(Healingtalks) Genetically modified food labeling law are intended to help the public know what is in their foods, especially when countless studies have shown harmful effects from eating GMO foods.

New York GMO labeling laws

New York is  among them. That state is edging ever closer to passage of a state-wide GMO labeling law to mandate “the labeling of food or food products that contain a genetically modified material or that are produced with such ingredients.” Assemby bill A 3525 and its Senate companion, S 3835, were introduced in July 2013 and then again January 2014. The bill is up for another vote in 2015.

GMO labeling laws opposed by Big Food

In 2014, Vermont became the first state in its country to pass such a law. Such initiatives have been started in 37 states, but are facing staunch opposition from powerful food industry giants. These are the same giants that have created big tummy or the obesity epidemic. These companies often could care less about the public’s health and would rather you do not know what is in their their products and because you might become informed and buy in.

So, rather than switching to wholesome, organic non-GMO ingredients and to deliver healthier products, these Big Food conglomerates insist on maintaining secrecy.  Please consider boycotting these companies and all their products, which often are sold under different labels.

Vermont anticipated this backlash, a strong opposition from Big Food promoting a Big Con, and thus started a legal defense fund before the passage of their GMO labeling law.

Multiple reasons for serious concern

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are scientifically engineered to promote unnaturally selective gene traits or to downplay others which are commercially undesirable . In most cases, GMOs are designed to produce insecticides or to be resistant to pesticides such as Round Up Ready seeds. The majority of consumers are worried about the health effects of GMOs, and rightly so, because many studies have shown harms, both health and environmental dangers.

Countries with GMO fool labeling laws

60 Nations Have Mandatory GMO Labeling

Global tidal wave for labeling

At present, 60 countries worldwide now have GMO labeling laws in place, America has yet to get with the program. Although the mainstream media, along with their food industry advertisers, would have you believe otherwise, Consumer Reports Polling shows that 92% of Americans want mandatory GMO labeling.

If you are a NY resident that wishes to see GMOs labeled, you can sign the petition here: http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/make-gmo-food-labeling In the case of Vermont, only 3% of the population were required to sign a petition for the state to pass the law.
