Watermelon lowers the risk of heart disease
(Healingtalks) Research show that drinking watermelon juice lowers plague, unclogs arteries, and helps with many other ailments. This should be seen in the light of the fact that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US. In turn, atherosclerosis or the hardening of the arteries induces heart attacks. Research on watermelon juice
Researchers from the University of Kentucky tested mice on a high cholesterol diet. Where given watermelon juice as a supplement and over a 8 week period, their body fat (especially in the abdomen) was lowered significantly. Surprisingly, this had no effect on the muscle mass of the mice. Plasma cholesterol concentrations and atherogenic plaque lesions were also reduced. There was a moderate reduction in intermediate and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentrations. In short, the mice who had the watermelon juice ended up having much less risk of progressive arterial hardening and heart attacks.
Dr. Sibu Saha, the lead investigator in the study said, “Melons have many health benefits… this pilot study has found three interesting health benefits in mouse model of atherosclerosis. Our ultimate goal is to identify bioactive compounds that would improve human health”.
