penetrate more deeply into our skin. As a result, we sweat more and also the detoxification effect is 5-10x more. It is the most powerful antidote I know of for a continuous protection in our polluted world. It especially helps remove heavy metal deposits, and instead of using expensive chelation therapies.

    WEIGHT LOSS

Infrared saunas are a means to lose weight as 400-600 calories are burnt up with a 30 minute far infrared sauna.

    CLEARS THE MIND

This is the part that I like the most, why I take a home sauna for 15 minutes or more every morning and evening in my relax infrared portable sauna.

    IMPROVES ENERGY

Some see this immediately, and for me it took three months of continuous use to experience a huge energy improvement. Gabriel Cousens would say that to go through life with a toxic body is like driving a car with the brakes on.

    BEAUTIFIES

Saunas can clear the pores of our skin and help remove excess fat deposits and blemishes. Within the first couple of weeks of using our sauna, we had boils break out and then clear up as part of the detoxification- ultimately yielding smoother and more radiant skin.

INCREASES CIRCULATION & SPEEDS WOUND HEALING

This is a big one. We have seen diabetic leg ulcers cleared up in seven weeks by using the same infrared technology – and largely because it dilates and re-conditions circulation. This is why NASA astronauts used infrared technologies in lieu of exercise  because otherwise their muscles would atrophy due to weightlessness in outer space.

    RELIEVES ACHES AND PAINS

This is because of the combination of toxin removal and enhanced circulation.

    PROMOTES SOUND SLEEP

This is why I also do a short sauna every night before going to bed, and in order to sleep like a baby.

    SIMULATES A WORK OUT

For those who are physically challenged, an infrared sauna simulates the sweating and increased circulation of a workout.  For athletes it helps remove lactic acid and speeds recuperation during exercise rest periods.

I find the sauna invaluable and awesome for my approach to heal via the best enhancements for our nutrition, detoxification, effective circulation, and inner work. The top ten benefits rock and everyone in our polluted world should have one.
