UN URGES SWIFT MOVE TO VEGAN DIETS

Un-report-move-to-vegan-diets

A recent UN report outlines how a move towards global vegan diets because our present meat and dairy diets are non-sustainable. Making this vegan-diet shift will help stave off hunger, poverty, and the worst of environmental impacts that lead to global warming. In 2050 as the world population grows to 9 billion, our western diets must become greatly restrained according to the UN’s Environmental Program panel ( UNEP).  The report states ” animal products cause more damage than construction minerals such as sand or cement, plastics or metals. Biomass and crops for animals are as damaging as fossil fuels.”

CURRENT SHIFT TOWARDS MEAT AND DAIRY DIETS
The environmental scientist who co-chaired the panel, Ernst von Weizsaecker, stated that “rising affluence is triggering a shift in diets towards meat and dairy products. Livestock now consumes much of the world’s crops and by inference a great deal of freshwater, fertilizers and pesticides.”

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
The study further noted that agriculture, particularly the production of meat and dairy products, accounted for 70% of the use of global freshwater use, 38% of the total land utilization, and 19% of the world’s greenhouse emissions that create global warming.  Also by the year 2050, the world’s food production would have to increase 70% to keep up with the population growth.

NON-SUSTAINABLE
Thus the environmental impact of maintaining our present meat and dairy-based western diets was shown by the UN report to be non-sustainable.
