GMO baby food
making
children sick
Julian Georgiou, Healingtalks Contributing Writer
(Healingtalks) Mass-commercalized GMO baby foods are a reminder that consumers need to be most diligently aware when shopping. The one company most behind this thrust has already been pouring vastly misleading information out to the public – even with false claims to have an organic status with great health benefits! These products will actually produce sick babies and sick children – and ultimately sick adults to feed the future patient rosters of Big Pharma.
Who is polluting our baby foods?
The company behind this most deceptive and malevolent practice is Martek. They produce Martek’s Life’sDHA and Life’sARA. They even have the nerve to claim these are organic ingredients and the fact is that their lab-creations can now be found in hundreds of commercial products, including baby foods. See the list of products below.
Consumers, especially mothers, thus need to become super-aware of what is out there. Pass it on.
Genetically modified DHA
So let’s start with DHA. It’s an omega-3 fatty acid normally and naturally found in breast milk. It is a major component of the brain and eyes of every human being, representing about 97% of all omega-3 fats found in the brain and 93% of all omega-3 fats located in the retina (Life’s DHA).
However, and like all genetically altered foods with GMOs, the Martek products are really incompatible with our nature and ourl bodies. They are especially harmful when consumed by babies.
Another example of the GMO industry’s history of vast deceptions
As far back as 2002, food manufacturers began supplementing infant formula and baby food with synthetic forms of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA). They claimed this helped with brain development despite the fact that their forms of DHA/ARA, as used in infant formulas, are really incompatible and substantially different than the form found in human milk.
Synthetic DHA/ARA is from laboratory-grown fermented algae and fungus. It is produced through the use of hexane, a petroleum by-product and EPA-identified neurotoxin.
Martek still deceptively claims organic status for its products. While the FDA has announced it will investigate such claims about DHA/ARA infant formulas, and that they do not really support brain and eye development, that most corrupt of US agencies, has failed to act.
Negative health effects of GMO altered DHA/ARA
From 2002 onwards, parents and medical professionals have observe a range health problems after ingesting these products. They include difficulties in breathing as well as gastrointestinal disorders. When affected babies are no longer fed the formula, the ailments disappear.
Additional alternative options
You can also protect your baby by
- Make your own baby food from fresh, organic and whole ingredients as pictured above
- Alternatively buy only organic baby food , making doubly sure that (even if labelled organic) they do not contain any DHA or ARA ingredients that are added artificially.
- Long-term breastfeeding – this is the best initial option, and to insure your baby gets the best nutrients that nature intended (Lance, 2011).

- Enfamil Next Step (Mead Johnson)
- Isomil 2 Advance (Abbott Laboratories)
- Nestle Good Start Supreme with DHA & ARA (Nestle USA)
- Parent’s Choice Organic (Wal-Mart)

Future testing for GMO ingredients in baby food (beginning in Europe where GMO labels are required)
In Europe there is a Eureka Project that’s developing screening methods for testing the presence of GMO ingredients in baby foods. Initially their testing kit will look for two common ingredients in baby foods, glycine max proteins and maize starch.
Consumer action is needed in US
It is important, in the US, to ask the American National Organic Standards Board to revoke the use of their DHA and AHA ingredients in organically-labeled products (Keegan, 2011) . We should also boycott the products that have their ingredients.
