New Study-Soda and Artificial Sweeteners Linked to Depression
(HealingTalks) A brand new study has tentatively found that soda drinkers are more likely to suffer from depression. It’s pretty clear that soda isn’t a healthy choice ever, but diet soda is even more unhealthy when it comes to mental hygiene. Artificially sweetened drinks up the the chances for depression even more than regular soda.
The Study
Technically, a direct link has not yet been released, but the study looked at more than a quarter million adults ages 50 to 71. In 1995 and 1996, they were asked what their habits were in terms of beverage consumption. When asked 10 years later whether or not they had been diagnosed with clinical depression, those who drank more than 4 cans of regular soda every day were 30% more likely to have been diagnosed. Diet soda drinkers were 32% more likely.
The study was conducted by the American Academy of Neurology, which will present the results in their entirety in March. Stay tuned, but in the meantime, take a break from soda!
What are alternatives to soda?
It’s 2 o’clock in the afternoon and you need some sort of pick me up. If you are concerned for your mental health, don’t grab a soda! Coffee drinkers can rejoice as your risk for depression is 10% lower than the non-coffee drinking population, but beware of artificial sweeteners. Products like Sweet ‘N’ Low, Equal, and Splenda contain aspartame, the same poison in diet sodas. Aspartame not only has negative effects on your mood, but has been known to cause cancer. If you’re trying to lower your intake of sugar, why not try Truvia? Truvia is made from the stevia plant, a natural sweetener from the sunflower family.
If you don’t drink coffee, head for the fruit. Like soda, fruit is high in sugar, but it’s sugar our body can put to good use. Bring some unsweetened juice with you to work for a quick energy boost when you need it.
