Comparing Messages: Jill Bolte Taylor, My Stroke of Insight

by Nathan Batalion, PhD, Naturopath, Triathlete

(Healingtalks) Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor’s My Stroke of Insight details this Harvard neuroanatomist’s experience of a severe, life-threatening stroke and her remarkable recovery. Her story struck such a powerful chord that the video of Jill Taylor explaining her stroke experience remains one of the 10 most viewed TED films of all time. What also makes her story unique is that it is the first documented account of a brain scientist undergoing such a stroke experience. The book is clearly written, mostly in a non-academic style, to appeal to the general public and it is over-brimming with depth of sincerity and passion. Furthermore, parts of her narrative are quite suspenseful, such as with how she managed, in just the nick of time, to get life-saving help.

Jill Taylor’s stroke insights

That thrilling account, however, does not start until about page 50. The reader is first left wading through a relatively less interesting account of brain anatomy and a simple outline of right and left hemispheric functions. After her narrative of the stroke experience, she then offer insights on leading a “brain balanced life.” For Taylor this means “stepping to the right” and to “bring my thoughts back to the present moment.” The larger issues of our times are less addressed, as she is focused on keeping her sanity in a world that “spins dangerously fast” While Taylor does use her traumatic stroke experience to find a lasting inner peace, she does not tread a step further to evolve insights about our world as seen through the altered state of a left brain meltdown

Contrasting my own “raw-wisdom” left brain meltdown insights

By contrast, my own writings dive into an altered way of perceiving the world and to evolve a different worldview than the prevalent math-based mechanical vision of nature. It is my view that we will not be saved from our globally threatened woes by resting in a non-verbal sense of inner oneness which abandons the left brain to do whatever it will. Nor do I believe modern scientific view will come to the rescue, as it often abandons the insights of the right hemisphere in favor of the data of its measurements. What my philosophy of raw-wisdom thus calls for is a right-left brain transcendent view.
