Landfill Harmonic-The Recycled Orchestra

The Recycled Orchestra

(HealingTalks) For most of us, recycling means separating our bottles and cans from our paper. To the children on Cateura, Paraguay recycling means music. Cateura is built, physically and economically, on top of a landfill. Citizens spend days scrounging through the trash for items they can sell, and in such an impoverished environment children fall prey to drugs and gangs.

All of that changed when an orchestra director and a music teacher came to town. Luis Szaran and Fabio Chavez introduced a music program that soon filled to capacity. There was still a wide interest, but no more instruments. The solution: make the musical instruments out of the garbage.

And so, the Recycled Orchestra was born. In the words of co-founder Fabio Chavez: “The world sends us garbage. We send back music.” The project was chronicled in the documentary Landfill Harmonic, which is set to release in 2014.
